How to Start Making Money Online No Matter What Type of Biz You Want to Start (An In-Depth Tutorial for Newbies)

You'll come away knowing exactly what do to start your online, money-making journey. How to Start Making Money Online: The Definitive Tutorial I receive a lot of questions from many who want to get into internet marketing, but they don't know how or where to start because there's so much information online. I'm going to answer this question once and for all so that it can serve as a kind of template for newbies who are wondering where to start. A recent question from a reader of my freelance writing website (InkwellEditorial.com) prompted this tutorial, writing: I can't tell you how happy I am I found your site. You are doing exactly what I want to do and you make it simple to understand. Because of circumstances I work 60-70 hours a week at a job I hate. What would be the best something small I can start with so I can cut back on my overtime and work my way out of my job. You offer so much wonderful information I don't know where to start. By the way, the booklet I purchased on e-books was wonderful. Thank You, L- So, even though her question came by way of my freelance writing website, it applies to any type of online business you want to start because the initial steps are the same. FYI, in answer to her specific question, "What would be the best something small I can start with so I can cut back on my overtime and work my way out of my job?" I'd say affiliate marketing, using these tips. 5 Simple Steps to Get You On Your Way to Making Money Online as an Affiliate Marketer FYI, this is the only post you'll ever have to read about how to get started making money online doing "x." Every successful internet entrepreneur will echo that the following five steps are exactly what you need to do to get started - no matter what type of online business you want to start. So, here goes . . . I. MAKE A DECISION Many who want to get out of a job and into internet marketing (or freelance writing, or self-publishing, etc.) get stuck at the starting gate. They talk themselves out of getting started by putting roadblocks in the way. I discussed this in the post, How Much Does It Cost to Start an Internet Marketing Business in 2012, which was written at the beginning of the year, writing: One of the main things stopping most from achieving their dreams is the I don't know how to____________ (you fill in the blank); or I need to ____________ (again, you fill in the blank). Don't wait for the timing to be perfect . . . for, it never will be. Don't wait until you learn how to do x . . . for, you'll probably procrastinate forever and never get started. Don't wait until you have enough money for x . . . for, the reality is you'll probably never get around to saving it. If I'd waited for any of these things, the reality is, I probably wouldn't have achieved half of what I've achieved over the last few years. The bottom line is . . . you must [decide to] GET STARTED . . . II. STOP "OPPORTUNITY SHOPPING" A pro -- and con -- of making money online is that there are a gazillion ways to do it. I know this firsthand, as I make money online in three ways, ie: as an affiliate marketer; writing and self-publishing my own line of ebooks; and as a freelance (SEO) writer for small and mid-size businesses. Many who want to make money online do what I call "affiliate program hopping" (aka opportunity shopping). I've discussed this before. In the post, Affiliate Internet Marketing for Beginners: Are You Making This Mistake and Costing Yourself Sales?, I wrote: What is Affiliate Program Hopping? It's when you flit from product to product and program to program trying to find something that works. This can cost you success as an affiliate marketer more than anything else. One of the reasons it's so hard to answer questions like "how do I start making money online," is that the answer is unique to every person. So how do you choose? How do you stop "opportunity shopping?" Well it's really simple; narrow your choices by asking yourself a series of questions. Questions to Ask Yourself to Help You Choose an Appropriate Online Business and/or Affiliate Marketing Opportunity (i) What are your interests? This is important because if you don't like an opportunity or have an interest in it (over and beyond making money), you won't stick with it. And, sticking with it is 95% of the battle when it comes to making money online. (ii) How many hours per day / week do you have to devote to it? If you work a full- or part-time job, it can be hard to devote consistent hours to your online business. And, there's a lot to learn when you first start, eg, how to set up a blog/website, learning SEO, writing content, learning how to drive traffic to your site/blog, etc. It's consistency of action that will make you successful in whatever you choose, and if you're not realistic about how many hours per day/week you can devote to your online business, you're practically doomed before you start. Again, this is something I've discussed before in this newsletter. In the issue entitled, Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: How Many Products/Services Should You be Promoting at One Time?, I wrote: Time Tip: Don't kid yourself on time. If you work a FT job and say that you're going to come home and put in 4 hours every night, but you have two kids and a spouse who works also, that just may not be feasible. Set realistic time goals that you can consistently adhere to, for it's only in consistency that you will find success in affiliate marketing. (iii) How much money do you want/need to make in the next 3 to 6 months? Set realistic goals. Many choose programs because some guru touts that you can earn "thousands per week" by just doing X. And, while you can earn a lot with many online businesses, what most "gurus" fail to tell you is that it took them some time to build up to that point. For example, I consistently earn in the mid-four figures per month selling ebooks online. BUT, I've been writing and selling ebooks online since 2004. As of this