Tip of the Week- Little Bits of Perfection and Perfect Customer Experiences

Mabuhay!

Mabuhay! is a traditional greeting meaning long live in the
Philippines, where I recently delivered my keynote speech on The Power
of Social Media* to the Philippine
Travel Exchange (Phitex) conference in Manila.

Mabuhay is
part of the welcoming spirit evidenced throughout the Philippines and I
wanted to give you some tips from my recent trip which may help instill
a little of this spirit in your business or website. I'm
going to phrase the tips as questions for you to consider and hopefully
act on.

Little Bits of Perfection and Perfect Customer
Experiences
After having a great massage in
the Philippines, it occurred to me that every little
bit of perfection adds up to one whole perfect experience.
 So for my massage, each perfect part of the massage
contributed to one entire wholly satisfying perfect massage experience.
Question: Are there
little bits of perfection in your business or site that
people are attracted to, or desire? If so, cultivate them.

As
Milind Lele said in his book Monopoly
Rules, finding the
situational monopoly
in your own business gives you a monopoly.

His
example of this is popcorn in a movie theater: When you go to a movie
theater and buy the popcorn there it could cost $5-10 dollars,
but if you just bought the loose uncooked popcorn kernels the cost
might just be $0.75.

The reason we pay more
for popcorn at the movies is that the theater has a
situational monopoly. The theater has the great
tasting popcorn we want, at the place we need it (which they
control), and which we can't have otherwise (unless you smuggled in
your own popcorn - yikes!).
Question: What part of
your business do you have a situational monopoly in?

Merging this idea with the massage I mentioned:

Question: What part of
your business could deliver a little bit of perfection (contributing
to a great overall customer experience), which your business also has a
situational monopoly in (exactly what people want, when they need it,
which you have control over)?
- Answer this, and
you've really got something!
Reason:
Because in the theater example above, they can make stale popcorn and
get away with it (monopoly), but if they made great tasting (possibly
even gourmet) popcorn, it'd be even better (great customer experience,
leaving them craving to come back and have more in the future).

~~~~~~
Expert Advice
There's nothing like getting just the advice you need, when you need it.
For my keynote speech I needed a barong (traditional Filipino dress
shirt) and to wear a barong properly you need a nice white undershirt.
To get the shirt and undershirt, we went to a local Filipino department
store in Manila called SM (ShoeMart).
What we were greeted with was phenomenal customer service as well as
expert advice.
My wife and her family selected the barong (see photo) which I
tried on to assure a good fit. But for the undershirt, which you can't
try on, we had to rely on the expertise of the salesclerk.
Link to photo: http://bit.ly/ngFhvg
We needed to
find the right size so the clerk eyeballed me and selected an
undershirt and then held it up to my back and shoulders and said with
great certainty that this was the right size.  Sure enough,
when we got back to our room and I tried on the shirt it fit
perfectly.
Question: What parts of
your business or site can you help customers make decisions on, so they
can purchase with confidence?
~~~~~~

Specialization and Expertise
This expertise is exhibited throughout the SM stores. Since
labor is relatively inexpensive, each aisle of the store is staffed by
a salesclerk.

As we walked through the store we were greeted with
Hello Sir, Ma'am (which is pronounced Hello Sir, Mom in Manila).
This was nice because in every section we shopped at the sales
personnel were very helpful, knowledgeable, and personable.
The possible
downsides of this might be:

1) If you walk through the store quickly, you're seemingly barraged by
never-ending Hello
Sir, Mom's every time you pass an aisle.
- And if you think these greetings are an anomaly, then just know that
in SM's competitor, Landmark, you're greeted with Hi Mom, Sir (or
something similar) at every turn.

Contrast this with many stores in the US, where you're greeted as you
enter the store and that's pretty much it, unless you look like you
need help or you want to buy something. Of course, we all know of
stores where it's almost impossible to find a salesperson to help you,
or at least not when and where you need them.

