After recycling the 22 catalogs and burning the 15 offers for credit cards and magazines I was left with just two categories: Bills to pay Requests for Charitable Contributions And it hit me... like really hit me topside the head! I looked at all those requests and wondered why they all come at the same time of year... What hit me was that I had just done the very same thing I sent you two emails requesting support for hungry children. I did it this month Same time as everyone else. And so then I sat back and asked myself Why? Why Now? Why not in October, or January? And I discovered that I'd made a mistake with regards to you. And that I did so based on years of habit and conditioning. My dad always gave big charitable donations in December, and I clearly remember that. Our tax code is set up to motivate people to think about deductions right before the year ends, and organizations like to capitalize on that and send you a nice little self-addressed envelope right when you have your checkbook opened and you are reviewing your yearly accounting. My husband's company offers to match contributions during the month of December. Thus my $100 becomes $200. That's motivation and maybe it has something to do with the company's tax deductions as well. So when the calendar turned to December, my mind hooked into the charitable giving aspect of my primary company. Even though my efforts in that direction do not yield commissions such as I would receive from my normal marketing efforts, the time seemed right to put it out there, and to focus my energy on that aspect.... I was a product of my history as well as all those envelopes in my post office box. But I made a mistake. I did not consider that my request of you to support hungry children through the Visalus Community Giving Program, might be just be lumped in your mind in with all your little charity request envelopes. And in that conglomeration of requests, meaning is lost. It is no longer about the kids. It's just about the business of tax deductions and giving to charity in the same way that we absent mindedly drop quarters in the Salvation Army Santa's bucket. The positive to all this, is that many organization receive A LOT of money in December. That is good for them. And it's good for you to give in December as well. It feels good amidst the often meaningless routine of mall wandering and catalog shopping...and it makes a difference. But for me, my mistake was in not spending the time educating, enlightening and connecting you with what I believe to be the deeper meaning of charitable giving. In our family we give money to most every single homeless person we pass when we are in San Diego. Sometimes it means making a U-turn and back tracking. I've learned to keep a roll of quarters with me, or my daughter will go through my wallet and hand out five dollar bills as we wander through Balboa Park. We donate clothes and toys almost every month. We spent time on holidays in nursing homes or family food donation events. I can't even describe to you how thrilled I was to learn that Visalus had a community challenge to feed hungry kids. It was one of the factors that motivated me to choose this company. I've sat back and re-evaluated. And I've made a decision The Visalus Community Challenge and Visalus Giving is going to be a year round project for me. It is going to be written into my calendar as a significant part of my business efforts every month. My outreach efforts will be well-planned, well-organized and highly educational. Not just a few emails quickly thrown together. Since I'm not really prepared in this way, I will begin this campaign in February..after we've all recovered from the holidays and are back in the nice routine of mid-winter. So you'll be hearing from me again about feeding hungry children. There is no doubt that they need our help. Watch for a series of informational emails and videos beginning in February.
