Q: I'm suffering from some long term digestive issues. My doctor put me on various medications that just seemed to cause problem after problem. My joints are starting to ache and I'm not able to gain any strength.

Q: Is it really true that if we workout longer than 60 minutes our cortisol will start burning muscle.
 
A: Absolutely FALSE and I get annoyed at strength coaches that just blog theories they heard, WITHOUT, investigating anything on their own. Here's the deal, in the 50's Russian olympic coaches wanted to find ways to control their athletes lives. They figured that if they could get them to train multiple times a day they'd have better results. The coaches somehow managed to figure out a way to say that our stress hormones rise after about 60 minutes. Thus they were able to have their athletes train multiple times per day. The bigger question is:why you are in the gym that long?
 
Q: I'm getting bored with planks. What are the best ways to advance them?
 
A: Planks are an interesting exercise. They are great for spinal stability but can get pretty boring fast. Here's the best way to advance them
 
Regular plank=1 leg or arm in the air for 10 seconds=side plank=to side plank with opposite arm up=weighted vest side plank.

Side Lunges to a pause
Kneeling hip flexor stretch

All done in superset fashion for 2 sets of 20 reps with 30 seconds rest 
 
Pushups to Pikes
 

Mountain Climbers to Close Grip Push Ups 

 
Reverse Lunges: Here I'll do 60 seconds for each leg then rest.

Allergies getting you too?
 
Puffy eyes, 17 sneezes in a row, sore throat?
 
 
Yeah it's that time of year again...
 
Some experts believe that we're due for one of the WORST allergy seasons EVER, largely in part to our lack of winter. 
 
You really only have three choices when it comes to dealing with your allergies.
 
Option # 1: Go to a doctor and either get put on a temporary prescription to ease the pain now, which does NOTHING for the allergies you'll have a in a month or two
 
Option 1b: He might tell you to go by an over the counter prescription that while effective, isn't going to give you any type of long lasting relief
 
Option # 2: You can just live with it. Personally I've done ok by adding some local honey to my tea and using my nettie pot. I don't have the worst allergies so I can deal.
 
Option # 3: Try some activated quercetin.  This bioflavonoid supports healthy cell function and actually blocks the histamine release associated with your immune system reaction to seasonal environmental changes. I've recently suggested this to clients and tell them to  take 3 pills before or after an allergy attack  and they've all reported feeling better.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret that I practice every morning before I head out to conquer the day.
 
I take a teaspoon of Olive Oil....
 
Now I've lately gotten into the habit of buying a special olive oil from California that tests very high on the polyphenol scale.  You may be familiar with polyphenols but if you aren't, they are organic chemicals that have a tremendous amount of antioxidant powers in the body.
 
Don't worry, any high quality extra virgin olive oil will do....
 
You see any time you go a few hours without eating, around 7-10, you're body starts a cleaning out process known as autophagy....
 
When you wake up in the morning, provided you've slept for around 7 hours, you're in a state of autophagy. 
 
Your body is now attempting to clean out toxic chemicals and waste that is VERY unhealthy to your body. 
 
The trouble is, when we eat a traditional breakfast including lean proteins and quality carbohydrates we actually turn OFF this healthy process.
 
NOT what we want to do.
 
This is where olive oil comes in...
 
A moderate amount of fat, low protein, low carbohydrate food such as olive oil or coconut milk will actually stimulate autophagy and allow our body to remove these toxins.
 
It's worth a try a few mornings per week for improved health and less bodyfat.

 Another week, who's ready to dominate? 

 
Ever hear of the kaizen principle? The Japanese saying essentially means that if you make small gains daily they'll add up to BIG results in the future.
 
So this week's goal is all about making small chances.
 
Monday
 
Make sure you start off right by training hard for JUST 45 minutes. You don't need to hammer the nail through the wood all the way, just enough to get the job done. If you need to spend more than 45 minutes in the gym you should really take a look at how you're spending your time
 
Tuesday
 
Start your day off with a shot of olive oil. That's what I have been doing. Just a teaspoon. More to come on Tuesday
 
Wednesday
 
Sit down with a nice cup of green or black tea and read this article on body weight training. Can it give you REAL, tangible strength gains? 
 

Thursday
 

 Participate in my daily questions and answer segment on my Facebook Page
 

Friday 


 

Grill up some nice grass fed beef. High in omega-3 fatty acids and other vital micronutrients like zinc and vitamin C, this beef is the BEST I've tasted. 
 
Saturday
 
If you have some yard work to do I suggest you grab some quercetin. This nutrient helps to block Histamine release which blunts allergic reactions to pollen and dust. So if you're going to do yard work today then make sure you take 3 pills about 30 minutes before you do anything.

 
Sunday
 
Do nothing. Seriously. Learn how to relax.