2) Since the salesclerks are compartmentalized they don't necessarily
know detailed information about all of the other areas of the store.
 So if you ask a question about where something else is, it's
not assured that they'll know exactly where it is, but they'll
certainly try to help you.
Question: Are there any
areas of your
business or site where additional expertise and helpfulness could
enhance the overall customer experience?
Question: Are there any
areas where sales practices could be
reviewed or changed to assure an overall positive customer experience?

~~~~~~
Way more than shoes: SM (ShoeMart)
Link to video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UL_weqiJpEg
And just in case you're wondering about a store which started out being
called ShoeMart and specializing in shoes:
Well, they rebranded as SM and they just finished building the SMX
Convention Center which I gave my keynote speech in.
The SMX Convention Center is connected by a walkway to the SM Mall of
Asia, which is the 3rd largest mall in...the World!
 The first and second largest malls are in...China.
To give you some perspective, Mall of America (the
largest mall in the United States) is #13!  Three other SM
malls in the Philippines are higher on the list (not including the SM
mall of Asia).
Also SM has a really upbeat video. Does your business have that?
And notice that they're suggesting: Come on in, look at what we got
-
a great call to action.
Even on their webpage, SM conveys their
spirit of optimism and helpfulness:
Through the opening of new
stores, renovations of major stores, and the introduction of new
merchandising concepts, SM continues to make shopping at its department
store chain an exciting lifestyle experience.
Question: Are you using
calls to action with your customers (or prospective customers)?
Question: Do you have a
YouTube video which could help promote your store and the spirit of
your company?
Question: Is your
company's mission reflected, articulated, and practiced in all areas of
your business?
~~~~~~

Shopping Science
And if you think this shopping stuff is all fun and games, think
again...it's a science.
Paco Underhill is the consummate
shopping expert and he's literally written the books in this field: Why
We Buy: The Science of Shopping; Call
of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping; and most
recently What
Women Want: The Science of Female Shopping.
 I highly recommend his books to get many amazing insights
into how and why we buy.
That said, Happy
Shopping! to you, yours...and your customers!

Best success in your business, career, and life,

Rick and Karl

Tip of the Week- How to Get Contact Information and Build Trust at the Same Time

Whether online or offline, you usually have to connect with your
prospect several times to make a sale, so you need to get their contact
information. The reason you need to connect several times is to
deepen the relationship and build trust.

Offer something valuable for free
The
best way to get that information is to offer something of value for
free- a report, e-book, e-newsletter, mini-course, light version of
your software, videos, audio files, or some other freemium.
It
doesn't have to be long or involved, or give away all of your secrets,
but it does need to be informative and helpful enough that they can put
the information to use right away.

This serves three purposes:

It establishes that you know what you're talking about.

It
leads them to the conclusion that if this is the quality of
information ABC Company is willing to give me for free, then the
information that I pay for must be incredible.

It builds trust.
No sales pitches
Whatever
you offer, it can not be a sales pitch for your company's products or
services. It must be valuable, helpful information that they can use
right away, whether or not they purchase from you. Of course, your
contact information will appear at the beginning or end of the report
(better at the end).
The reason for this is that 1) it
establishes you as an authority in the area (if the content is high
quality); and 2) it builds trust. The fact that you're giving
away something that can help, without asking for anything in return,
says that you're someone they can trust.
The default position
of most customers and prospects is to distrust your company. Fewer than
one in three people trust marketing messages according to the 2010 Edelman Trust Barometer Executive Summary (PDF download). The study also found that trusting companies is more important than delivering great products and services.

3-for-1 Proposition
Offering, free, high-quality, content is really a 3-for-1 proposition.:

You get their contact information.

It establishes you as an authority in your field.

It builds trust.

Best success in your business, career, and life,

Rick and Karl

Tip of the Week- How to Conduct a Simple Usability Test

If you really want to see things from your customer's perspective conduct a simple usability test.
Here's how:

Pay
4 or 5 users for an hour of their time and ask them to perform typical
tasks on your website such as: 1) search for something; 2) make a
purchase; 3) register; or 4) whatever other key things customers might
do.

Create a list of questions that lead them to the
tasks, but no to the how to's. Examples: Find how many colors and
what sizes the xyz jeans come in, or Create an account.

