We are creating The Ride of Your Life

I want to give an update to you who have patiently been waiting for our Ezine. We have had so many changes since late summer of 2010 that I wanted to just blast out a letter that will turn into our Ezine soon.

We picked up Passoni and Cyfac as premium custom frames to go into our KGS Custom Bicycles. The story behind this is interesting and in fact a major press release is hitting the internet tomorrow describing an adventure of one couple that turned into a cycling experience for two couples.

KGS Bikes is getting many couples who want to ride together and the custom bicycle is the link. With one person more advanced than the other, we have found that the gap closes considerably when we can design a bike around the owner. Not only are they now stronger and faster, because of a better position, but the bike handles better and corners that were previously scary, traffic that was unnerving, as well as climbing and descending are now fun.

Our focus is getting more fine tuned as we are seeing relatively few premium clients (about 40 a year) from all over the globe, who have discovered that the cost of getting the very best is expensive in production bike terms (about $15,000-30,000 or so) but compared to a premium car, airplane, motorcycle, second home, or other big ticket item, it is very inexpensive. The best car available would cost millions, and the best private jet would as well. The best bicycle is quite affordable by comparison.

We have traveled to Dallas, Houston and Austin to work with people and have found that the best solution by far is to invite you to visit us in San Antonio. Besides the fact that San Antonio is an incredible destination location, having all the tools to find a perfect position is so much better and we can do a better job. So, I may go visit some people who will pay for the privilege, but it is much better to come here!

As summer is finally around the corner, we are getting more inquiries from folks who want to get a custom bicycle for the summer. There is one thing that needs to be considered and that is lead time. It takes 3-4 months to get a custom bicycle designed, manufactured, built and delivered. If you have a super special custom paint job that could take longer. KGS / Parlee time trial bicycles also take much longer, about six months, to build. The point is, if you are thinking about custom, you will be happy in the long run, but we have work to do and it is now!

Finally, our new slogan is, The Ride of Your Life. We used Perfectly Fit for years but the difference between a bike that is really designed around you and a bike that is fitted to you is so great that we had to rethink what is really happening here. Time and time again, people report back that they have never felt like they have since they got their new KGS custom bicycle. We want to continue to focus on the important part of the equation, which is you! The technology is available to find your real position. We can design a bike around it. The ride you get from it is the value. It is a premium bike, of course, but nothing compares to the feeling of perfection that comes from a bicycle that supports you in that perfect position.

You also get another big value in your custom ride, and that is the ability to train harder and do so in less time. The more intense your workout, the less time it takes. If your joints and muscles can recover faster because they are not stressed due to positioning problems, then you can really improve.

In closing, thank you for your patience in the lack of Ezines. I hope you have been thinking about custom bicycles, however and if the time is right, give us a call and allow us to change your cycling life for the better!

KGS Bikes "Perfectly Fit" Ezine, Volume 2 / Issue 017

I have a team of pros from all over the world that will help me provide you with great info and a place for you to find out what you want to know. Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.
Our main article discusses the interesting phenomenon of fear relating to custom bikes and positioning.
Our BikeTech Help Desk has a question regarding the best way to set up a studio cycle, or spin bike. We also have a question about what to do with a broken carbon trispoke wheel.
Don't forget to visit our blog as new stuff is posted there almost daily. It is easy to subscribe to the blog so you can get updates sent to you.
Thanks again for letting me share with you a little about cycling. I respect your time and will strive to continue to make it worth it.
Upcoming Events

