Hey ,Back in January I made the big announcement about our soon-to-be little Murphy. Since then it's been a whirlwind of new experiences and emotions, even for a tough guy like me. I've even been writing about my experiences along the way. Have you read them yet? I'm told they're pretty funny but don't take my word for it, click here to join in on my journey as a new dad-to-be. Here's a little teaser from my latest post:

Hey guys,

It's been a crazy few months at Murphy HQ. We've been working on re-branding and developing our new
website, which we finally launched this week! It's been a good ride with The Healthy Irishman but the
time has come to break out using the name I was born with. Not that we're losing The H.I.---our event
business will always be the The Healthy Irishman, Inc. so I'm not losing too much of my playful moniker.
After all it fits me to a T.

Remember what the old site looked like? Here's a peak at the new site:

(Just click it to go to the real deal!!)

As always, any feedback is appreciated!

And don't forget to bookmark the new site to make sure you're up to date with any new posts.

Welcome to all the new subscribers!

Cheers!

Gav

PS--

We've added lots of new content so be sure to browse through the whole site and spread the word!

Are you ready for some football?

Did you mean Super Bowl grub n beers? You betcha!
Truth be told (you may already know this if you've been reading the site) I'm not much of a football fan. Of American football, that is. I'm pretty much that Irish guy who keeps near the buffet within an arms length of the keg. Though I've got to say I've lucked out in the last couple of years since my Super Bowl experiences have been around fellow foodies. Just means most of the buffet isn't too terrible for my reputation to tuck into. Let's face it, the more crap food on the buffet the harder it is to steer clear of it, especially after a few beers.

That's why I'm writing this---to help you to tackle this weekend with your head held high. I've got some great recipes that will keep you nourished and satisfied, not bloated or running on empty calories--after all, that's what the beers are for! It's all about balance, right? Click the links to the right and you'll be in business. Don't forget you already have some great party recipes from your Healthy Irishman Entertainment Guide. If you know know anyone who would like those recipes ask them to sign up here!

May the best team win!

Cheers,
Gav

PS--
Did you see my article about bagged lettuce? If you tend to buy any of these there's important information you should know!

  HELLO 2010!

Can you believe we're already nearing the end of the first month in 2010? (My, how time flies!) Feels like just yesterday I was knee deep in turkey giblets. Speaking of, I hope you and yours had a lovely holiday season! I'm feeling good energy for this new year, are you?

If you've been keeping up with my site you've seen a few obvious changes--like the sidebar on the main blog page is gone!! The search bar, links, archives and such are missing but if you click on any other page they're there, go figure. Just like that they went MIA and lord knows I'm no techie so I'm taking it as a sign for change. I've been talking about re-branding to GavanMurphy.com and changing the site to reflect the new brand so I guess the time has come! I'd love any input you might have for the new site so please don't be shy.

Other than that we're working hard on new healthy recipes to keep you sticking to your resolutions and to keep you eating well. (If you've missed any of these healthy recipes they're all listed on the right.) We've been a little slow this week due to the rain---I know that sounds crazy but seriously rain in LA makes the city stop along with our power supply. Yep, there are power outages all over the shop. Guess this makes up for all the glorious weather we had while the rest of the world was under ice and snow.

On that note, I'd better grab my waterproof flip flops.

Cheers!
Gav

PS - I am thankful for all your support!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Hey guys,
Can you believe it's the eve of Thanksgiving? (My, how time flies!) If you've been keeping up with my site you've seen all the healthy Thanksgiving recipes we've been doing. (If you haven't seen the recipes no need to worry--they're all linked on the side panel.) Valerie, that cute blonde celebrity trainer pictured above, asked me to demonstrate some healthy holiday recipes for her Red Carpet Ready TV show. It was a blast as usual. We made an Autumn Tagine, which is a great vegetarian option to make. Stuffed in a squash bowl it makes an outstanding presentation. Click the picture to see the show!

We also made homemade cranberry-orange relish. Forget those canned versions! This recipe is easy, healthy and delicious. Best of all, it's fresh and homemade. At the last possible hour I'm sending these recipe to you so you can make healthy food this holiday season. But don't be bummed if you don't open this email until after 'Tanksgiving' because both of these recipes can also be used at Christmas. Think about all the holiday parties coming up. The tagine makes a great potluck meal and you can make jars of homemade cranberry relish as hostess gifts or Chrimbo presents. Who doesn't like something homemade and thoughtful?

CRANBERRY ORANGE RELISH

Cranberries are quite bitter so the majority
of recipes use sugar when making. It's usually 1:1 water:sugar. I try
to avoid sugar as much as possible as there are so many great
alternatives. I prefer to use agave nectar which although is a real
sugar and has similar properties to many sugars its glycemic index is
much lower which makes it less likely to raise blood sugar levels.
Agave is 40% sweeter than sugar so you also use less.

