I hope you are enjoying the wonderful sunshine we have been having lately. I love this time of year where there is new growth everywhere. I feel inspired to start new projects and learn new things.
Helping Kids with EFT
Children have problems just like we do. Whether it is problems at school such as having trouble concentrating or focusing, arguments with other kids or having trouble making friends. Sometimes they feel like they are not as good as the other kids, or they don't perform well in tests. Often these problems cause them stress and anxiety and can disrupt their sleep. Well the good news is that EFT can help. Before using EFT with your children first address any resistance or worries you have. If you are calm they will take on board this new technique much better.
So try the following setups to ensure you are ready to teach them first.
- Even though I feel embarrassed introducing EFT to {child's name}, I accept how I feel
- Even though I'm scared {child's name} will laugh at me, I deeply and completely accept myself
- Even though I'm not sure how to introduce EFT to {child's name}, I accept myself anyway
- Even though I don't know what words to use to explain EFT, I'm open to finding the right words to use
- Even though {child's name} won't want to learn EFT, what if I was pleasantly surprised by their interest
Ok, you get the idea. Just tap on any of your worries, concerns or any objections you think your child will have. When you feel calm and ready to teach EFT there are a number of tools that can help you.
Tappy Bear is a wonderful tapping companion. He is a plush brown bear with black buttons that represent the tapping points. Children love to find his magic buttons. He is cuddly, cute and children really relate to him. You can use Tappy by asking your child to help him - suggest he has their problem & they can help him. Or he can be used to cuddle and tap as they work on their issue. Many children will then use Tappy by themselves any time they are upset, had a bad day at school or can't sleep. Tappy is an American product and there are alternatives available in the UK. These are from:
Alternatively - why not transform one of your child's existing bears or stuffed toys? Buy some buttons together, sew them on and hey presto you have your own unique tapping companion & had some fun creative time in the process.
Tapping Charts: There are also kids tapping charts that you can use instead. A good one I found is from: http://tappingforkids.wordpress.com/ This has lots of good information about working with kids as do both the Tappy Bear and Magical Bear websites.
When teaching EFT to children, keep it simple and make it fun. Tell them it is like a fun game they can play that will help them feel better. If your child is able to, have them tap on themselves as they copy you, tapping on yourself. Help them with their statements by asking them how they feel, or make suggestions if they can't express themselves. Tap them gently if they can't do it themselves.
Here's a sample tapping script to use with children. We typically use a different ending to the setup statement e.g. "I'm a great kid" instead of "I deeply and completely accept myself". There are a few examples below. Feel free to use one that works for your child.
Setup:
Tap on the Karate Chop whilst repeating three times:
- Even though I don't want to go to bed, I'm a great kid
- Even though I can't sleep when I go to bed, I'm still a good girl/boy
- Even though I wish I could just fall asleep easily, I'm safe and Mummy & Daddy love me
Eyebrow: I don't want to go to bed
Side of Eye: I feel tired but I just lie there
Under Eye: I wish I could fall asleep easily
Under Nose: I hate going to bed
Under Chin: I hate trying to sleep
Collarbone: I can't fall asleep
Under Arm: I don't want to go to bed & just lie there
Top of Head: I wish I could fall asleep
Eyebrow: I'm so tired
Side of Eye: My mind is too busy to sleep
Under Eye: I can't sleep when I go to bed
Under Nose: I want to go to sleep
Under Chin: I don't want to lay awake
Collarbone: I hate not sleeping
Under Arm: I hate feeling tired
Top of Head: I wish I could go to sleep easily
Eyebrow: I'm a great kid
Side of Eye: Mummy & Daddy love me
Under Eye: I'm a good girl/boy
Under Nose: I'm a great kid
Under Chin: My family loves me
Collarbone: I'm an amazing kid
Under Arm: What if I could go to sleep easily
Top of Head: I can go to sleep
Remember to use language appropriate to them. Tap on them and use your words if they can't do it themselves - just tune in how they are feeling.
Using EFT before bed is a great way to make it part of their daily routine. You can tap on anything that didn't go to plan, something that upset them, things they did or wish they didn't do etc. When you have tapped on the negative stuff you can then tap in the good stuff. Tap on things that did go well or any happy or positive experiences they had during the day. Making it part of their routine will really help them get the most out of tapping. It will also encourage them to use EFT themselves.
Energy Exercise of the Month
Expelling The Venom
This is another quick one - 1 to 2 minutes.
Benefits:
- Reduce stress
- Let go of built up "steam"
- Release anger or resentment
This exercise is done whilst you are stood up. Stand upright with your feet comfortably apart. Place your hands on your thighs with your fingers spread out. Take a deep breath in as you swing your arms out to your sides and then complete the circle by raising them high above your head. Turn your hands so that your palms face you and clench your fists.
As you exhale, make a loud "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound, whilst bringing your fists down fast. Open your hands as they reach your thighs. Bring to mind the cause of your stress, anger or resentment and repeat the exercise three times. Use deliberate thought as you pull your arms down. Repeat until you feel your anger or resentment dissipate or you feel you have let off enough steam!