writing [2012], that's eight years! I didn't start earning four figures until around 2008 or so. It took me a few more years to build to the point where it was consistent. Hence, my advice here is to start with realistic income expectations, eg, I want to earn $1,000/month in the next 30 to 90 days. Then, choose a program / an opportunity - and stick with it. Once you reach that initial goal, set new ones, etc. (iv) How much money do you have for advertising/marketing? The fun part of making money online is that you don't have to spend money to do it - especially as an affiliate marketer. But, some things you're going to have to do down the line are register a domain name, pay for web hosting, newsletter subscription software (eg, AWeber), etc. I discuss this in detail in the post, Internet Marketing Advice for Beginners: How Much Do You Need to Spend to Consistently 4 Figures Per Month Online?, writing: I only pay roughly $125 per month to operate a business that is well on its way to earning me a steady five figures per month; I've earned four figures per month consistently since 2008 as an affiliate/internet marketer. While operating a web business can be incredibly cheap, the little expenses do add up if you're not prepared to carry them. My advice here is, no matter what opportunity you choose, there's going to come a point where you're going to have to spend money to make (more) money, eg, setting up your own website, starting a newsletter, registering a domain name, etc. Just realize this and plan for it so that when you do start making money online, you can invest that back into your business. (v) How much family support do you have? If you have family/life obligations (eg, children), you're going to have to factor this into how it's going to impact your schedule when you start your online business. This will affect how much time you can devote to your business, which was discussed above. I wanted to address this point separately though because how much family support you have (or don't have) will affect how successful you are as an online business owner. You'd be amazed at how negative and unsupportive some can be when you tell them that you want to start an online business. This can not only dampen your enthusiasm, it can make you doubt yourself. You're already going to be nervous and probably a little doubtful anyway, so you don't need that type of negative energy around you. I discuss this in more detail in the ebook, How to Know When You're Ready to Quit Your Job to Freelance Fulltime: 6 Signs It's Time and How to Go About It, writing: Sometimes people we think mean us well don't. They subliminally [and overtly] sabotage us. You'd be amazed at how a major life change that takes courage (like freelancing) can change the relationships you have. Some people are jealous because they don't have the courage to do what you did. . . . Just be careful of this type of person - and create healthy boundaries to prevent them from impeding your success. Of course, there are many more questions you will want to ask yourself to help you select an ideal online business / affiliate marketing opportunity, but these five are the biggies in my opinion (and experience). III. LEARN SEO In case you don't know, SEO is the acronym for search engine optimization. I don't care what type of online business or affiliate marketing opportunity you choose, you must learn SEO to be successful The reason is, SEO is all about how to drive traffic to a site/blog. Without traffic, you can't make sales. You don't have to become an "SEO guru," but you must know the fundamentals of it to be successful online - whether you're promoting your own products and services, or someone else's. IV. CREATE A MARKETING PLAN Once you learn SEO, then it's time to create a marketing plan. There are three reasons to do this. 3 Reasons You Must Create a Marketing Plan to Start Making Money Online (i) It keeps you focused: There are tons of ways to market online; some are free (eg, article marketing, blogging); some cost (eg, pay per click). While it's ok to use several methods at once, if you start doing too many things too soon, you can become scattered. If you scatter your marketing efforts - especially when you're new to the game - they won't be as effective, and you won't be able to effectively . . . (ii) Track your marketing progress: Knowing what's bringing in clients/sales is important because it shows you where to concentrate your marketing efforts, which brings us to the final point, ie . . . (iii) Learn what works and what doesn't: Once you know what works and what doesn't, you can then fine-tune your marketing efforts. The 5 Marketing Methods I Use the Most to Make Money Online For the record, I use a combination of methods, eg, article marketing, blogging, newsletter publishing, placing free classified ads and social media (Twitter) to drive traffic and sales. Article marketing drives new prospects to my websites (eg, InkwellEditorial.com, SeoWritingJobs.com, FreeAdsSell.info). Blogging and newsletter publishing keeps old prospects/subscribers interested in my products and services. Free classified ad sales is great for making immediate/direct product sales; social media is a good way to keep prospects interested and your biz top of mind over the long haul. Notice how these five methods work to drive immediate and long-term sales. Also note that most of these marketing methods are free, eg, article marketing, Twitter and placing free classified ads. Blogging costs because I pay for web hosting and domain name registration; newsletter publishing costs because I use AWeber to keep track of subscribers, for auto responders, etc. Learn more about why getting - and growing - a subscriber list is critical to your success as an online business owner. V. MAKE TIME TO KEEP LEARNING If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, making money online - no matter what type of business you choose - is a process of trial and error. You're going to try some things that will work out beautifully right from the start; and you'll try others