I just returned from a great week at the International Convention of the Association for Talent Development's (ATD), which was held here in Orlando. My talk went really well so I was happy and made some great contacts from all over the world. There were some great keynote speakers brought in, such as Sugata Mitra, who was the inspiration for the movie "Slum Dog Millionnaire" and Eric Wahl, who is an artist (you may have seen his work as he paints upside down). The main message of the conference and their talks was moving outside the 'box' and not doing things the conventional way, as well as for raising a happier workforce.

During the conference, I was coaching in the Career Center and saw numerous attendees who wanted to focus on moving out of their current job to something that would bring them more satisfaction; for some, it was moving out of their current role and into a higher opportunity, while others were looking to move into their own consulting business. As I'm a believer in finding those opportunities where you are now, we worked on them taking more control of their career as well as strategizing their "Plan B."

In looking at their level of unhappiness, my question to them was 'what is keeping you in your current career?'   Their answers varied, from worry about their security to waiting for that opportunity to present itself; some attendees really like where they work (but not their job tasks) while others said they liked their coworkers or what their organization stands for but detest the work they do. Do either of these sound familiar!

I firmly believe that you need to keep asking that question daily: "What keeps me in my career?" This places the focus on why you are in the career path you're on - this keeps your passions, involvement, and skills for that job in your responsibility. Knowing this information allows you to ensure that you are using them to the highest level which then increases your confidence and empowerment level, all of which leads to high performance and a host of opportunities ahead of you.

I think we go on auto-pilot in the work we do over time; for some it feels 'easy' while others may struggle as skill-sets drop off. Every day, reconnect with your job tasks:
  • what are the skills I need to do my work?
  • which skills come naturally and which do I struggle with that need developed?
  • how does my work fit into the organization as well as my customer?
Answering these will reconnect you to the work you do which will lead to finding the best ways to get the work done. Not only will you feel more empowered you will also be working at your highest level.

I am very excited to announce that the book I am a co-author in has been released.  It is called, Contagious Optimism, and it is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or on the site www.lifecarrots.com.  It was a thrill for me to finally see the book in print, as it has been 3 years since I submitted my first article (I have 3 in the book); I went to Delray Beach for the book signing and met fellow coauthors and sign books.  Wow - what an experience! If you want to feel inspired and uplifted, then I encourage you to check out the book.
