Singing under the ice
Hi there ,
Today's Text:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path. Proverbs 3:5,6.
If ever there is an environment that is tough, it is this one, underneath the pack ice, in the freezing cold Arctic Ocean.
Does it get any more inhospitable - for mammals? Animals that breathe air!
And yet these mammals, which spend most of their lives down under the ice, diving to depths of almost 600 metres, have a joyful nickname - sea canaries.
Canaries are known for their lively and cheerful whistles, and so too these under water mammals spend much of their life singing their little hearts out. Their high pitched whistles, clicks and clangs can even be heard above the ice.
Who are these arctic singers? The Beluga Whales.
Belugas are small white whales that grow to be about 6 metres long, which is not quite as long as a school bus. They weigh about one and a half ton and are very good swimmers. Aside from their striking white skin, which amazingly is a reddish or greyish brown when they are born, they have a large distinctive bump on their forehead. This bump looks just like a lump of fat covered with skin sitting on their head, and while it's true that it does contain a lot of fat; this is not just your average lump of fat! This bump is a sound resonance chamber and this chamber even changes shape when the belugas make different sounds. A bump with purpose!
Belugas also don't have dorsal fins (fin on their back) and have seven vertebrae in their necks which are not fused together, giving them great flexibility and allow them to move their head in any direction. These two traits, combined with echolocation, help them swim very close to the ice and find holes to take that very necessary breath of fresh air. Our God doesn't need a "version two" when it comes to designing His creation.
As with all of God's creatures, there is something we can learn from the beluga. While they do migrate and swim in sub-arctic waters, they spend most of their lives under and around the harsh arctic pack ice, in the freezing Arctic Ocean. But the beluga, God's little white whale, has been given by His all-knowing Creator the necessary physical design, energy and attitude to survive. No matter how dark the water, how cold the temperature, the belugas keep swimming and keep singing their little hearts out.
You know, I believe that our God has put within each one of us the ability to keep swimming and keep singing too, no matter what. Sometimes it feels like our lives are spent mostly under the arctic blast of hardship, financial stress, relational turmoil, fear and loss. But if we hold onto Jesus, keep trusting and talking, keep asking for His guidance, He will lead us, not only through our day, but safely to our eternal home. God said in His book, the Bible, that as we "...in all our ways acknowledge Him, He will direct our paths." (Proverbs 3:5,6) He also said that "...there is no temptation fallen upon man that He will not make a way of escape." (1 Cor. 10:13.)
So, whether you're having a great week or a tough one, remember the beluga, the small white whale and ask God to help you keep your melon singing no matter what.
