      Culture Clubs

Great cultures don't happen by accident. In order to ensure Google's culture remains top of mind and strong throughout its entire organization, Google has created a global network of Culture Clubs - teams of local volunteers that help maintain their culture in more than 70 offices worldwide. Each Culture Club gets a small budget and they are encouraged to stay connected to the rest of Google, promote their culture, and make sure it is kept front and center in everything they do, with a particular focus on encouraging more fun at work and more honest discussions.

Even if you don't have a global empire like Google, creating local culture clubs in different buildings or even different floors in your office could be an effective way to keep everyone connected and keep culture top of mind in your company.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

I'm a huge fan of daily team huddles: quick (5-7 minutes) touch points where team members check in with each other. Hundreds of organizations rave about the benefit of daily team huddles. Here's a daily team huddle approach with a twist: assign a different theme to each daily huddle. So Monday becomes the "Top-3 priorities of the week." Tuesday might be Terrific Tuesdays where everyone shares one piece of good news OR succinctly recognizes someone. Wednesday everyone might share one challenge they need help getting over the hump with (you're not solving the challenge in the huddle - just flagging it). Thursdays could be "bring-a-joke day" where everyone shares a quick clean joke while Friday could be celebration day where everyone highlights their #1 success of the week.

Once again proving that almost anything can be turned into a fun contest, every year there is a prize for the "Oddest Book Title." Some of the 2016 shortlisted book titles in the Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title include:
  • Soviet Bus Stops (a photo collection of, yup, Soviet bus stops)
  • Behind the Binoculars: Interviews with Acclaimed Birdwatchers
  • Reading the Liver: Papyrological Texts on Ancient Greek Extispicy
  • Transvestite Vampire Biker Nuns from Outer Space: A Consideration of Cult Film
