STEALING ONLINE WORK

Yep, it happened again. Someone stole material from FundsforWriters
and used it for personal gain on her blog. Usually it's my material,
but this time a lady copied the feature article and popped it into
her blog. She didn't call it her own, thank goodness, but she used
reprint rights without permissions, against the author's wishes.
She even refused to take it down.

"Control C" makes poems and heady posts of advice too easy to
"borrow." It's so easy, frankly, that many people don't realize
that copying an article into another site is stealing.

The author contacted me, and along with Angela Hoy at Writers
Weekly.com, we contacted the "borrower" and demanded the piece
be retracted and the author paid. Amazingly, for a while the
person dug in her heels, professing that "all SEO articles can
be replicated." She claimed to know her SEO writer rights. She
stated the author should be honored that this writer took the
article and circulated it, even taking it so far as to say
she was offered "free" advertisement she could otherwise be
charged for.

SEO writers don't have separate rights, and copyright laws
mean don't use without permission. Period. Further investigation
found that the woman had lifted several articles from other sites,
with the misunderstanding that as long as she references the other
site, she could do with them as she pleases.

The post is down now, but the author isn't compensated. I doubt
she will be. As predicted, the woman used offense as her defense,
threatening to tell her attorney. We aren't holding our breath.

The bottom line is this...if you profess to be a writer, if you
manage a blog, if you use words in any manner to further yourself,
make them original or get permission from the original creator.
Don't guess if you can use them.

Besides, wouldn't you like to be remembered for your words
instead of someone else's?

I have subscribed to your site for many years, sometimes
reading the whole message, sometimes being too pressed for
time to read much.

A former American Diplomat, I had a yen to write.  A whistle
blower, I did not fare well and did manage to retire, but
with a pension that did/does not support us well. I also have
a family who needed sustenance, so I have worked long, sometimes
hard hours. Every week, I received a reminder from you that if
I continue working, I might succeed.

Your site, has given me hope, and I did start working on a book
some months after the 9/11 attacks. You see, I spent a decade
in the Middle East and have a unique perspective on Islam, the
religion of "Peace".  I also had the highest levels of TOP SECRET
security clearances with code word access to sensitive,
compartmentalized intelligence (SCI) which dictated that anything
I write must be submitted for review.

My manuscript was sent for review a year ago this month, and it
was returned with 'redactions' last September.

I have at long last self-published my book, Di Di Daw Daw Di Di,

Writing for the Homeschool Market

One question that I frequently hear is: "How does a writer
break into the homeschool market?" There's really no secret
formula to writing for homeschoolers, but if you aren't
acquainted with homeschooling it might seem intimidating.
Here are a few insider tips to help get you started on the
right foot.

Read homeschool publications. There are several national
homeschool magazines, such as The Link, The Old Schoolhouse
Magazine, Home Education Magazine, and Home School Enrichment.
Homeschool magazines can be found at many bookstores and
libraries, either in their regular periodical section or in
the children's department. Check out the magazines' websites,
too, to familiarize yourself with articles. Sample issues are
available; check writer's guidelines for details.

A great way to gain inspiration, first hand knowledge, and
credibility is to talk to homeschooling families. Find out
what motivates them to homeschool. What's their educational
philosophy? Do they prefer certain teaching methods? Do they
have any inspiring stories? A few words of caution: homeschooling
has received some negative press, and many homeschoolers have
encountered disapproval. Families may be cautious about strangers
asking questions, so don't be offended if all homeschoolers
don't welcome you with open arms. If they sense that you have
a genuine interest, however, most will be open to discussion.

Many magazines have a calendar with themes; others accept all
types of articles anytime. A homeschool family interview might
produce a "Day in the Life" article, popular with many magazines.
Consider interviewing local group leaders. Ask them about their
group's co-ops, activities, field trips or service projects. Or,
interview regional or national homeschool leaders, speakers, or
authors.

Educational projects make great articles. Projects must be user
friendly and suitable for home or small group use. Don't try to
mimic classroom lesson plans, most are geared to large numbers
of students and don't always suit the homeschool environment.
Consider grouping age levels together, such as K-2, 3-5, 6-8,
and 9-12. There is a better chance of acceptance if the project
covers a range since families often teach more than one grade
level at a time. Topic ideas such as arts and crafts, science
experiments, social studies projects, seasonal or current event
activities, and money management are good places to start.
Review the magazines for format and content examples.

Finally, make sure that your article or query is homeschooler
friendly. Homeschool magazine editors, like any others, are a
discerning bunch, and they won't be fooled by insincerity or a
condescending attitude. The editor will toss your paperwork in
a heartbeat, just like in any other market, so do your homework.

in the mountains of the northeastern U.S. The Waterman Fund is
seeking personal essays about stewardship of wild places,
whether through a scientific lens or an encounter with wildness.
The winning piece will be published in Appalachia Journal. The
winning essayist will be awarded $1,500. Honorable mention will
receive $500. All are encouraged to submit. Essays must be original
works ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 words. Writers who have not
published a book on such a topic or who have not been published in
a national magazine on such a topic are eligible for participation.

2010-2011 academic year. The position is a paid undergraduate
assistantship. Job responsibilities include helping to organize
meetings with the Grassroots staff and other Grassroots editors,
soliciting submissions and advertising the magazine, helping to
design and lay out the magazine, assisting with the Devil's
Kitchen Literary festival, and plenty of other odd tasks that
the magazine requires.  As a co-editor, the student will work
with two other editors, another co-editor and an editor in chief,
as well as the grassroots staff and various members of the
English department staff. This is a great opportunity for anyone
who is interested in publishing, literature, or creative writing!

The job is $10/hour and is 10 hours a week.  Co-editors are
required to keep some set office hours every week in the Grassroots
office.  An interest and a passion for literature is a must have;
InDesign skills are desired, but not necessary.