that don't work no matter how much time, money and effort you pour into it. This is why you have to constantly learn new things, then tweak processes and procedures as you gain new knowledge. For example, I stumbled upon how to make money placing free classified ads on backpage. I was successful right out of the box - because I had a hot product. But, it's taken me years to make consistent ebook sales. That's because I didn't know jack about how to market online before I learned SEO. Once I did though, and starting applying this knowledge to my article marketing and blogging efforts, sales became more consistent. See what I mean? Start Making Money Online: Conclusion There is no magic pill or silver bullet that will work for everyone, every time. While making money online is easy, it's the "not knowing" and constantly searching for the easy way out that stalls many. There is no shortcut to having to learn how to do the "boring" stuff like learning SEO, learning how to build and update a wordpress blog, learning how to maneuver around the interface of AWeber, etc. THIS is where success lies. So just decide to stop looking for the shortcuts - and start embracing what is really the "easy" work of learning how to operate an online business. The wonderful thing about starting an online business - as opposed to say an offline brick-and-mortar business -- is that the key steps are basically the same and the information on how to do stuff is so readily available. For example, if you want to know how to start a blog, go to Google and type in "How to Start a Blog." As of this writing, over 300 million results are returned. What do you think your chances of learning how to start a blog are if you spent two hours per day, five days per week, reading - and implementing the steps - outlined some of the excellent, FREE tutorials you're going to come across? Exactly! Now that you know the five steps you need to take to start making money online, here's the answer to another question I get a lot, which is . . . Internet Marketing for Newbies: EXACT Steps to Take After You Register with Any Affiliate Program

I've been in internet marketing since 2008. And, while I'm no guru, I think I assume that those who are very new to affiliate marketing know more than they do (eg, how to sign up to an affiliate program and start promoting products). The following question from someone who signed up to Inkwell Editorial's affiliate program inspired this post: I've I believe that i'm an affiliate of yours. I say that because iv'e tried to sign up to become one. I now have an affiliate ID#, a code#, (dom't know what it is used for)and iv'e also registered a password. The problem is where do i go from here? I need to see products, get hoplinks, buy buttons(if used) sales aids as talked about in news letter. sample articles, How to Write Ebook Reviews, etc. Please help . . . My Answer So here I'm going to walk you through how to get started marketing affiliate products, whether it's Inkwell Editorial's, or another businesses'. 2 Types of Affiliate Programs Before we get to that though, let me start by explaining the two type of affiliate programs you're going to run into. Note: This is according to my experience. I categorize affiliate programs into two groups: (i) those run by independents (like me); and those run through megasites like ClickBank, CommissionJunction, etc. Both are free, but the primary difference you'll find is that megasites tend to have more sales tools to help affiliates once they sign up. Hence, you'll find things like hoplinks* that are automatically created and pre-fabricated Promote buttons like in the graphic below. The reason independent affiliate program operators like me use megasites like Clicbank - in addition to doing their own thing - is that megasites handle all the back-end details like paying affiliates, processing returns, etc. *What is a Hoplink? ClickBank has tens of thousands of e-products for sale. Hence, they need a system that will track affiliate sales. Hence, they created hoplinks, which is the name they use to refer to affiliate links that link back to the ClickBank website. Hoplinks allow Clickbank to accurately record and track affiliate sales. Now that you understand a little more about the behind-the-scenes operations of affiliate programs, let's get to what to do after you sign up. WHAT TO DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU SIGN UP TO AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM Choose a Product to Promote The Inkwell Editorial affiliate who wrote in and inspired this post didn't know what to do next. So after you get all the admin stuff out of the way, eg, opening an affiliate account, getting your Affiliate ID/code/account name, etc., then you need to select a product to promote. As megasites like Clickbank have very clear instructions on how to sign up to and make money with their programs, let's use Inkwell Editorial's product line as an example. Our affiliate program is run through e-Junkie. So, the first step is to sign up. Follow the instructions EXACTLY as outlined on this page: http://inkwelleditorial.com/affiliate-program. If you follow the instructions there, you will be signed up to Inkwell Editorial's affiliate program, which means you'll have log-in information for the site (e-Junkie), as well as your affiliate ID information. Create Your Affiliate Link Once you select the product(s) you want to promote, input your affiliate link. Once you've signed up as an affiliate, log back in using your sign-up information (that is, if you log out) and browse through all of Inkwell Editorial's ebooks there. As you can see, there are many products for affiliates to promote. You can promote as many or as few of them as you want. How to Sell Digital Products Online: Create an Affiliate Link for Inkwell Editorial Ebook Let's say you choose to promote the How to Write an Ebook in 3 Days ebook, which happens to be one of Inkwell's best-selling titles. You'd simply create an affiliate link that will link to this page for that ebook on e-Junkie. Once you log in