Welcome to our Changing the Paradigm newsletter. In this issue we have included an excerpt from my recent talk 'Embracing A New Chapter For Mankind' at the Beyond 2012 conference in Scotland in May 2010.

'Embracing A New Chapter For Mankind'

Good morning! (Jeddah smiling) This is my daily exercise, smiling - you can try it too! You notice as you start to smile that your heart lifts, your body relaxes and the chatter in your brain quietens down, and you feel this lovely emanation, this lovely peace, this goodwill coming out of you.  And that starts at the source of our nature, the source of our existence, and it gently radiates through you when you smile.  And that's what I want to speak about today - I want to speak about our nature.

So, we're Embracing a New Chapter for Mankind, and the topic for this conference is 2012. Even though 2012 is a very specific date, which causes a lot of curiosity, a lot of questions, and it also causes some anxiety, I want to speak about the far bigger picture of 2012.  I want to speak about what that is representing and why.

 

Let's have a look at the history of mankind's presence.  If we look at our history right back to the earliest times, in this last 5000 year segment that we've been living in, would we say that this is a successful civilization?  Would we say that our current approach reflects harmony amongst mankind?  If you ask most people in the world, 'Do you think the world is harmonious?' they will say 'No'. Would we say that our stewardship of the planet so far in these last 5000 years has been successful?  Would we say that the way we're living right now on earth, in today's time, is the optimal expression of what's possible?

I would like to present to you today a hypothesis that our present world is a reflection of misunderstanding what life really is, what existence really is - that all of the discord or all the suffering and grief that we see upon our planet comes down to one single root and if we can understand that root, if we can understand how existence functions, then we have a very good chance of starting to roll that understanding out, into our thoughts, into our emotions, into our actions, into our outer world.
