Monday Success Tip
While looking for a job, most people will go on some job boards, find a position they like or think they want, and then apply, hoping it will lead to an interview and getting the job. While that is the natural progression, there are some steps that are left out of this equation.
If you want to get a job, then you must know what the needs are of the organization you want to work for and then see how you will meet them. You can have the greatest skills and knowledge in the world but if you can't show how they will benefit the organization, and add value, it really doesn't matter.
Just as a business owner must know the needs of their ideal customers, so must a job candidate know the needs of the company they would like to work for. As the economy keeps on the upswing, organizations are looking to expand their services and to hire more employees. However, they are slow to do so as they are looking for the "right" candidate. What that is can be a guessing game but, with some due-diligence and focused time, you can uncover the needs and show you will fill them.
I often find clients miss this important step; here are a few ways to start you on your need-finding mission :
- Company Website - this is the first place to look as you can find information about how the company started, what their mission and vision are, key people, their accomplishments, and other types of important data. Write down the key words and match them to your values and accomplishments.
- Google - enter the company's name and see what comes up. Go to those sites to read more about them and see how they have, or haven't, been meeting the needs of their industry and how they have been doing that. Again, match your skills against those to see how you stack up.
- Social Media Sites - such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Glassdoor.com, Hoovers, offer company info; other sites, such the Better Business Bureau or your local Chamber of Commerce, will also enable you to find out the status of a company.
- Work-of-Mouth - talking to people is the best way to ask questions about a company, their culture, their practices, and how they treat their employees. This can also help you to network and let others know more about you and what you have to offer. While you are not asking for a job, it could lead to a connection that could lead to one.
Once you have the information, write down all of the keywords you find - these are the needs. Next, write down your skills, knowledge, experiences and passions - these are the "how" you can meet those needs of. Now, you can convey these into your resume, your interview answers, and in your networking activities. You will be ready at all times for opportunities that may arise. I'd love to help you on your journey so why not call today to see how!
I hope you have a productive week - make it a successful one!
