Tip of the Week
Increasing Your Online Visibility
This week we have several Tips for you to increase the visibility
of you and your business online:
-Facebook- Claim your UserName
-Bing- Not just Microsoft's new search engine, but a new way for
your business and website to be found
-Google Local- Add your Business to Google Maps
-Yahoo Local- Add your Business to Yahoo Maps
Facebook- Claim your UserName
Instead of having a series of meaningless letters and numbers to
describe your facebook page you can now claim your own Facebook
Username. To do this, just go to:
http://www.facebook.com/username/ and claim your name.
NOTE: Do this as soon as possible, so you'll claim your name before
others get to it first!
Try to get "www.facebook.com/firstname.lastname" first (if it's
still available), e.g., http://www.facebook.com/karl.kasca.
Otherwise you might need to get creative in uniquely identifying
yourself.
For more info on this see: How To Secure Your Facebook Username
(Vanity URL)
If you have a Facebook Fan Page for your business you can also
claim a custom username for it as well, but you'll need to have a
Facebook Fan Page and wait until June 28th, 2009.

Facebook URLs Too
And if you don't have a Facebook Fan Page yet, then log into IOP
and see our article/video on:

Bing- Not just Microsoft's new search engine, but a new way for
your business and website to be found.
You've probably heard that Microsoft has a new search engine called
Bing. It's actually a relaunch of MSN, which later became MS-Live
search.
In any case, for website owners it's a new opportunity to have your
website be found. To enhance being found you can do two things: 1)
Create a Business Listing and 2) Submit your site's URL (web
address) so Bing will find your website and crawl it.
1) Create a Business Listing
-First go to the Bing Webmaster Center and click "Sign in to use
the tools"
-You'll be prompted to sign in with your Windows Live ID.
◦You may have one of these IDs already if you have a Hotmail or
Microsoft account.
◦Otherwise, you'll have to sign up for a Windows Live ID.
-Click on Business Listings* under "Drive more traffic"
2) Submit your site's URL
-While you're at the Bing Webmaster Center, also Submit your site's
URL* so Bing will crawl the links on your website and find your
other webpages
And note that you don't have to sign in to do this.
Google Local- Add your Business to Google Maps
Of course Google also has a way you can be found locally:
Go to Google Maps
Click: Put your business on Google Maps
Login to Google & go to Google Local Business Center
If you don't have a Google account (e.g., Gmail), you'll need to
create one.
Click: Add new business button
If your business has many locations you can Upload a data file
Yahoo Local- Add your Business to Yahoo Maps
Go to Yahoo! Local
Click Add a Business way down under Local Resources
And no, you don't even have to sign in!