to e-Junkie, go to the affiliate admin link (see graphic just below). From there, click on Get Affiliate Code. In the box at the top, our name should appear Inkwell Editorial (see graphic below). Once you click on Get Affiliate Code, you will be taken to a page that looks like this: This is the page from which you'll choose which Inkwell Editorial products you want to promote. So, using our example (the How to Write an Ebook in 3 Days ebook), you'd go to the Get Product Specific Affiliate Links section on this page, cursor down to that product and then click on the Get Affiliate Code button. Once you do that, you'll be taken to a page that gives you your affiliate link. This is the link you'll use in all your promotional efforts. It'll look like this: What to Do with Your Affiliate Code Cut and paste it the affiliate code, eg, Click here to view more details onto your website, blog, classified ad postings, etc.. The link will look like this: Click here to view more details. Not to get too technical, but it is the HTML code () that makes the link clickable. You can change the wording to anything you want, eg: Get full details on how to write an ebook quickly. Your link will look like this: Get full details on how to write an ebook quickly; or Learn how to write an ebook and start making money quickly. Your link will look like this: Learn how to wrie an ebook and start making money quickly; or With the instructions here, it's easy to write an ebook and start making money quickly. Your link will look like this: With the instructions here, it's easy to write an ebook and start making money quickly. Etc. The Best Thing about Being an Inkwell Editorial Affiliate We do all the work for you. You don't have to create separate sales pages, websites, blogs, etc. (that is, unless you want to). You see, when you get an affiliate link for our products, those links go right to our sales pages - on InkwellEditorial.com and on our product pages on e-Junkie. As I write most of Inkwell Editorial's ebooks from first-hand experience, I know the best language to use to sell them. All you have to do is drive traffic to these pages - via your affiliate link. How to Write Effective Ebook Reviews One more thing I want address from the reader's email is how to write ebook reviews. How to be Successful as an Affiliate Marketer I can't tell you how many times people will buy my books, then email me questions - before they even read the book. And, about 60% of the times, the answer to the question is . . . in the book. My point is, no matter what kind of business you start - online or off, service-oriented or product oriented - you must, must, must dig into the details. This is where success is found. For example, part of the answer to this reader's question was right there on the site. When instances like this happen, it makes me wonder, how serious the person is about starting this type of business if they haven't done the basics. So when you sign up to an affiliate program, if there are any sales tools presented, go through them and use as many of them as you can that fit into how YOU like to market. Product creators put a lot of thought into them because they want affiliates to be successful. After all, the more money you as an affiliate make, the more money affiliate program operators make. Note: Not every marketing method a product creator outlines is going to work for you. And that's fine. But do put together a marketing plan (Report #1 in the link above tells you why/how to do so). In the last week, I've received a lot of questions about the backpage ebook. I just did an FAQ in December fielding tons of questions about how to make money placing free classified ads on backpage.com. Before I get to this latest round, I want to point out a couple of things because it seems to be a running thread through all of these questions. Editor Note: Get the special deal offered with the backpage ebook. (i) The first thing is, I think most want a guarantee that things are going to work. There is no such thing as a guarantee in internet marketing. I've said time and time and time again that it's trial and error. I lay out a system that has worked for me since January of 2009. But a lot of internet market success depends on the product you're promoting, how consistent you are, the prices of the products you're promoting, how competitive the niche is - and many other factors. There isn't a system on the market that can 100% guarantee you that you're going to have the same results as another online marketer. It simply doesn't exist and if you're looking for one with my system, then please don't buy the ebook. Is Internet Marketing for You? I've found that those who want a guarantee are most often not suited for internet marketing because they don't have the patience to stick with it and will often get frustrated and blame the program creator if things don't work out the way they want. What I CAN GUARANTEE is that if you follow the system I outline it in the backpage ebook, and stick with it until you find a winning product/service, with the right price, that people want - then you will make money. It really is that simple. (ii) The second thing is complication. Too many get ahead of themselves and complicate things before they even get started good. Whichever internet marketing program you invest in, work the system as it's outlined first. Then, after you're comfortable with it, try different things (eg, pay per click). I've tried a few systems, and usually after a while, I tweak them until I find a formula that works - for ME. One buyer who bought the backpage ebook in the spring of 2011 underscores this point; he wrote me stating: The truth is, I initially started testing out various affiliate products and marketing them via Backpage, as it suggests in your ebook. But I went off at a tangent and started marketing musical services . . . since I am a musician myself. Within days of marketing these services on Backpage.com, I ended up getting plenty of enquiries, much to my surprise. Over the past few months I've steadily made money like