EDITOR'S PIECE OF MIND
===================================================
SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY . . . OR NOT
Since my kids are on their own, my summers don't involve
an influx of minion dominating my days, altering my schedule.
Writing ought to be easier for me, right? Wrong.
This time of year I have a huge garden going strong.
Weeding, picking, cooking, freezing and canning.
I'm also a huge plant person, so I'm in the yard, a lot.
This is also the FundsforWriters contest season. I spend
time planning, advertising, announcing and running this
essay competition that has become quite popular.
And good weather means lots more exercise. I can't stand
sitting inside as the sun shines and the green beckons.
Frankly, I don't care who you are, summer gives you excuses
not to write. Some magazines don't even accept submissions
in the summer. Contests slow down. Grants slow down. Agents
take vacations.
But summer is when you have to make yourself write. Yes,
I know how hard it is. It's like being so tired that you
want to curl up and nap, but you know you have to stay
up and meet an assignment. It's like dragging yourself
to the task.
But summer is opportunity.
Now is when Christmas pieces are written and submitted.
Christmas! One of the biggest seasons of the year. Now
is when most writers slow down . . . when you can submit
and beat the competition that isn't on its game.
Summer means new experiences. Vacations should spark
writing, entice you to journal, read new regional magazines,
take pictures and collect information for new writing
possibilities. Sports are alive and well giving you great
stories from the players to the history of the game to
the experience with your family, or recalling the game
you won for the team in your younger days.
Don't tell me it's harder to write in the summer. Summer
is opening its arms to you, saying take me, I'm yours.

Gumshoe Review is now open to accept short original fiction.
What were looking for in stories is a complete mystery in
1,000 words or less. We don't want character studies or mood
pieces. We'd like it to lean towards noir but being a mystery
-- telling a story is actually more important. The short
stories should be no longer than 1,000 words. Pay will be 5
cents per word to a maximum of $50 (so if the story is longer
you still only get $50).
