A Hidden Barite Need

Published: Mon, 03/09/15

Another demand for barite has recently come to my attention, in an industry other than oil & gas or the paint manufacturing industry.

A buyer contacted me, and had a barite request for the following use:

* Making concrete more dense

This company is in the business of making concrete barriers and counterweights, and they can use barite as their agent to make the product heavy.

He stated that they have multiple factories around the world, and in addition to barite, he could also use iron ore or mill scale to do the job.

But, he said they would like to start using more barite in their process.

So, there you have another use for some of that barite supply. (Or another reason to go find some barite!)

Here were his requirements as of today:

* He could take multiple forms, including lump, but no bigger than 8-10mm
* Specific gravity needed to be as high as possible, 4.2 - 4.4.
* Capacity is not extremely high yet (200 tons per month per plant) but he expects that to grow; they are expanding into new areas like the US

As always, you can send barite samples to us at the lab here, and we can perform barite testing to all sorts of specifications, including API 13A specs, EPA specs for heavy metals, XRD testing (to determine the percentage of barite), and straight up density testing by itself.
