      What Made You Laugh Today?

It's time for another papaya-infused edition of random musings and ideas...

  • One of my clients allots employees two hours per week to help another team in their workplace. Employees love the variety and it's a great way for employees to find out more about their company and teammates.
  • Here's a great tradition to start at home with your family: Ask everyone at your dinner table this simple question, "What made you laugh today?"
  • Create a Heritage Wall in your workplace to honor your history. A Nike store in Eugene, Oregon has a Heritage Wall that includes the shoe molds their founder made from a waffle iron and the first pair of Nike running shoes to cross a finish line.
  • Build a sense of community in your workplace by encouraging everyone to read the same thought-provoking business book at the same time.
  • A simple, scientifically proven way to be happier at work: Take five minutes at the end of each day to write down the three best things about your day and then review your journal at the end of each week, and for even greater impact have everyone on your team share their list in a quick team huddle.

Create a "buzzword jar" at work to encourage more straightforward language. Whenever someone uses an overused acronym or buzzword that drives everyone crazy, the person has to put a quarter or dollar into the jar. You can create a list of 10 "jar-worthy words" or have a word/acronym of the week or month. The proceeds can go towards donuts, your social committee, or a favorite charity.

Proof yet again that anything can be turned into a contest: Odor-Eaters has held a stinkiest sneakers contest for 43 years. The contest is open to children aged 5-15. The sneakers are judged on their condition and odor by a panel of sneaker-sniffers (and what an awesome job that must be), as well as each child's description as to why their sneakers are the smelliest. In addition to a two-night stay on Broadway and $2,500, the winner receives the coveted "Golden Sneaker" trophy, a spot in the "Hall of Fumes," and a much-needed supply of Odor-Eaters.