Schedule
one user at a time and don't tell them anything about the site
beforehand. Let them know they aren't being tested, the website is, and
there aren't any wrong answers. Encourage them to comment out loud as
they go through your site. You want to know the good, the bad, and the
ugly.

Record the experience from their actual
viewpoint. Use a camcorder, software, or web-based conference site that
allows you to view and record what's on your user's computer desktop.

Note how long it takes to complete each task. Write down any suggestions or complaints as they comment out loud.

When it's over, ask them what they liked, or didn't like about the site. Get their suggestions for improvement.

If
they are common issues between all of the participants, fix these areas
right away. Once you've made the fixes, it's time for the next round of
testing with different users.
No matter how easy, simple,
or intuitive you think your website is, if your customers don't see it
that way, then it isn't and that's all that matters.

Best success in your business, career, and life,

Rick and Karl

Tip of the Week- Straight From Google- 23 Ways to Rank Higher

By the end of this year, Google will have rolled out around 500 search
improvements just in the previous twelve months alone. A lot
of you may think that Google is purposely making it more and more
difficult for anyone to rank on the first page of results, and you're
right.

Why is Google making it
harder to rank high?

But why is Google doing that? Is it because it's the 800 lb. gorilla
and it can or is there another more important reason that can benefit
all of us?

Think of Google like a magazine. If it can't attract searchers
(readers), then it won't attract advertisers either and it's not going
to last. It's primary competitors are Bing and Yahoo. The only way it
can stay ahead of the other search engines is to return the most
relevant and high-quality results possible to the searchers.
 Isn't that what we want when we're the searchers, to find the
most meaningful results for our queries?

23 Ways to Rank Higher

Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow, wrote a post on the Google Webmaster
Central Blog on May 6, 2011, entitled More Guidance on Building High-Quality Sites.
In that post he describes the sort of questions that the search team at
Google asks itself as they write algorithms attempting to assess site
quality. It's their attempt to look at things from their customer's
perspective, a point we try to hammer home here at IncreaseOnlineProfits.com.
Here are the questions:

Would you trust the information presented in this article?

Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who
knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?

Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant
articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword
variations?

Would you be comfortable giving your credit card
information to this site?

Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual
errors?

Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of
the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what
might rank well in search engines?

Does the article provide original content or information
original reporting, original research, or original analysis?

Does the page provide substantial value when compared to
other pages in search results?

How much quality control is done on content?

Does the article describe both sides of a story?

Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?

Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large
number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that
individual pages or sites don't get as much attention or care?

Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or
hastily produced?

For a health related query, would you trust the information
from this site?

Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source
when mentioned by name?

Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive
description of the topic?

Does this article contain insightful analysis or
interesting information that is beyond obvious?

Is this the sort of page you'd want to bookmark, share with
a friend, or recommend?

Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that
distract from or interfere with the main content?

Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine,
encyclopedia, or book?

Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking
in helpful specifics?

Are the pages produced with great care and attention to
detail vs. less attention to detail?

Would users complain when they see pages from this site?
Use these 23 questions as guidance not only to see things from Google's
point of view and increase your ranking, but more importantly as a way
to ensure a high-quality, positive experience for your visitor or
customer.

Best success in your business, career, and life,

Rick and Karl

Tip of the Week- Marketing White Belt- Basics For the Digital Marketer

Recently I finished reading Christopher S. Penn's great ebook primer on
marketing called: Marketing White Belt: Basics For the Digital
Marketer.

You might recall from earlier newsletters that @cspenn
is one of the highly recommended Marketing Over Coffee podcast
co-hosts, an email marketing guru at WhatCounts (since Blue
Sky Factory
was acquired), not to mention being an adjunct professor of Internet
marketing at the University of San Francisco, as well as the school's
lead subject matter expert on advanced social media. *
* http://www.marketingprofsu.com/instructors/9916/christopher-penn

As a person who has taught various courses in marketing at UCLA
Extension since 2003, I can definitely say that there's something of
value in this book for everyone and that anyone can profit by reading
it (literally).

