      Smartening Up With Humor

Another pomegranate-infused edition of random workplace ideas and musings...
  • Four Seasons Hotels hold "flitch meetings" at the start of each day with all department leads, where they collectively brainstorm ways to wow a customer after a problem has occurred.
  • Look for creative ways to reframe struggling areas of your business: During the 1980s American Airlines was losing money on their night flights, until they changed their name from "red-eyes" to "Midnight Specials" and served champagne and snacks to turn them into a more festive atmosphere.
  • Researchers in Austria found that people who appreciate and generate humor have higher IQs than people who are less funny. Their analysis showed that funny people have higher verbal and nonverbal intelligence and they score lower in mood disturbance and aggressiveness.
  • You probably recognize the importance of collecting customers' testimonials but what about your employees' testimonials? AFA JCDecaux includes employees' testimonials raving about their workplace culture in their newsletters - the testimonials reinforce the need to walk the talk when it comes to their phenomenal culture.
  • A quirky but useful fact: Studies suggest that when you communicate using lists (either written or verbally) people remember your messages easier, especially when the list is 3, 5, or 7 items long.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

If you want to increase awareness of everyone's pet peeves at work, hold a "What's Your Beef?" theme day where everyone wears a name tag with their #1 pet peeve written on it. It's a simple, fun, and safe way to raise some issues at work and start some great conversations - as long as you don't write "Bob" as your #1 pet peeve!

"Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip." Source unknown.

    It's a Wacky World

It's never a good business practice to laugh at your customers, but collecting funny customer questions is a simple way to add some behind-the-scenes humor. Here are some funny questions travel agents have received:
  • Are there icebergs in the Caribbean?
  • Can I book a rental car to drive to Australia?
  • Do I have to use my own name on my airplane ticket?
  • What time does the 3:00 p.m. ferry leave?
  • Are kids allowed at the adults-only resort?
