Ocean's Eleven Style Sand Testing

Published: Fri, 10/16/15

Hello,

The movie “Ocean’s Eleven” is a great flick from 2001. It’s a casino heist film with an all star cast, led by Clooney and Pitt. They assemble a great team to go in and steal loads of cash from a vault that serves multiple casinos.

Clooney and Pitt’s characters assemble a team based on the necessary skills that they will need to pull off the job.

The team ultimately consists of:

Pickpocket and con man played by Matt Damon
Inside man casino worker, played by the late, great Bernie Mac
Two mechanics, played by Casey Affleck and Scott Caan
Electronics and surveillance expert
Explosives guy, played by Don Cheadle
Elderly con man, played by old Carl Reiner
The money man who bankrolls the job, played by Elliott Gould
An acrobatic “grease man” to hide in a small box needed for the heist

The team members are eccentric, funny, and it makes for an excellent ensemble cast.

Sand testing is a bit like this Ocean’s Eleven strategy — you need to evaluate your sand for ALL the possible roles, or markets, depending on its qualities!

Each of the markets for sand has different — in some cases overlapping — requirements. There are lots of prospective markets for your sand:

-Frac sand
-Water well packing sand
-Metallurgical sand
-Electronics sand
-Glass making sand
-Refractory sand

So to help you decide where to go with your sand, we developed a Sand Evaluation Testing Package, where you get the following things done for your sand:

-Wash and dry
-Sieve analysis
-Whole rock analysis, which tells you the the major oxides, of which silica (SiO2) is of high importance
-Sphericity and roundness on a selected size
-Bulk density
-Crush testing

With these test results in hand, we can give you a good idea of what roles your sand might be able to fit into. We use our proprietary “Sand Market Matrix” as part of the report, and show you where your sand might “fit” into the market.
