PLURAL+ 2012 Youth Video Festival on Migration and Social Inclusion Calls for Youth Participation

Posted onFebruary 14, 2012

Español Français Arabic
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
again invite the world's youth to submit original and creative videos
focusing on PLURAL+ themes: migration, diversity and social inclusion.
Recognizing youth as powerful agents of social change in a world
often characterized by intolerance, and cultural and religious
divisions, PLURAL+ invites youth to address key challenges in their
communities related to migrant integration, inclusiveness, identity,
diversity, human rights and social cohesiveness, both at local and
global levels. Young people up to 25 years old are invited to submit
short videos of five minutes maximum in length.
Marc Scheuer, Director of the UNAOC, said "PLURAL+ videos fit very
well in this very relevant conversation: how to build more inclusive
societies where we can all live together in harmony." Michele
Klein-Solomon, Permanent Observer to the United Nations, IOM, added
"PLURAL+ videos touch very sensitive issues in a very real way. They
look at the realities that people are facing; we like to see young
people expressing their profound ideas in a manner that allows the
opening of a dialogue."
Independent media producer and PLURAL+ 2011 jury member Renzo Devia
said, "I was amazed to see how these young film makers created these
videos and I really appreciate the work they put into these productions.
Probably the most impressive thing is the stories. I learned a lot from
different cultures and social issues in various nations".
PLURAL+ supports young people's expression of their opinions by
providing them with a variety of media platforms and distribution
networks, including broadcasts, video festivals, conferences and events
around the world. PLURAL+ not only provides young people with an
effective platform to express themselves on key migration and diversity
issues, but also reinforces the firm belief of IOM and UNAOC that youth
are powerful and creative agents of social change.
A prestigious international jury will select three winners in each
age categories (9-12, 13-17, 18-25). All the winners will be invited to
New York, all travel expenses paid, to present their work at PLURAL +
2012 Awards Ceremony at the Paley Center for Media on 6th December 2012.
PLURAL+ partner organizations will also award other prizes and
professional opportunities, such as winning participants presenting
their work at film and video festivals, conferences and events around
the world.
PLURAL + 2012 deadline for video submission is 1 July, 2012. Early
submissions are encouraged. Further information, including guidelines,
regulations, awards, and the entry form can be found at the PLURAL+
website at: http://pluralplus.unaoc.org

Best Wishes for 2012! by United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations

Posted on January 3, 2012

Let me extend to you all, friends, partners and supporters of the Alliance of
Civilizations, my heartfelt good wishes for a Happy New Year! As the melody by late
singer Nina Simone goes It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life. These are my
best wishes for 2012.
Let us hope that this new time to come will bring progress, prosperity and peace in
particular for the bottom billion of the earth's people. But let us go further and work
together to join with millions of citizens, men, women, youth and children around the
world to help them to pursue a better life. Let us commit ourselves with the people in
every country and of every culture and faith to speak out for respect for their universal
rights and fundamental freedoms. Let us stand up with young people around the world
and join efforts to live up to their aspirations for a life in dignity and respect. Let us
speak up against rising intolerance, xenophobia and racism in so many parts of the
world.
As the High Representative for UNAOC, I am committed to do whatever I can to make
2012 the Year of the Alliance.
In the wake of our 4th Global Forum, held last December in Qatar, which culminated a
year of efforts aimed at giving a new impetus to the Alliance by enriching its strategic
outlook, its agenda and its tools, it is now time to renew the global commitment to the
Alliance.
Throughout 2012 with your support and active participation, I hope to rebuild a
stronger sustainable Alliance as a UN platform for flexible and effective soft power
action more able to deliver on-the-spot results. Let us pursue our journey all together
through the New Year! Best wishes for 2012.
- Jorge Sampaio

More than 2,500 participants, including political and corporate leaders, civil society activists and faith communities gathered to discuss how to improve relations across cultures, combat prejudice and build lasting peace.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged members of the Alliance of Civilizations to combat extremism and promote tolerance at a time when universal values are being tested in many parts of the world, particularly in countries undergoing political transitions.
Again and again, we are reminded that our differences are nothing compared to our shared humanity, Mr. Ban said in his remarks to the opening session.

Australia's Foreign Minister The Hon. Kevin Rudd MP summarised his presentation with: How do we get Diversity, Dignity and Dialogue... 1. Through laws - become Australian naturally and not by force or assimilation, 2. Unfold new political and social forces and leadership, 3. Education, and 4. Allow civil society organisations to ourish. To watch the presentation video, please click here.

The general consensus during the conference was that peace was a precondition for sustainable development and that looking at issues of difference in permanently diverse and globalised societies, along with civil society participation, was a necessity.

