You may not have noticed but all those espresso machines make a lot of noise. There are barristas shouting. People saying their orders. In every corner of the room, people are deep in conversation. That's why I chose Starbucks today for my morning meditation. I sat down with my order. Even my kids know how to say it. Decaf grande non fat no whip mocha. If you say it in that order, it makes it easier for them (they once explained to me). Fortunately, there's a vacant table and I sit down and... do nothing. First, I spend some time winding down and just breathing and smelling. Sometimes we move so quickly, we don't pay attention to the world around us. I know. I was a type-A personality. Now thanks to yoga, I'm an A-. I lean over and smell the coffee. The strong espresso smell mixes with the mocha. Heavenly. And I begin to feel gratitude for Starbucks for providing a place where I can sit quietly with my thoughts. And I feel gratitude for the barristas who are harried by people who want to grab their coffee and go and yet manage to be so friendly. And in particular for the barrista who made my coffee. It smells real good. I pick up the coffee and feel its warmth through the cup and the cup holder. And then I take a drop of coffee into my mouth and allow its taste to spread. I close my eyes and think of all the places I've had coffee like this one. Wonderful memories. And breathing in and out slowly, I allow all the noises of Starbucks to fade into the background. It's just me and my coffee. And I'm sipping it S...L...O...W...L...Y and enjoying every drop. I'm paying attention to my breathing too. There are no sounds around me. The sounds in my head quiet too. It's just the coffee and me. And I'm trying to get rid of me. So it can be just the coffee. I've lost track of time. My return from my coffee meditation. The coffee is cool now to the taste. Responses ranged from no one should judge him (well excuse me, that's the jury's JOB) to he was an ego maniac. Many people who trained with him shared they thought he was only in it for the money. Here are some of the quotes I received: This one if from someone who is a fan of Bob Proctor: Bob Proctor, a self-help leader and longtime friend of James Arthur Ray, said although he did not support the sweat-lodge retreat, he would have liked to see Ray vindicated. Anybody had the right to leave there (the sweat lodge), and they didn't. Some did, Proctor said. It was a tragic thing that happened, but I don't think (Ray) should be the one that's held responsible. He's not a bad guy. He's been portrayed as something that he's not. He's actually helped a lot of people. This person was outraged that James Ray is conducting business as usual: I agree with you. Take responsibility. He showed no remorse for the people who lost their lives by continuing afterwards business as usual. Thank you for sending this. I received this from someone who participated in sweat lodges: So when I read about the atrocious behavior of James Ray and his utter lack of care, or willingness to take responsibility for the death of those folks in his sweat lodge, I was horrified, because I remember how those events above described were free of any threat of harm. A local Shaman always watched over and participated in the groups sitting in sweat lodges. After reading the accounts of the deaths of people at James Ray's sweatlodges, I was reminded that no one EVER covered the lodge with plastic or any sort of covering. As indicated above, the Indian shamans who oversaw those lodges and dream journeys that I attended knew better. Helpers were always in attendance and drinking water was at your side either in bottles or jugs. You were free to leave if the heat or whatever began to overcome your physical or psychological tolerances. One of the things I so appreciate about your work with the public is your commitment to integrity. For me, that is my bottom line. I appreciate the fact that you always stress the value of Integrity in your webinars, marketing emails, and your (where have they been recently?) wonderful spiritual teachings that I value so much. As a deeply spiritual person, I hunger for the truths that you have taught from your own deeply spiritual wellspring. This woman kept hearing from James Ray and was revolted: I used to receive James Ray's emails many years ago but when that fateful tragedy happened and after watching a documentary about it i decided to stop my ties with him. He kept on sending emails as if i had not unsubscribed. It was revolting . I kept deleting them as if it was the devil ( i don't believe in such stuff ) was knocking at my door. Thank God now that's stopped. It's weird that Bob Proctor would still affilliate himself with J Ray. There's something wrong there. A seminar organizer commented: I have sweated in a lodge(not with Ray). Been through seminar business from both sides. Changing your life can be like being re-born. During birth the mother is in quite a bit of pain(damn near killed my wife giving birth to my son) Yet the doctor was detached from her suffering. Mr. Ray violated the law on a number of fronts.(not just the deaths which are regrettable) Was the release not worded strong enough? Adults get to make stupid choices, or do we? It is a sad day, not just for Personal Change but for Responsibility. This woman was upset by Ray's attitude during the trial. You are the first person, at least in the emails I've received, to comment on the outcome of this outrageous situation, and I wanted to thank you for doing so. Ever since this totally avoidable tragedy occurred, I was outraged. I have always believed in the presumption of innocence, HOWEVER, Mr. Ray was his own worst enemy throughout the investigation, and it appears the trial. Assigning blame on the victims, an irregularity in the wood, etc., borders on the perverse for one who preached personal accountability. This became even more infuriating when photographs were shown of the cramped accommodations, for which these people were charged outrageously, and the lack of any real medical supervision. Many Native Americans, who are the pioneers of sweat lodge rituals weighed in on the recklessness. I, too, was even more outraged by those who rallied around Mr. Ray. I was not surprised, however, as