The book is modeled on a martial arts example, with the white belt
being the first belt one earns, and which can lead to many other higher
levels. But that said, this book delivers nuggets of
information which marketers at any level can put to use and benefit
from. Whether you just want to be more grounded quickly in basic
tried-and-true marketing concepts or just be reminded of them, this
book leads you through them in a very organized way and showers you
with insider insights along your journey.

At the end of every chapter there are thought-provoking and practical
exercises to further your learning, and more importantly, your
real-life marketing efforts.

Everything (all
things marketing) the book includes:

Basic Business Models for Making Money (After all what's the point, if
you're not?)
Marketing strategy and goals (Got
goals?)
The 4 Ps of Marketing (Product,
Price, Place and Promotion: Ok,
you've heard of them, now find out what they really are and why they're
important)
Science: Testing (Who
is your audience?, etc.)
Marketing Funnels (Prospects,
Leads, Customers, Evangelists - got 'em?...want 'em?)
SWOT Analysis (Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats and internal vs. external
factors...worth
the price of the book right there!)
Marketing ROI (Return
on Investment: What it really
is and how to really
calculate it...with real examples)
Basic Marketing Campaign Plan (How
to do it simply and what to watch out for - yikes!)
Fast, Cheap, Good (Got
'em all? Want 'em all?)
Marketing Spirit (Keep
it up, your spirit that is)
Path to Success (And
who among us doesn't need and crave that?)
Etc.
Ok, I won't lie to you, this isn't the most thrilling read you'll find
over the summer (compared to Game
of Thrones), but it's sure to be one of the most valuable.

And this is a good thing since Chris just gives you the info you need
and gives it to you straight with some stellar insights as well.

Later when you want to tap his amazing sense of humor, then check out
his Out of Date Newsletter or any Marketing
Over Coffee podcast to be instantly amused and enlightened
about everything marketing (email marketing, social media, analytics,
etc).

FYI, this is currently an ebook only (no print version) book, which I
loved reading using the Amazon Kindle app on my Android phone.

How to Get It(Chris's links to his
ebook):

Buy
a copy now for the Amazon Kindle platform!
No Kindle? No problem! Get
a free reading app for the Mac, PC, Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry,
and many other devices now!
Prefer to buy for the Nook at BandN
instead? I've got you covered. Buy
a copy now for the Nook!

Bottom Line
I highly recommend this book as I think it's a quick and easy
way to get some of the most useful basic marketing knowledge you'll
need to become a successful marketer.

 of the Week- Considering Google's Page Speed Service

Tip of the Week- Considering Google's Page Speed Service

Last week, Google announced it's latest tool for your website, Page Speed Service. Google is obsessed with speed, and PSS is an online service that helps automatically speed up the loading of your web pages.

How does it work?
According to it's website, Page
Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by
applying web performance best practices and serves them to end users
via Google's servers across the globe.
It goes on to say that
how much faster your pages will load is dependent on a lot of factors,
such as your content, geographic location of access, bandwidth, etc.
However, you can run before and after tests here and measure the exact speed for your site on different browsers and networks. Google's Page Speed Service Gallery documents improved times of as much as 20%-60% faster.

Why is page speed important to you?
The
primary reason it should be important to you is that page speed (how
quickly your pages load) is important to Google. In fact, how quickly
your web pages load is now part of Google's algorithm for page ranking.
How large of a factor is unknown, but I've read accounts showing that
it has made a big difference in rankings once the load time is improved.
Another
reason it should be important to you is your customers. None of us, and
I'm including you as well, likes to wait for a website to load, do we?
How many times have you clicked away rather than wait?
The fact
is, the more quickly your pages load, the more likely it is that users
are going to hang around and check out your website and possibly become
customers. Don't we all want our users to have a better experience on
our websites?
Another reason it should be important is that Google is offering this service for free (right now). You just have to sign up.

