Why DVD Isn't Dead Yet! Sent Thursday, March 24, 2011 View as plaintext
Hi everyone,

So a couple weeks ago I sent a newsletter out titled You Really Want DVD Distribution For Your Film? and I got a record number of responses from people who were commenting on the fact that despite small revenue possibilities for retail DVD distribution these days (in most cases), they still felt that the exposure that retail distribution can bring you is worth it in itself.

And I don't mean a few of those comments came in, I mean dozens of them... all saying the same thing! So what's interesting is that as much as the pundits say things like DVD Is Dead and Digital is the way forward, the fact remains that Producers still really care about DVD! Big time!

Listen, I don't disagree with all this I was just curious on everyone's opinion, and after the responses I got it's pretty clear that even though retail distribution isn't necessarily a profitable revenue stream for most films, the exposure it gives you can be leveraged for future films.

This all sort of goes hand-in-hand with my blog post from over the weekend on Strategic Producing. You've got to always be thinking strategically about your projects - which cast will give you the most bang for your buck, which festivals and markets make sense to launch at, which distribution platforms will give you the most leverage, and so on. By the way, if you haven't yet read that blog post, click on it and check it out - there's a lot of really good comments on there and I'd love to hear your two cents too!

*** NEW FOR FILM SPECIFIC MEMBERS THIS WEEK ***

Speaking of whether DVD is dead or not, this month's Expert Interview Series is with filmmaker-tunred-distributor Jonathan Morken of Apprehensive Films who thinks that every revenue stream no matter how small really adds up in the end. Jonathan's company exploits retail distribution to it's fullest, while also pursuing direct sales from the web (and even a little digital VOD). If you've ever thought of starting your own distribution label, you won't want to miss this. And if you are looking for a solution to getting your films in retail without spending a fortune on traditional distributors' expenses, you gotta check this out now!

*** DISTRIBUTION IN REVERSE IS IN PROGRESS....***

We filled all the spots for the Distribution In Reverse program but 2 spots have opened up since Tuesday. I had a bunch of people email in and ask if the program is full, so here's the deal - you can listen to the replay for Session 1 and join us today as Session 2 begins (we'll be talking about Casting, Pitch Packets, Backing Into A Budget, Buzz-Building During Pre-Pro, and more!). To register for the 5-session program,  and get a free 6 month membership to Film Specific (value $159) just CLICK HERE.

Alright everyone, that's it for today. I hope you have a wonderful day and please keep the comments coming! I'd love to know what you think of these topics at hand....

To your success,
Stacey
