I have to say that I'm really sick of the rain as it's really putting a damper on outdoor activities, and we're to get more of it daily this week (:. My birthday this past week was a lot of fun; I went and visited Kennedy Space Center and got to see plans and progress on the new super shuttle they're building, while also revisiting with our history and relationship with space. If you haven't visited it, I would highly encourage you if you get to the Orlando area - history in the making.

In thinking about the best ways to get ahead in one's career, a theme came to mind this week  which is helping others. I think this is one of the best ways to get noticed and get ahead within an organization. These days, with everything being 'how you make me feel,' helping your fellow compadres out will not only benefit them and your organization - it will be a benefit  to you.

Follow me here: you regularly get frustrated as you see your coworker, Jim, struggling to get his work tasks done. This, in turn, slows your work down as well, not to mention feeling stressed when the work doesn't get done on time. Some of your coworkers are starting to notice Jim's struggles as well which is creating some tension in the office. Not the makings of a happy workday.

But, let's go the next step with you helping Jim out - this does not suggest that you will take over his work but that you would have conversation with him to see how he's doing and how you can help him. Maybe Jim does not get what the goal is to be accomplished, he might need help with his organizational skills, or maybe Jim has some personal problems going on at home that are distracting him. Talking to Jim informally can be the start to turning his - and your - situation around and getting the work done in a more effortless and timely manner.

Helping Jim (and other coworkers) is what's best for the team. It also makes the boss look good. This is what will get you noticed for more challenging assignments, a new position, or leadership roles. You also could become a mentor to new employees or move into a trainer role. Helping others shows your competence and conveys your competence for the job. I think it also presents you as one who is not afraid to put others first which is something a lot of people don't do; doing good for others is also good karma.

So, if you have a Jim (or Jane) in our workplace, look at ways you can be of help. If nothing else, it makes you a better person all around and improves your outlook greatly. Isn't that a smart way to love your job and advance your career?