Having said all that...
Before
you decide to use Page Speed Service, ask yourself, if you really want
to turn over your website to Google, especially your customer's private
data. I trust Google, no question about that, but sometimes things
don't work quite the way they should, especially during the roll out of
a new feature. It may be more prudent to wait, even if they start
charging. You can always use an SEO company to help reduce your page
load times.
In some cases, the now optimized web page actually
took longer to load than the original page. This usually happened in
cases where the website had already been optimized for page loading.
The
way I look at it is this: if you're not sensitive to giving Google
control, and you're not worried about privacy issues, it's probably a
good thing to use the service (at least run the comparison tests).
What
I find amusing, is that to me, Google is basically saying 1) loading
times are important; 2) we've built that factor into our algorithm; 3)
your page ranking will increase with optimized pages; 4) you'll either
have to pay us or someone else to optimize your pages; and 5) since
we're the 800 lb. gorilla, you really don't have a choice.
Wouldn't you love to be in that position? Set your own rules and have everyone follow them, because they all need your service.

Best success in your business, career, and life,

Karl and Rick

Tip of the Week- Sexy Headlines Boost Clicks - How to Make Your Headlines Irresistible

It's one thing to write incredibly valuable content, but it's another
thing to get people to it, let alone read it.

The easiest way to get people to your content (article, blog
post, e-Newsletter) is to have an irresistible headline
or subject line (for email).

Examples:
Yahoo
CNN
Headlines (app) provides examples of
excellent headlines:
Pulse News (app) is
a master of whetting
your appetite and making you click:
How-to
Synopses of Sexy Headline Writing
Resources
for Sexy Headline Writing
One trick I use is to jot down a working headline when I start an
article. Then while I'm writing the article (or post, or email) I'll
adjust the headline. As I craft and hone the post, the
headline changes until a final one emerges.

The second trick is to write a teaser for the headline and then
decide whether the teaser (or part of it) is a better headline than the
original.
- A teaser is just a brief synopsis, maybe 1 or
2 sentences long, meant to entice someone enough to click on
an article title.

I'll give you a synopsis of the how-to of this as well as some
resources below.

But first, let's take a look at some examples.

First and foremost, there's Yahoo. The people at Yahoo are
masters at crafting amazingly attractive headlines. You might not
appreciate this until look at the before and after headlines.
 In this case, I'm going to list the after (final teaser)
headline first, followed by the before (actual original) headline.
Examples
Yahoo
I love Yahoo headlines, because as I view or scroll through them I feel
like clicking on many of them, which tells me they're very good:

Surprising
facts about dreams (teaser headline)

   6 Dream Mysteries--Solved (actual
headline)
- Who doesn't want to be surprised...about dreams (we all do, right?)
- Who dreams (everyone), so who might open this (everyone!)
Outdated
career advice to ignore (teaser headline)

Ignore These 10 Outdated Pieces of Career Advice (actual
headline)
- Know any job-seekers (or persons helping job-seekers) who could
ignore opening this advice?
Cool
add-ons for smartphones (teaser headline)
     Upgrade Your
Life: Must-have smartphone add-ons (actual headline)
- The cool factor applied to...(anything, but in this case...)
add-ons for smartphones
How
to read a credit report (teaser headline)

   6 Items to Review on Your Credit Report
(actual headline)
- Haven't you always wanted to know how to really read a credit report?
Dirty word Obama avoided (teaser
headline)
     As Washington
struggles over debt crisis, Obama stays mum on veto threat
(actual headline)
- Hint: The word is veto (not compromise as one might expect).
- The hint of a person in a position of authority using a possibly
salacious word makes this headline.
~~~~~~
Now with smartphones, headline-writers are getting even better at
grabbing our attention enough for us to take action (and click):
CNN
Headlines (app) provides examples of
excellent headlines:
'Dirty sock smell' traps mosquitoes
(teaser headline)
     'Dirty sock
smell' lures mosquitoes to a sticky end (actual headline)
- Aren't you just
intrigued enough to want to know what's going on in this article...and
why?
- Bottom line: 'Dirty
sock smell' may help eliminate malaria (which might be a good title
too!)
  - Scientists have chemically reproduced the pungent smell of
foot odor
  - The chemical mixture is four times more powerful in
attracting mosquitoes than natural odor
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/07/26/tanzania.malaria.socks/index.html
CNN
for iPhones
CNN for Android smartphones
~~~

