"Three
rules of work: Out of clutter find simplicity;
From discord find harmony;
In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."
~Albert Einstein~
Last week I wrote about my experience during
a commercial shoot with our city's Science Centre...
As promised, I will continue with part b of this shoot
and show you some more lighting scenarios.
I needed a fast and easy lighting system that was portable, since
I had little time, and many display to photograph.
Below is the layout showing the lighting I used over and over.
Two SB 800's on manual, with diffusers, no stands...one on the left,
another to the right.
In the middle was an Alien Bee with a shoot through umbrella. This
created some fill, but mostly it triggered the two SB 800's.
Having a large, spread out light to trigger the Nikon was valuable, since
in the past, without this, it was challenging trying to get them all
to "read" the light in order to fire......
Next two images, same lighting as above.....
Again, I've turned this lighting into my bread and butter fully functional,
get the job done, get it done fast, lighting strategy. A flat, boring display
has some nice sculpting, cross lighting and shadowing.....

On this display below, I climbed on top of the wall, and perched myself way up in order to shoot down.
I'm never afraid to climb just about anywhere to get the shot.
You can see, way back there, the Alien Bee, this time no shoot through but a 7"
reflector, shooting back at the camera. On the left and right, on the floor,
is an SB 800 on either side. It is lighting the display and the two kids sitting in
the display. I could easily clone those out later....
Same idea, this time I am on a huge tall ladder, shooting down into
a small theatre. You can see the effect from the shoot through and Alien Bee off
to the right, and the four SB800's, two of which are on the floor....
and the other two held by Travis, my trusted assistant and VALS (voice activated light stand)
At another display with translucent plexiglass, I placed Travis behind the display...
In order to get light coming back at me. I added a blue gel to the light he was holding.....
Same idea, different displays...Travis spreading out the lights......
And finally, one more. You can see the SB800 being used as a backlight for extra kick....
The results........(from the other side. I shot this display from both sides, same
lighting.....)....