this, and am very happy, and have branched out to marketing on various other free classified sites and discussion forums. None of that would've been possible if I hadn't read your ebook. See what I mean? As an aside, my methods are for NEW internet marketers who have little to NO money. Hence, the systems and strategies I promote are extremely simple. I started making money on backpage without spending any money. It was 6 months before I even started using the backpage auto posting software, which a friend stumbled upon and told me about. With this insight out of the way, let's get to the specific questions that readers sent in about advertising on backpage. Questions about How to Make Money by Placing Free Ads on Backpage.com 1) Is the system still working as in are you still able to earn $100-$150 or more per day? Yes, as my PayPal graphics show on FreeAdsSell.info (and yes, these are my REAL numbers; not some made-up graphic). The simple fact is, as long as free classified ads sites exist, you will be able to make money as an internet marketer using them. This is not a fly by night, get rich quick SCHEME that's hot one day and cold the next. The reason you'll always be able to make money using free classified ad sites is because they are a marketplace that bring buyers and sellers together. Note: I started promoting one product (in January 2009), which was a hot product at the time. Nowadays, I promote my entire line of ebooks, as well as 2-3 other products I found on Clickbank that perform well. The entire story of how/why I started using backpage is explained in the ebook. 2) Do you still do it with the software you recommend? I rarely place ads myself these days. Luckily, my business has grown to the point where I hired a virtual assistant (VA) who handles tasks like placing ads for me. He does so 5 days a week. 3) Do i have to write many different ads to submit? I can't answer this outright. It depends on the product(s) you're promoting, how often, the price of the product/service you're promoting, how many ads per day you want to place, etc. In short, it's trial and error; and again, most internet marketing is. 4) Can i do CPA using your system? You can promote anything you want using any model you want using backpage. FYI, for those who don't know, CPA (cost per action) is an internet marketing model whereby a payout is based solely on qualifying actions such as sales or registrations. So for example, if your product is a credit card, you'd only receive a commission if a visitor applied for the card. There's a lot of money to be made with this form of internet marketing by the way. 5) Average how many hours (per day) are needed to reach at least $150 per day? Again, this depends . . . in large part on the factors listed in #3 above. What I can tell you is this, when I first started - BECAUSE I was promoting a hot product - I'd spend 2-3 hours per day placing ads manually (eg, without using backpage auto posting software). As I said in #1 above, nowadays, I promote my entire line of ebooks, as well as 2-3 other products I found on Clickbank that perform well. 6) May i have the exact link to the software you recommend as i am confuse which you is using? Get a legitimate copy of the backpage auto posting software. Question from Another Reader about Making Money Posting Ads on Backpage Hi Yuwanda, I have been reading your backpage classifieds book, and I am interested in finding out if there is an update recently? (and how much $$$ for update?) Yes I am a total newbie at this, I have read and learned a lot but this will be my 1st shot at online marketing. I have several questions about posting, trying to figure out how many ads I can post in a day from my (1 IP address) without getting banned or ghosted (does backpage even do ghosting?) actually now that I think about it, I have two IP addresses (two separate computers) also at what point does backpage consider your posting to be spamming? I don't want to get banned and the last thing I want to do is spam anyone... I have read about some people buying 5 or more IP proxy's and using multiple email addresses (is this considered kind of a black hat method, a bit under the table ?) and aren't you just setting yourself up for getting totally banned on backpage or craigslist if you follow these techniques? I am fired up to give this a shot, but I want to keep it 100% white hat and above board. why can't I find any info on how long backpage will keep your ads posted, One guy told me 60 days, someone else told me 30 days ??? I know craigslist is 48hrs. I am also quite interested in your affiliate program, does it sell decent on backpage? Thanks, I will watch for your reply. Hence, the latest copy is always the one that's available. Proxys/Different Email Addresses: I don't get into changing IP addresses, proxys and all that. I keep it simple because again, I'm a relatively new internet marketer myself, so my audience is new internet marketers. I use methods that they can replicate without getting confused. White Hat/Black Hat/Spamming: I discuss spamming, etc., in the ebook and how I've managed not to run afoul of backpage guidelines. How Long Ads Stay Live: Backpage ads stay live for 6 weeks (45 days). I know this because of the renewal notices that come from ads I place. I promote my ebooks on backpage though (as well as ClassifiedAds.com, another free classified ads site I'm becoming fond of), and my sales are consistent. I have to say - and I'm embarrassed to admit this - but I don't do a lot of tracking my sales. I know that most of my sales come from subscribers to my newsletters. I know this because any time I slack off of publishing these, sales slow precipitously, unlike when I slack off on the other two. Question about Backpage Auto Posting Software Hi there I recently purchased an eBook of yours that focused on how one could earn money by advertising on backpage. I purchased the software from creativesystemsoftware and have started to use it, but it doesn't seem to work. It gets stuck when asked to fill in the captcha code and I often get errors