Pulse News (app) is a master of whetting
your appetite and making you click:
http://www.pulse.me/

Wal-Mart
takes another shot at streaming... (teaser headline)
     Wal-Mart
takes another shot at streaming movies
(actual headline)
- Streaming...what? Tell
me, tell me...
Multitasking
while driving: Can technology... (teaser headline)
     Multitasking
while driving: Can technology make a car uncrashable?
(actual headline)
- What can technology do
to help me with this? Tell me, tell me...

Tip of the Week- Google Business Photos

Years
ago, I owned a rental listing service that allowed people to
conveniently look for a house, apartment, guest house or cottage to
rent.
At first, people would come into the office to pick up the weekly
list of available rentals with a detailed text description of each
unit.. As technology progressed, we were able to alert them by email or
send a message to their PDA's if a new listing matched their
requirements.
Eventually, we were able to take videos of the inside and
outside of the units and post those on our website so our customers
could see for themselves and not just rely on the text description.
Now Google is doing something similar for brick and mortar businesses. It's called Business Photos from Google.
In addition to taking photos of the exterior of you business, Google
will send its photographers (for free) to shoot panoramic photos of the
interior of your business as well. Just as you can't judge a book
by its cover, you can't judge a business by it's exterior signage or
paint color either.
This service will give prospective customers a
feel for the ambiance of your store and show them what your business is
really like. The photos will appear on your Google Places business page. You can also upload your own photos as well.
Currently,
Google is taking pictures of the types of businesses that are searched
for most regularly. These types of businesses include restaurants,
hotels, retail shops, gyms, salons, repair shops and others. They
aren't currently photographing legal, medical or big brand chain
establishments.
While they are beginning to roll out the service
all over the world, here in the United States Google is currently
taking photos in Orange County, CA; Bay Area, CA; Phoenix, AZ;
San
Antonio, TX; and St. Petersburg , FL. However, even if they're not in
your area yet, you can still upload your own photos to your Place page
by logging into or signing up for Google Places.
Here's a short video that Google put together explaining the service and how it works:

It's
another way to differentiate yourself from your competition by
showcasing your business to potential customers. As always, look at
your business and marketing from your customer's perspective, it's the
only one that really matters.

Take care and best success,

Rick and Karl

Tip of the Week- Google+, Social Media, Priorities and Time

Recently Google announced Google+, which looks intriguing.

What is Google+?
Question: Do I need
to jump into Google+, or any newest lastest social media tool right
away?
Question: How much
time should I spend on social media?
Question: Do I need
to do social media myself?
Question: Which
social media tool(s) should I use?
Question: Where do
my (prospective) customers spend their time online?
Question: How do I
know if my social media efforts are paying off?
What
is Google+?
This question may be best answered by the xkcd comic strip on Google+:

You should join Google+!
- What is it?
Not Facebook!
- What's it like?
Facebook!
- Thanks to Digital
Village podcast for this one
I
just started trying Google+ myself so I don't have any amazing personal
opinions or insights to share yet - I'm still in learning and testing
mode. And no, I'm not going to define or explain Google+
further
than the joke above at this point as you can find that info in many
other places right now (just Google it!).
- And if youre really yearning for the inside scoop you can see a brief interactive tour of Google+ here:
   http://bit.ly/p6bN60

But
it occurred to me that many people may be wondering if Google+ (or any
newest latest social media tool) is something they should be jumping
into right away.

So I thought I'd spend just a few minutes going over some basics about
Social Media and giving you my bottom lines on them.
Question: Do I need to jump into
Google+, or any newest lastest social media tool right away?Answer:
Probably not, unless you're in the field of social media and you want
to stay up-to-date with firsthand experience on cutting edge trends.
Plus you need an invitation to Google+ and you may not have one yet
anyway.