We received a nice note from our friend Guillermo Mascarenas in Mexico, who purchased a couple of KGS Parlees as a husband and wife set:
Hi Kevin,
Just want to let you know that the more I ride the new Parlee, the better it gets!! Thank you very much for convincing me to do this project. The whole process was a lot of fun, well worth the time and money. My shoulder pain is gone and the quality of my rides substantially increased. The best part however, was our memorable 'closing lunch' where we met Toni and enjoyed some great American wine.
All the best,
Guillermo
Feature Article - What are you Afraid of?
As spring finally begins
to bloom in our El Nino year, people are getting more and more interested in bicycling. KGS Bikes has always been more of a global business and this year, I have been getting more feedback from people in the local area. There seem to be two distinct types of conversations. The first is, Wow, I never knew a place like this existed! This is the expected response ever since I opened the doors, committed to finding a perfect position more than joining the rest of the pack to sell a deal. The second one is much more interesting, and has two variants. I have been afraid to go in your store, prior to now, or I am afraid to go in your store because I might buy something. On one hand, I could snort and think, How preposterous! What is so scary about a bike studio? On the other hand, however, there are so many people expressing fear of even stepping one foot in the door, I wonder how this happened. We do have a big part of our old brain that is devoted to fear. In wild animals, fear keeps them from being eaten. The problem is, we have a big new brain that tries to outsmart the old brain, with mixed results. We are really animals, deep inside, despite how our society tries to deny it. In fact, we participate in active sports like bicycling to keep physically fit and to manufacture some adversity and challenge, since we don't have to go hunt buffalo anymore to survive.
So, back to the question of fear. I like to analyze why most people buy bikes in the first place. If a bike was chosen based on peer pressure or marketing hype, and it doesn't perform as advertised, one could easily have a fear of discovering the new or existing bike doesn't fit. This possibility is real, and if one comes into the studio and the true position is derived, the bike has a 95% chance of being incapable of being adjusted to the correct position. For better or for worse, this I have known this for years, and actually did not set out to sell only custom bikes. We have about 20 frames that are basically unsellable because I wanted to have inventory like the other guys, but found far too few people that could actually ride them. What I find fascinating is the fact that so many people who know of us don't want to know if they can ride more comfortably or efficiently.
Seth Godin likens this to willful ignorance vs. active skepticism. I believe that the unwillingness to admit that losses may have to be taken to really improve cycling creates this fear.
Paradoxically, when one gets a stock bike, and even gets a deal, it is rare...

Kevin,
I need to add training hours during the week and I will be attending my first studio cycling class. Since I found my position on the bike recently I don't know how I can set up the spin bike to work for me.
What do I do?

Kevin,
I hit a massive pothole in a triathlon recently and I thought that I had just blown out a tire. Alas, I discovered that my HED trispoke rear wheel has a big bump in it. Actually, the wheel goes side to side and I can feel a hop. I took it to a bike shop in Houston and they said it can't be fixed. Is this true?

Feature Article - Inconspicuous Consumption
As the economy begins its recovery, it is interesting to note how consumers behave. While last year people either didn't buy bikes or for the most part bought the least expensive ones possible, the aversion to conspicuous consumption was palpable. This year, one of my competitors has sold a record number of Pinarello Dogma bicycles, that are stock, production bikes with a price tag that can approach $20,000.
I saw a recent blog post by Seth Godin called Revisiting Conspicuous Consumption and I thought the parallels to KGS Bikes' business model were most interesting. Here is the intro snippet:
The reason you have a front lawn? It's a tradition. Lawns were invented as a way for the landed gentry to demonstrate that they could afford to waste land. By taking the land away from the grazing sheep, they were sending a message to their neighbors. We're rich, we can happily waste the opportunity to make a few bucks from our front lawn.
Conspicuous consumption has a long history. Wasting millions of dollars on a shark in a tank, or on $50,000 platinum stereo cables that sound an awful lot like $2000 stereo cables (which sound a lot like $200 stereo cables). And on and on.
In fact, the origins of the luxury goods industry lie in this desire to waste, in public. 350 years ago in France, Jean-Baptiste Colbert dreamed up the idea of bespoke, rare goods as a way of improving France's balance of trade. LVMH and other huge corporations collect brands that telegraph scarcity above all else. Not that they're better at performing the task at hand, merely that they are expensive and rare.
I had written recently about the
difference between Luxury, which is how I describe the Pinarello Dogma, and Premium, which is how I describe a KGS Custom bicycle. A luxury bike doesn't perform significantly better than its less expensive counterpart, but is rarer and much more expensive. A premium bike, however performs much better than the less expensive counterpart and even the Luxury counterpart, because the expertise behind the design and construction actually do improve the comfort, efficiency and handling of the bike. People are seeking out hand crafted expertise these days, using what I call Inconspicuous Consumption. While those in the know understand that an $18,000 KGS / Parlee Custom Triathlon bicycle is not only a work of art, but a true extension of the rider, it is just a bicycle to the untrained eye. Seth Godin explains further in his blog post:

Kevin,
I have been looking at a new bike and some bikes are described as having twitchy or aggressive steering and others are defined as stable, or slow in steering. I want to race triathlons, and am an aggressive competitor, so do I want aggressive steering? Is that the same as twitchy?

