    Ask the Therapist

Question: I am struggling with some issues related to my faith. How can I align what I am learning in therapy with my spirtual perspective? Answer: Therapy is most helpful when it aligns with our spiritual beliefs or faith perspective. This is why it is important to choose a therapist who understands your faith background and/or operates their practice from the same perspective. Since our human condition involves our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self, it is most effective to consider the spiritual impact and issues when working through issues in therapy. We are integrated beings -- what we do physically does effect our mind and spirit. This is evidenced over and over again in stress-related conditions and diseases. We cannot dissociate ourselves from the mental, emotional and spiritual realms and be fully functional and whole. Living wholly means to consider the impact of what we think on how we feel, as well as what we do physically and spiritually. To compromise one's own values through engaging in an ineffective or addictive behaviour often creates shame and guilt on an emotional level, which often leads to internal symptoms in the body. This is why it is important to be mindful of the mind, body, and soul connection.
    Humour Helps

I recently went deep sea fishing with my husband and my oldest son. We set out with another tourist from Scotland and one from England. We took turns sitting in the "captain's seat" and whoever got a bite got to reel the fish in. During the first shift, my son got a nibble and ended up reeling in a very big fish -- a 40 pound "wahoo." That's right! A fish called a wahoo! I wanted to catch one just because of the name! WAHOO!!!!! As you can imagine, we've had lots of fun with that fish's name and continue to cry out wahoo at almost any time that it seems amusing. I was not without my seaward victory -- reeling in a much smaller barracuda. Barracuda is not quite as entertaining as wahoo. Unfortunately, I also discovered an affinity with sea sickness and had a moment of truly relating with my bulimic clients on a very deep level!