Bottom line:
- Stay informed so you can be conversational about current social media
trends.
-
If you really feel like getting some further experience with the new
tool, try it for a few minutes just to see what it's like.
Note:
This may take a few short sessions. Then decide if you think
the
new tool is right for your business and fits in with your marketing
strategy as well as where your (prospective) customers spend their time
online.

~~~
Question: How much time should I
spend on social media?Answer: It
depends on your goals and objectives. I've seen answers like: Eight
hours a week for authors seeking to promote their books.  How
many
authors do you know who would like to spend the equivalent of a full
work-day in social media, rather than writing? Probably none.
 But
if they're not Stephen King then they may need to take some time to get
more well-known and social media is a great way to do that.
Bottom line:
-
Try spending at least 5-minutes a day on social media (if you're really
limited on time and/or you're very skeptical about whether social media
can be effective for your business).
   - You could try
Twitter on Monday, Facebook on Tuesday, LinkedIn on Wednesday and then
cycle back to Twitter on Thursday (or try another social media tool
like Slideshare.net, Flickr, etc.).
- If you can swing it, then try
doing 15-minutes a day: 5-minutes for Twitter + 5-minutes for Facebook
+ 5-minutes for LinkedIn = 15-minutes.
- Concerned about holding to these time limits?
   - Then see our eNewsletter on: Time and Social Media: How to Save Time and
Boost your Efficiency on Social Media
-
Of course if you have more time and wish to spend it on social media,
then feel free to use it more as long as this fits in with the
strategic goals of your business and your marketing efforts.
~~~
Question: Do I need to do social
media myself?Answer:
Social media is all about disclosure, transparency, authenticity, and
trust. Personally I think it's hard to delegate this to another person
if you're a relatively small business. After all, who knows you (and
communicates as you) better than you? But if you're
a larger
business, then you might be able to hire an agency or consulting firm
to handle some or all of your social media efforts. Of course agencies
aren't necessarily the be-all or end-all of social media success
either.
- Thinking of just having an intern do it? Just
remember that one errant Twitter tweet, Facebook page status
update, or blog post can eliminate all of the hard-earned trust you
company spent so much time and effort trying to build up. So proceed
with caution (at your own risk) if this is your approach.
Bottom line:
-
In most cases yes, you should do social media yourself, unless you have
a trusted employee who really understands you and your business very
well. And even so, that person should probably tweet or post as
themselves and not as you, because if it's found out later that they're
not you, you'll probably lose some authenticity and trust. It's really
better to disclose that they're tweeting or posting on your behalf than
risk losing trust.
- Given this situation, see the Bottom line for How much time should I
spend on social media? above.

~~~
Question: Which social media
tool(s) should I use?
Answer:
It depends. First you need to determine the social media strategy for
your business and where it fits in with your overall marketing efforts.
Then you need to set some goals and objectives for your social media
efforts. Then you should determine which social media tool(s)
will potentially be the best and most efficient to reach these
goals, given where your prospective customers are on the web.
Bottom line:
-
Find out where your potential customers spend their time on the web and
then spend some of your social media marketing time in those areas.
  - See the next question to specifically see where
your customers spend their time online...
- Then spend some time where they are.
-
By the way, Twitter isn't new anymore. It's pretty well established
now. Using Twitter correctly can not only help you interact with your
customers (if they're there), but can also help your business be found
by people you'd never expect who may be interested in your business
and/or your insights about your industry.
- See The Power of
Twitter at:
   http://www.slideshare.net/KarlKasca/
- Other ways to have your business be found online:
  - See The
Power of Social Media at:
     http://www.slideshare.net/KarlKasca/
     - Of these tools I'd recommend Twitter,
LinkedIn and Facebook (personal and/or pages for your business).
        - These are the easiest and
most accessible social media tools.
     - Later you can consider blogging, but
this requires more time and effort.
-
Be sure to create social networking profiles, especially a Google
Profile, as your Google Profile will be the basis for Google+ if and
when you decide to try it.
And more than that, your Google Profile
is like a hub of everything you on the internet and you're pointing
Google (the largest search engine) straight to it.
So even if you don't do Google+, there are other major advantages to
having a Google Profile, for instance:
- Potentially Boosting your Search Engine Rankings With
Social Media Search Results
~~~
Question: Where do my
(prospective) customers spend their time online?
Answer:
It depends. For consumers it depends on their location,
gender,
age, etc. For businesses it depends on the size of company, category,
etc.
Bottom line:
Try Forrester's excellent online tools to get a feel for where your
customers are.
Groundswell Profile Tool (Consumer profiles):
http://www.forrester.com/empowered/tool_consumer.html
- Click Build Profile Now
- Choose Age, Country, and/or Gender from drop-down menus.