warning about multiple posts. I understand that you can get around it by altering the headline slightly, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of the program (i.e. to allow things to be done automatically so you don't have to sit on the computer all day)? Have you found a way to get around this? I'd really appreciate your help. My Answer Let me just say, I've used two backpage auto posting softwares. And, I purchased more software for things like creating web pages automatically, sending emails, etc. I've yet to find one piece of it that works exactly the way it's touted by the program creators. In short, all of it is buggy. Hence, you have to use it to get used to the little quirks that happen. This backpage auto posting software makes posting ads easier and quicker than posting manually, but I haven't found one that you can just set and forget. You have to watch it. And that means sitting at your computer - but not all day, for you can place a couple of hundred ads in less than two hours using it. In short, the software is an amazing tool for the price - and the amount of money you can make by consistently using it. Hope this insight helps. As the holiday season is here, many are looking for ways to make money online -- quick. It may be why I've received quite a few questions over the last few months about making money placing ads on the free classified ads site, backpage.com. If you've wondered about this opportunity, I hope the following QandA will give you further insight so you can make an informed decision. QUESTION HI I've been on your list for a while when I originally was looking at the Backpage posting ebook. I was thinking of trying it out now. However, I haven't seen it around much and was wondering if the backpage posting is still working? And if you like the new backpage poster? I've been looking or a system that works that I can start fairly inexpensively. the reason I'm asking your opinion is because I have recently seen a Craigslist posting system being advertised alot and thought it looked interesting, I went ahead and bought it and now find out that its not working as well as it was originally. So I am a bit tired of spending money on things that dont work. The owner of that program says Backpage doesn't get alot of traffic, so I am confused by different info. I thought maybe you could give me some good answers. I would really appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks ANSWER I still use backpage weekly -- and yes, it still works for me for the products I promote. [Note: I should have told said, an average of weekly. I may post for 5 days straight, then go for five or six days where I don't post. I used to post daily - multiple times a day.] This is a big part of making money online with backpage -- you have to select products that sell. I give guidelines in the ebook on how to choose products from clickbank that have the potential to sell well. As I tell everyone, in internet marketing, there are no guarantees. I've spent time promoting some complete duds, but I kept trying until I found a few products that make me consistent sales. And this is what it takes -- it's a lot of trial and error. Again, there are absolutely no guarantees. But, placing free ads online is one of the easiest ways to make money online. I still can't believe I stumbled on it. Most give up b/c they don't want to go through the trial and error phase. The problem is usually not with the system (eg, placing free ads), but with the products you're selecting, the ads you're writing (that aren't getting clicked on); the number of ads you're placing (or not placing) CONSISTENTLY, etc. This is what it takes to make money placing free classified ads. And, as I said, I've been doing it since January of 2009. As for the fact that backpage doesn't get a lot of traffic, it's a blatant lie and is easy to research, ie: There were 3.1 million unique visitors to Backpage in October, according to Compete.com, a 0.1 percent increase from the previous month, but 11.9 percent higher than the same month a year ago. Along with the increase in revenue and listings, the number of unique visitors to 22 tracked sites that publish listings or reviews of escort services also increased. Total unique visitors in October were 5.6 million, according to Compete.com. That's up 1 percent from the previous month and 11.4 percent from October 2010, when the total was 5.1 million unique visitors. For comparison, Craigslist, the largest classified advertising site, had 63.1 million U.S. unique visitors in October, according to Compete. Use backpage to place ads manually (you can easily do 50-60 per hour by hand). Get a feel for the site, try various products to find a couple of winners; start making some money and THEN buy the software. This way, you get a feel for not only how backpage works, but how to select profitable products to promote, which posting times work best, how to write effective ads, etc. The bottom line is -- don't spend any more than you have to to get started on backpage. And, the software is not necessary to start making sales. My question is....when posting affiliate links in ads, is it possible to hide the affiliate link, so people don't know it's an affiliate link? I tried to use sites like tinyurl to disguise my affiliate links, but it looks like Backpage doesn't allow the use of that. Is there a way round this? Thanks for your time ANSWER Backpage doesn't let you use links like tiny url's (this is a change that went into effect just a few months ago; you used to be able to use shortened links); you're right about that. I have my own sites, so have no need to disguise my links, as I'm usually sending people to a page with more information, where the pertinent product HAPPENS to be listed. That's one of the reasons I started doing minisites, as I talk about in the ebook. It's been my observation though that people don't care if it's an affiliate link, as long as the info dispensed is good and they trust that what you're selling is not a scam. This is one of the reasons I think my method of marketing works so well as opposed to just ads that scream, Buy this! Hope that clarifies things. QUESTION Hi Yuwanda, 1. You said Note: Software only works on PCs; not MACs and can only be used when you post ads from the U.S. or Canada. Now that you live in Jamaica, how do you post ads? I don't know what your objective is, but if it's internet marketing via free classified ads, then I'd say you need the backpage ebook. Of course, if it's ebook writing, you need the 3 day ebook -- they really are separate products altogether. I try never to cover too much of one topic in more than one ebook. Internet Marketing Advice for Beginners: How Much Do You Need to Spend to Consistently 4 Figures Per Month Online?