we are living through a time in America, and globally, where accountability has taken a back seat to greed. One would think that Mr. Ray would have been suspended from promoting his own products/programs, and certainly be discouraged from endorsing those of others. I cannot tell you how many people have sent emails, endorsing Mr. Proctor's newest program, in which, one is led to believe he is revealing yet another piece to his cosmic puzzle. Sorry, if that sounded harsh, but it just seems to be a constant recycling of the same information, or on a more insidious level, disseminating information on a need to know basis, to borrow a line from the 60's, in order to further profit from the same material. It's just my opinion, but I don't think a technicality will work with respect to Mr. Ray's case. This type of case is, historically, very difficult to be heard on appeal, no less overturned, especially when he could have been charged more severely than negligent homicide. In closing, it is sad day for personal change. However, your comment, Keep it ethical, couldn't be more timely. All in all hundreds of people shared their thoughts with me. Secret star James Ray was convicted yesterday in the Sweat lodge trial in Arizona. Ray was found guilty of 3 counts of negligent homicide in the deaths of 3 participants in the fire ceremony in 2009. Ray's attorneys repeatedly sought to blame someone else. Maybe it was a chemical in the wood used to start the fire. Maybe it was the people who built the fire. Maybe it was the fault of the people who died. Kind of odd for one of the people who taught personal responsibility to try to get out of it. The trial is not totally over. The jury is deciding whether their were any aggravating circumstances in the case. For example, was Ray totally unconcerned with the peoples' suffering during the event. These people paid $10,000 each to participate in this ceremony. While it's truly shocking and disgusting that someone who was at the highest elements of the self improvement niche could behave in such a manner, what's worse is those who rallied around him and supported him AFTER the sweat lodge events. Ray proceeded to market himself and his programs after the sweat lodge event until Bob Proctor allegedly advised him to allow things to cool down. When he felt enough time had passed, James Ray was back marketing himself and others. The last email I received from him on his list was pushing Bob Proctor's new program. Kinda makes you wonder why anyone would want James Ray pushing their program. Again, it's likely with the amount of money he has, James Ray will appeal some technicality with the law but right now, he's a convicted triple murderer. And it's truly a sad day for personal change. People said, Harlan, you're a Rabbi. How can you publish this? Or they tell me, Harlan, the Bible warns about witchcraft. Indeed it does. It also says that witches should be burned. But I'm not sure the Bible is talking about the practices that Aurora and her family do. The witches in the Bible used Black Magic and contacted the Dead. Aurora and her family believe in God and that God and nature are tightly connected. She doesn't communicate with the dead, use Black Magic, or do any of the things the Bible warned about. Instead, she and her family believe in worshiping God and nature. Yes, they are a little bit different. And originally I did NOT intend to publish her product. But I discovered just how powerful Aurora's take on the Law of Attraction is. I'd never ask anyone to compromise their own religious values. But I'm sure if you spoke with her, you might discover what she does is NOT what the Bible is talking about. The word for witch in Hebrew is Machshefa - it means sorceress. What Aurora does has not connection with this. But so far I've gotten really good feedback from the people who've been using it for a while. The more I learned, the more upset I became. But as she explained herself, it began to make sense. It wasn't about ASKING the Universe, it was about tapping in to the POWER of the Universe. It was about using your inner powers - the ones you aren't even aware of - and forcing the Universe to fulfill your every command. I declined because I generally focus on my own products. But this woman was persistent and she talked Sandra into getting me on the phone. And then she told me her idea. I said no way would I EVER publish or promote a product like that. And I hung up the phone. So she called back and told me I was close minded and ignorant. And she proceeded to explain herself to me. I listened and politely declined to publish her product. Then she came to my office one day and sat down to explain herself to me. I have to admit, she was persuasive. She kept up the barrage. She introduced me to her mother and her grandmother who have all been using the Law of Attraction their way for years. But then I said, if I publish this, I'll offend A LOT of people. And the Grandmother said, Just like your mind opened, other peoples' minds can open as well. So I agreed to publish the product but I haven't told you about it. I haven't shared about it. I let just a few people know about it and then sat back and... I was blown away by the results. Now I know this product will offend a lot of people. And I apologize for that in advance. And the big news is: NO More Simon Cowell! It's hard to imagine American Idol without Simon telling all the contestants that they suck. This season, it's all about the support and coaching they'll get from new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. J. Lo has said, We're not here to break people down, but to help them move through it. And the executive producer has said that the changes were made in order to help the contestants go into the competition with confidence and pride in themselves. So is the new and improved feel-good American Idol going to gain back the ratings lost in recent years? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure. The warm and fuzzy version will have a lot less drama and tears than before. So what do you think will happen this season? Do you think that the new judges will do a good job? Or are you going to miss Simon's mean and nasty comments? Believe it or not, this is an important question.