Groundswell Profile Tool (B2B* profiles):
http://www.forrester.com/empowered/tool_b2b.html
* Business-to-business business technology buyers

How does this work and what does it mean?
http://www.forrester.com/empowered/ladder2010
- See
this short presentation to really find out where your people
potentially are (based on the profile tools above)

~~~
Question: How do I know if my
social media efforts are paying off?Answer:
From the goals and objectives you established above, you can meaure the
results of your social media efforts with metrics and/or analytics.
- Are you having 2-way conversations on Twitter? Is the number
of your followers steadily increasing?
- Are you answering others' questions on LinkedIn? Did anyone rate your
answer as Best answer in ___?
- Are people answering your questions on LinkedIn? Did you rate someone
as Best answer in ___? (you
should!)
- Are people posting on your wall or interacting with your updates in
Facebook (personal profile and/or Facebook page)?
- Are people commenting on your blog posts (if you blog)?
- There are other ways of determining your ROI (Return on
Investment) for your social media efforts (past or upcoming), but in
the meantime use the
easier metrics (as illustrated with the questions above) to get a
feeling of your success.
Bottom line:
- Establish easy-to-measure metrics and track them periodically
- For a quick read on how you're doing, see:
  - Klout:
http://klout.com/
  - SocialMention:
http://socialmention.com/
-
Klout now measures influence on Twitter and Facebook, and professional
influence on LinkedIn, so assure that you've linked your
accounts
in Klout.
Take care and best success,
Tip of the Week- Read Launc by Michael A. Stelzner
A few weeks ago, I wrote a 3-part Tip of the Week on Social Media. In Social Media Part 2: How Marketers are Using Social Media, I mentioned the Social Media Marketing Industry Report 2011 conducted by the Social Media Examiner.
The founder of Social Media Examiner, Michael A. Stelzner, has just written a book entitled Launch- How to Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition.  I'm about a third of the way through the book and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Rather
than tell you what other websites have done to become successful, he
takes you step-by-step through the launch and subsequent success of his
own website. Michael launched Social Media Examiner as a guide to
social media for small businesses. It was already a very crowded field
and his company was starting from scratch. While he did have a
reputation for writing  white papers (an authoritative guide or
report), his company was virtually unknown in the social media
industry.
The site was launched on October 12, 2009. Within
the first 12 months of launching, Social Media Examiner went from zero
subscribers to over 40,000 email subscribers, received 450,000 monthly
page views, and acquired 20,000 Facebook fans. It became one of the
world's top 25 business blogs, according to Advertising Age and
Technorati, and was considered one of the top two social media blogs.
It also earned more than a million dollars during that first year.
What
I have been finding so valuable about the book is that he really gives
you detailed instructions on how to approach your online business and
exactly which steps he took to create the website's success.
Chapter 1 introduces you to his principles and what he believes is wrong with most marketing
Chapters 2 and 3 teach you how to put systems in place for your online business
Chapters 4 and 5 teach you how to find, recruit, and work with outside experts
Chapters 6, 7, and 8 teach you how to create engaging content
Finally, Chapter 9 shows you ways to employ marketing techniques without being aggressiveKarl
and I feel that our job is help guide you to making your website more
profitable and introduce new valuable thoughts and concepts as they
appear in the ever changing World Wide Web.  This book is one of those
items of value and you can download the first chapter for free.
If you do get the book (and you should), email us and let us know what you thought of it and how it helped your online business.
Take care and best success,
Rick and Karl