Let me say upfront, I rarely spend money to make money online. That's because I use free methods to drive traffic to my sites, which produces sales. I also publish three weekly newsletters and I interact on social media. All of this is free. With that being said, following is what my monthly carrying costs are for my entire online business (ebook writing and publishing, affiliate marketing, minisites, etc.), where I consistently earn four figures per month.. My Monthly Internet Marketing Budget: What I Spend to Make Money Online I use AWeber (http://bit.ly/aWkstE) to manage newsletter subscribers, which is about $30 per month. Learn why buildilng a subscriber list is extremely important in affiliate marketing. I use Content Crooner (http://bit.ly/ca9G1U) for article distribution. This is $39.99 per month. For auto download and deliver of my ebooks, I use e-Junkie (http://bit.ly/lVibcA). Right now, I pay $18 per month. This increases with the number of products you have on the site. As of this writing, I have close to 60. I pay $9.95 per month in web hosting fees. I use HostGator. Read why they're my preferred web hosting vendor at http://bit.ly/jOtiNR, and why you should consider them to. I pay roughly $120/year (or $10 month) for domain name registration fees (I have about a dozen website names registered). I have a secondary host company that I use to host some of my sites. I pay $29.95 per quarter ($10 month) for this service. I pay $5 per month for a service that allows me to create my own ebook covers (I split this with my sister); the service is $9.95 per month. Internet service: $60/month Total Cost to Run a Business That's Well On Its Way to Earning Me 5 Figures Per Month Approximately $183/month - and $60 (internet service at home) is something I'd be paying even if I didn't have a web-based business. Hence . . . I only pay roughly $125 per month to operate a business that is well on its way to earning me a steady five figures per month; I've earned four figures per month consistently for since 2008 as an affiliate/internet marketer. Compare that to owning a brick and mortar business where you'd have to pay commercial rent, carry insurance, etc. I've gone this route and let me tell you, it's expensive! See why owning a web-based business can be so lucrative and is the ideal type of business for newbies? The start-up - and monthly - carrying costs are next to nothing. In 2008, eMarketer.com, a research/marketing firm that tracks digital marketing and media, predicted that e-commerce sales would increase an average of 18.6% per year through 2009. Fast forward to 2011. According the article, Big Growth In U.S. Retail Ecommerce Sales Predicted: eMarketer forecasts $269.8 billion in 2015 (http://bit.ly/dVK0aF), on WebProNews.com: Companies that sell stuff online may have a rather profitable stretch of years ahead of them . . . eMarketer thinks U.S. retail ecommerce sales will climb at healthy rates through at least 2015. It seems the industry should see a 13.7 percent rise this year (2011) compared to last, and although things will slow down over time, a whopping 43.4 percent improvement is supposed to occur if you put the figures for 2011 and 2015 side by side (emphasis added). So, consumers are shopping online more and more. Hence, if you learn how to sell to them now (ie, perfect your affiliate/online marketing techniques), you'll earn more later. They are: Leverage Your Time By leveraging your time though, you can get up and running as an affiliate marketer by outsourcing stuff you don't know how to do (eg, set up a wordpress blog), then digging in and learning as you go. I've done this so many times as an affiaite marketer. For example, when I decided to create passive income via Google AdSense minisites, I had no idea how to set up a wordpress blog. You see, all of my training is in HTML; I know how to do simple sites using this platform. But, it was quickly becoming obsolete (and ineffective). So after procrastinating for probably close to a year or so, I finally hired someone to create my first wordpress blog. And, you know what, it only cost $40 and just one of those sites earn me over $300 per month. This doesn't include the affiliate product sales I earn from it, which averages out to anywhere between $500-$1,500 per month. See how much procrastinating on learning to do something can cost you? As a product creator, I put an ebook on Clickbank in hopes that others will want to promote it for 50% of the profit. Well apparently, someone with a large subscriber list (or who is a master marketer) decided to promote my ebook and the sales just kept coming in as the graphic below illustrates. Click image for larger view. I leveraged the relationship that this promoter has with his subscriber list. As I talk about in this post on why it's important to build an opt-in subscriber list: Your subscribers are the lifeblood of your business. The thing is though, depending on your niche, you don't even have to have thousands of subscribers to make a decent income as an affiliate marketer. One of the great things about leveraging relationships is that it can be reciprocal. What I mean by this is, I obviously leveraged this internet marketer's relationship with his subscribers. But, this in and of itself is not enough to make the sale. Prospects need to believe in the product/service being promoted. As a long-time