1 12 oz. bag cranberries
2/3 cup water
2/3 cup agave or honey
1 tbsp. fresh ginger - chopped
1 med. orange - zested
Place
all above into sauce pan and bring to a boil. Once the cranberries
start popping reduce the heat and stir until blended, 10 mins. approx.
Taste for sweetness (add more agave if needed) and refrigerate. This
can be made a day or so in advance and keeps for a few weeks in an airtight container in the fridge.
Yields 3 cups.

I am thankful for all of your support!! Have a safe and healthy Thanksgiving!

Cheers!
Gav

HIDDEN CALORIES

Hey guys,
I wanted to take a minute to welcome all of you to my
newsletter and say thanks for subscribing. I've been MIA for a little while, working hard on my first eCookbook.
Now that it's done, it's back to business!
Today I thought I'd talk about eating out, especially since the holidays are approaching and since we're working on staying healthy. The Missus and I were caught at the mall last weekend with the tummy rumbling. We chose a restaurant that looked healthy enough and ordered away. I ordered the veg soup and the organic chicken platter with special potatoes and veg. The Missus ordered butternut squash soup and blackened Ahi tacos with black beans and rice. Sounds pretty good, right? Here's the thing though, I asked a ton of questions, the Missus didn't. I asked about the 'special' pots, which had cream and butter in 'em. Our server said they did offer another potato side that just used oil but sadly these turned out to be dunked in the deep fryer so they were a no go for me. Had I known they were deep fried I would've ordered double veg. On to the Missus' order, which was full of hidden calories. The butternut squash soup, which sounds healthy, was full of cream. The tacos were fine but the the black beans were refried beans, (not wasn't mentioned on the menu) and are usually full of butter or lard, and they were topped with cheese. Double whammy, which turned out to be a pretty disappointing dinner when you're trying to stick to your guns. This experience reminded us of a very important lesson: Don't just rely on the menu--ask your server for more information. You have the right to ask questions and most likely the restaurant has alternatives and are happy to accommodate. Here are some tips that will help you beat those hidden calories:
1. Now that we're in soup season, ask if they are made with dairy (cream or butter). Vegetarian/vegan soups are a great option as they are usually made with healthier stocks.
2. Ask about the sides. Is there sauce or cheese on the vegetables, beans or potatoes? Most restaurants can make simply steamed sides, though it's up to you to request it.
3. Always order the salad dressings on the side. Then you have control of how much you use, saving you lots of cals.

Luckily restaurants are starting to wise up to us healthy eaters and many are offering better choices. As long as you're not afraid to ask questions you should be golden anywhere.
Cheers!
Gav

WHAT CAN GAVAN DO FOR YOU?

BREAKING NEWS and YOU'VE GOT IT FIRST!

Sounds important, doesn't it? Thought it would get your attention, but actually it IS exciting news--The Healthy Irishman is re-branding! After many months of research and deliberation, we'll be switching over to GavanMurphy.com in the near future. Not to worry, The Healthy Irishman will still exist, though we'll be using it as our tag line.

With this new branding in mind, we need your help. Since you are a subscriber, your opinion is crucial to our branding ideas so we're asking for a few moments of your time. We've created a quick anonymous survey, which will help us define our target audience. Short, honest, snappy phrases that are specific will do just fine, and there's only 8 questions so it won't take up your day! I know surveys can be a pain but I'd really appreciate your participation and want to thank you for your support!!

So this is it, we're at the end of Spice Month! How did you get on?
I'll admit my favourite week was Turmeric week (last week). Only because I learned new recipes myself and had a great time testing them out! Any of you guys made the okra yet? The business!
This week the votes were tied for both Coriander and Cumin. I actually use cumin in many dishes so tomorrow we'll post a wrap up of all the spices with recipes to boot so you can see how versatile they can be.
Thanks to everyone who voted! I hope you learned something new like I did--And keep nudging me if I didn't get to your spice!
Next week we'll be posting recipes in honor of Labor Day (and the long weekend!) so be sure to check in!

Hey ,

Just a quick little email to let you know what I've been working on for this week.

Firstly, I went a bit mad testing recipes for Turmeric week, which means I've got more than one up my sleeve! Today's post is Spiced Bindi, more commonly known as Okra. Later in the week I'll be posting Spiced New Potatoes with Arugula and a Quinoa and veg recipe. I have to say, I've had a brilliant time trying out these new ideas--and believe it, I've even got one that didn't turn out so great. Just goes to show that being a pro doesn't mean I know everything. Perhaps you'll be able to help remedy my recipe!

Secondly, tomorrow wraps up Summer Fest and the theme of the day is Tomatoes. I decided to go an unexpected route and make my own ketchup--3 different kinds in fact! Say goodbye to sugar-filled store bought brands and hello to fresh homemade ketchup.

We've still got another week left in Spice month with Corriander leading the way. Have you voted?

Thanks for making Spice month a smashing success and a big thanks for all your support.

Cheers!
Gav