UN Alliance of Civilizations IV annual
Forum to be held December 11-13, 2011 in Doha, Qatar, under the theme
'Intercultural Dialogue to Boost Development'
Posted on December 7, 2011

Starting Sunday, December 11, the United Nations Alliance of
Civilizations will convene over three days its fourth Annual Forum in
Doha, Qatar, at a pivotal time in the region.
At the occasion of the UNAOC Forum in Doha, over 2,500 political and
corporate leaders, civil society activists, youth groups, faith
communities, research centers, foundations, journalists, ministers, and
heads of state will come together to agree on joint actions to improve
relations across cultures, combat prejudice and build lasting peace.
Hosted by the ruling Emir of the State of Qatar Hamad bin Khalifa Al
Thani, the Forum will count among its attendees the High Level Group
member from Qatar H. H. Sheikha Mozah, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,
and High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations President
Jorge Sampaio. Several Heads of State also announced their participation
to the Forum, including the President of Austria Heinz Fischer, the
President of Germany Christian Wulff, and a number of ministers of
foreign affairs including from the Government of Spain and Turkey - the
sponsor countries of the UNAOC - and of Australia, Indonesia,
Luxembourg, among others. Several personalities such as Secretary
General of the Arab League Nabil Elaraby, Secretary General of the OIC,
IOM, UNESCO, UNWTO and the Union for the Mediterranean, as well as high
representatives from the African Union, the European Parliament, HRH
Prince Hassan Bin Talal and HRH Princess Rym Ali of Jordan, and eminent
scholars such as J. Esposito or Jeffrey Sachs, will also attend the
Forum.
The UNAOC's Forum in Doha will be a milestone in the UNAOC's
existence. In Qatar, the UNAOC, the host government, and numerous
partners will make headway for global intercultural dialogue to emerge
as a key driver for development, security and peace. Under the theme 'Intercultural Dialogue to Boost Development',
high-level debates on how advancing towards the goals of the UNAOC can
contribute to foster sustainable development and, in particular,
achievement of the MDGs, will be conducted.
The Doha Forum will be a platform to share ideas and learn from each
other, present new initiatives and announce exciting commitments from
partners and the organizers. The program will also feature
project-specific working sessions, interactive discussions and debates,
as well as provide a convening space for civil society organizations to
present their exciting initiatives. Over 400 youth and 300 civil
society organizations representatives will participate in the Forum,
half of whom are from the Arab region.
Participants will tackle issues such as: the challenge of promoting
integration in multicultural societies, how cultural diversity can
bolster development and create jobs, the role of women in sustainable
development, the role of religious leaders in promoting peace and
development, and the impact of media on perceptions of other cultures.
Ten years past 9/11, the Doha Forum will also focus on the West-Islam
relations, the main raison d'être of the Alliance and will address how
to counter rising discrimination, prejudices and hat speech that fuel
tensions and extremism.
Through roundtables, workshops and debates, participants will put
their minds together to agree on joint actions and make pledges. The
Forum will also host a Head of States Summit taking place on December
11.
This year, the UNAOC is also in partnership with a number of media
organizations such as Al Jazeera, Google, France 24, Euronews, National
Geographic, but also corporations such as BMW for the intercultural
innovation award, or research centers such as the Brookings Institute.
The Forum will be fully webcast on the Qatar4unaoc.Org website.

Citizen Diplomacy : How Ordinary People can Change the World

Photo: GDF

14 November 2011 -
Last Tuesday 8th November, Global Dialogue Foundation together with ACCESS-Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) presented an event entitled, Citizen Diplomacy : How Ordinary People can Change the World.
As an emerging topic, Citizen Diplomacy aims at empowering ordinary citizens to strengthen inter-cultural ties, raise awareness and promote worldwide cultural understanding to overcome adversities. Unlike conventional diplomacy that involves state officials and not always the public, this practice strictly involves people-people ties and is gradually being adopted in practice by the United Nations and other organisations.
Ms. Melissa Conley Tyler - AIIA's National Executive Director, introduced and defined the term 'Citizen Diplomacy'. The reason Citizen Diplomacy matters is because we depend on others. How others view us matters to our security, our prosperity. It matters broadly, she said.
Highlighting AIIA's activities in Citizen Diplomacy, including a Forum presented in Canberra on the topic in June 2011 and last month's Indonesia-Australia Dialogue, Ms. Conley Tyler provided insightful perspectives and further reasons for increasing citizen-citizen contact as a method for building partnerships between countries.

As case examples of engaging organisations at the grassroots level, Mr. Peter (Pece) Gorgievski - CEO of the Global Dialogue Foundation presented initiatives developed with its partners under the auspices of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in both Australia and India, aimed at promoting understanding among different cultures and contributing to strengthening ties between the two countries.
One of the main focus areas for Global Dialogue Foundation moving forward, is to develop civil society chapters that work together under the umbrella of the Alliance, so that each culture and community may represent its own voice, its needs, and find itself among organisations that are like-minded and with similar objectives, said Mr. Gorgievski.

The third speaker, Mr. Ikani Taliai - Founder of Ovava Limited and also a Pacific Islands and Tongan community leader, spoke about some of the issues faced by the Pacific Islands communities in Australia.

Mr. Taliai is one of the pioneers behind establishing United Pacifika Council of Victoria, a new peak body that aims to support its communities to better organise and modernise, to establish local partnerships, and to add greater value to the Australian society.

Expressing appreciation for the opportunities to bring his community into the discussion and to have a presence through Global Dialogue Foundation with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Mr. Taliai welcomed citizen diplomacy as a promising tool for stimulating discussion among different cultures and communities and for further strengthening ties throughout the Pacific region.

In part 2 of her presentation, Ms. Conley Tyler elaborated on the role of AIIA.

The event included audience interaction, with questions on citizen empowerment, media, among others.

Citizen Diplomacy : How Ordinary People can Change the World was a GDF and ACCESS-AIIA partnership event held at Dyason House in East Melbourne, on Tuesday 8 November 2011.
