Here we are again - ready to leave one month and begin another - how ready are you to move forward? Are you motivated enough? How much is enough for you?

This question will vary among every individual. Motivation is an urge, a need, a desire, a want. But these may come and go and are dependent on the desire and outcome of what we want. Likewise, if the desire comes from someone else, and is not ours, the impetus to achieve it will not be as strong - unless we see the ultimate outcome. This also applies in our organizations (or businesses), where goals are worked on daily.

Knowing your motivational need is crucial to you achieving those goals. As part of motivation, there is the saliency - or importance - of our need(s) and it is in making this connection where the work gets done. We can speak to having intrinsic motivational needs - those that come from within - and extrinsic motivational needs, which are external desires. When you stay late to finish a report you are intrinsic; if you stay late just for the money you value extrinsic motivators.

Knowing your salient need state  will help you align with the work you do and feel energized while engaged in those job tasks. You will begin work in your own time, take responsibility for your work and you can also have discussion with your leader on how your needs can get met and can seek them out. Ask yourself daily:
  • what goals/tasks do I need to accomplish this day?
  • what goal/task can I work on first that I can get done and feel more accomplished?
  • how important is this goal/task to my organization?
  • how important is this goal/task to me? what is the benefit I will get from doing this?
Knowing your motivators will go along way to not just task completion but to both organizational and personal success. You will ultimately feel more job satisfaction and connection to your work. Isn't that a great way to begin a new month? As the saying goes: April showers bring May flowers - begin now to 'grow' your own!

I am very excited to announce that the book I am a co-author in has been released.  It is called, Contagious Optimism, and it is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or on the site www.lifecarrots.com.  It was a thrill for me to finally see the book in print, as it has been 3 years since I submitted my first article (I have 3 in the book); I went to Delray Beach for the book signing and met fellow coauthors and sign books.  Wow - what an experience! If you want to feel inspired and uplifted, then I encourage you to check out the book.
