The aim of the book is inspire you when improvising lead over blues songs and for you to make sure your wringing the most blue out of your sound as possible. Steve Prosser: Intervallic Ear Training for Musicians

Traditional ear training studies based on intervals tend to focus on learning and memorising relationships between pitches that resolve (eg G down to C, a Perfect Fifth.) However according to author Steve Prosser, professor of ear training at Berklee, if you remove intervals from their implied sense of resolution, you will be hearing the interval in its purest sense. This will strengthen both your ability to sightread intervals as well as compose music away from the piano. The book combines step-by-step instruction in this approach, with supporting graded exercises and practice etudes for each interval. For all serious musicians.

Rich Thompson: How to Play Drums in a Big Band

Here is a new approach that will help all intermediate level drummers to play correctly in the big band style. Author and Eastman School of Music professor Rich Thompson explains the key points of big band drumming, from how to read and interpret big band charts, through to correct setup and tuning of your drums. The method is also a play along for you to copy the patterns and nuances of the seven sample pieces (a mixture of standards and originals from Basie jazz to ECM contemporary charts.) The CD features two tracks for each song, so you can copy the examples and then try out the techniques in your own playing.

Dear ,

Jamey Aebersold volume 54: Maiden Voyage

A great beginner's play along for all instruments

Play 14 of the world's most popular jazz jam session
tunes at relaxed tempos with a world-class rhythm section. At slower tempos you have more time to think, listen to your sound, and try out new ideas.
Jamey Aebersold created this play along specifically for beginner jazz players. He chose well known songs with easy chord progressions that jazz musicians love to play. He also slowed the tempos right down, as standard tempos can be hard to keep up with when you're learning.
This play along will keep you practising day after day because the songs are timeless and in a variety of important styles: from swinging standards such as Summertime and Autumn Leaves to funky grooves such as Cantaloupe Island and Watermelon Man; to the mellow bossa Solar Flair (similar to Blue Bossa); and modal classics such as Maiden Voyage, and Impressions. Plus Footprints; Song For My Father; Satin Doll; Doxy; blues in F; blues in Bb and an important workout on the III-VI-II-V7 turnaround.
Maiden Voyage also contains useful bonus lessons by Jamey Aebersold which will show you: how to practise and memorise the songs; which scales and chords are most important (and how to 'spell' them); how to solo and sound good.
Best of all, the recordings on the CD sound great and are really fun to play along with. The CD tracks feature Jamey Aebersold (piano); Tyrone Wheeler (bass); Steve Davis (drums) and are recorded with stereo separation allowing you to eliminate either bass or piano. Hear sample tracks from Volume 54 Maiden Voyage.
Maiden Voyage is one of the Aebersold volumes you can't live without. - recent Jazzwise customer feedback, submitted via Feefo

Dear ,

The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine

This classic manual explains how you can use theoretical concepts to improve your playing, referring to influential recordings and using the terms that working jazz musicians use.
If you've ever heard jazz musicians play chords or improvised lines that you couldn't figure out, not only will you find them here, but you'll also learn exactly how and where you can apply them in your own playing.

In over 500 pages, the author guides you from basic chord construction and the II-V-I progression, through scale theory, the blues, 'I Got Rhythm' changes, slash chords, the bebop and pentatonic scales, to a comprehensive study of reharmonisation and advice on how to read a lead sheet and memorise tunes.

All of these topics and many more are discussed in a conversational style and brought to life with over 750 music examples, transcribed from actual recordings of the jazz greats. You can treat The Jazz Theory Book as a complete course or you can dip into it for specific advice on pentatonic scales or the Coltrane changes.

However you use it, it is full of inspiring ideas and information that you can put straight into practice.

Finally, a book that is very easy to understand yet still covers all the basics anyone would need to know to get started or, in the case of the advanced player, wonderful information on areas such as playing 'outside', reharmonisation, etc. This is the book every musician should own."- Bobby Shew, jazz trumpet