freelance writer, I have the experience, education, background and online reputation to back up my claims in the ebook of mine this online marketer was promoting. So, this made it an easy sale for him. We each gained by leveraging in this instance. You want to look for products and services to promote online where the product creator does have a trusted reputation and can back up claims they make about their product/service. This makes it easier or you to sell it because a purchasing barrier is removed. You see, your job as an affiliate marketer should be to prime prospects to buy; to presell them. You do this by sending qualified leads via your affiliate link. After this, your job is done. It's the actual merchant's job (the product/service creator) to close the sale. So keep these this in mind when choosing affiliate products to promote. As I pointed out in the last issue of this newsletter, internet marketing has a busy and a slow season. Well, the busy season is definitely here if recent sales by a couple of my affiliates from Clickbank are anything to go by. After we look at some actual numbers, I want to talk to you about how lucrative creating your own products to sell online can be. And, I'll give you some pointers on what to do -- and what not to do -- based on my experience. How Would Earning a Couple of Hundred Bucks Per Day Change Your Life? Since 9/19, my ebook sales from Clickbank totaled $1,038.70 (see Clickbank ebook sales graphic below). This ebook retails for $39.95. As the vendor (ie, product creator), I sold two copies. The other 24 sales came from affiliates. You can now access all past issues of this newsletter by clicking http:/aweber.com/archive/freeadssell. ********************************************************* After Clickbank deducts their fees and the affiliates are paid - all of which Clickbank handles so you as the ebook writer/publisher don't have to worry about it -- the numbers shake out like this . . . 12 commissions at $17.76, which equals $213.12; 9 commissions at $17.97, which equals $161.73; 2 commission at $35.95, which equals $71.90; 1 commission at 17.85; 1 commission at 17.77; and 1 commission at 17.93 . . . for a 2.5 day total of $500.30. And remember, this is just from Clickbank. It doesn't include ebook sales form my sites (InkwellEditorial.com, FreelanceWritingWebsite.com, FreeAdsSell.info, etc.); from Amazon or from LuLu - which are all other places I sell my ebooks. As these numbers illustrate, creating and selling your own products/services online can be lucrative - very lucrative. My numbers are nothing compared to what a lot of the really successful internet marketers earn - but they outpace what many earn on jobs that pay $30,000 to $50,000 per year. Guidelines for Creating Your Own Product/Service to Sell Online I can't tell you a specific product to create that will sell. What I can give you are some guidelines to follow that are based on my personal experience, and on what internet marketing gurus say. I. Learn about search engine optimization (SEO): Specifically study what keyword research is all about. Why? Because this will teach you not only how to figure out what sells online and what doesn't, but how to market so you can make money online. My internet marketing career literally took off once I learned the intricacies of SEO. If you don't know at least the basics of SEO, it's like marketing online in the dark. As I discuss in the ebook, How to Make Money Online: A Simple Tutorial for New Internet Marketers, you'll needlessly struggle to make money on the internet for years - and perhaps even give up - all because you didn't take the time to learn HOW to market on the web. There's a lot - and I do mean a lot - of money to be made online. And learning SEO can help you to achieve success that much quicker. Niche It: I was doing some research for the aforementioned ebook recently, and was simply astounded to learn that almost 750,000 new web presences are registered and/or go live - every day. That's not a typo. When I did a report for a client back in 2008, it was just 100,000. My point? The web is a very crowded place - and is getting more so every day. But, this is a good thing - if you carve out a niche for yourself. For example, I'm a freelance writer; SEO writing happens to be one of my specialties. If you type keywords related to this industry into your favorite search engine (eg, SEO writing; SEO writing jobs), you're probably going to run into something written by me. Proof? So if you want to create a product or service to sell online, don't try to be everything to everybody. Carve out a niche for yourself - and market the hell out of it! III. Don't Do It Just for the Money: I don't care how much money you think you can make creating a product/service to sell - if you don't love the subject matter (the niche), you won't stick with it long enough to be successful at it. And that's just the plain truth of it. Case in point, I publish a few minisites to earn money via Google AdSense. One of them is SummerWeddingTips.com. But, I don't update the site very often because I don't like the subject matter. The site still earns about $30/month, even though I rarely update it. If I loved the subject matter, this is a site I could easily see earning 4 figures a month within 6 months or so. But, because I have other projects that are labors of love, I don't bother with this site much. FYI, it's for sale (not too cheaply because of its earning potential). So if you're interested, make me a serious offer and we'll go from there. To make money online, you have to market, learn new technology, answer customer inquiries, update info, etc. In short, you marry your product/service. And if you don't' like who you're married to . . . well, we know how that eventually ends now don't we. There's much more to making money online when you create your own product /service to sell. But, in my opinion - and experience - these are three of the biggest factors that must be in place to ensure success. And that's this issue's internet marketing for beginner's lesson.