Since I delivered Julie Crosno's custom Parlee triathlon bike I received comments from both Julie and her husband Mark.
Mark's comments:
Actually we had to delay the first ride until yesterday and we could not have picked a better/worse day for it. These may have been some of the strongest winds I have ever ridden in. Julie did the right thing and spent about an hour just feeling out the new ride. What was amazing was how well she held lines. She stayed in the bars in 30 mph cross winds. It was unreal. A pretty solid racer that we went out with said it was unreal that she stayed in during those winds.
What I really liked was at the end of the ride when the other guy we were riding with (after Julie had pulled for 35 to 40 miles) started to go hard into 30 plus MPH winds, Julie closed and just hung like it was second nature. Another noticeable change was turning in the bars and pulling out a water bottle with one are in for the entire process. That was all new.
Julie's comments:
It was very awesome...
Kevin, I don't even know what to say, except thanks and I feel very lucky to be working with someone of your caliber. Mark forgot to mention that my hamstring/sciatic nerve issue was about 97% gone on the new bike and the last 3% is residual.
I didn't know that Mark had noticed the bridge up I did on Charles towards the end of the ride. J
Thanks so much, Julie and Mark, for your faith in KGS Bikes. It is a great feeling knowing that the leap of faith in getting a custom bike results in such huge gains.

Feature Article - Setup 101 - Triathlon Bikes
I just delivered a new custom Parlee triathlon bike to our friend Julie Crosno. I had written about her successes with repositioning on an existing bike, and thought it would be fun to describe what makes this custom bicycle unique, special and different.
A triathlon bike is a very specialized machine and many folks are unaware of the job it is really supposed to do. By explaining how we define a great position and then design the bike around that position, we can explain the basics of getting from swim to run via bike in the fastest possible manner.
The first thing people think about in a triathlon bike is aerodynamics. Competing bike manufacturers spend millions on marketing this aerodynamic feature over that and glossing over the other less sexy stuff that makes a bike go fast. From KGS Bikes' perspective, the least aerodynamic part of the rider/bike equation is the rider, so we need to deal with rider position the most. Additionally, the more aggressive the aerodynamic position, the less powerful it is. This is a real problem and is the biggest culprit in many triathletes lack of success on the bike. To some extent, power trumps aero, but a decent aero position is critically important.
Here is the checklist that we go through to assure a position is a good one.

Can you stay in the aerobars the entire event, comfortably? This is the biggie. If you have to sit up because of discomfort, because the bike doesn't handle well in corners or descents or for any other reason, you are going slow. Very slow. This is the first issue that gets corrected in a custom bike. You need to comfortably stay in the aerobars. Squirming around is not a good thing! The bars may be too low, you may be too far forward, the reach may be too long, any number of factors can contribute.
Can you hold your head still so your aero helmet (if you use one) stays in the right position? Many folks have to look down because it is uncomfortable to hold their head up for any length of time. The aero helmet is only fast in one position. If you can't see or hold your head up, the bars are too low.
Does your hip flexor catch at the top of the pedal stroke?

Hi Kevin,
I recently visited your studio and was shocked when I saw the saddle on your Parlee. It has no padding and I am unable to figure out how you ride that bike. I see all the ads for anatomic saddles and have to ask, are you hurting yourself?

A Note from Kevin
Welcome to Perfectly Fit, our newsletter which is designed to help you get the most out of an active, cycling lifestyle. I have a team of pros from all over the world that will help me provide you with great info and a place for you to find out what you want to know. Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.
I had great ambitions to have a video intro for this issue but was called out of town and am writing from the beautiful mountains of Albuquerque.
Our main article talks about the issues we all face as aging cyclists. I discuss how Growing Old is much better and different than Becoming Old!
Our BikeTech Help Desk has a question about gear inches and what in the world they are, plus we have a great question on the humble handlebar stem.
Don't forget to visit our blog as new stuff is posted there almost daily. It is easy to subscribe to the blog so you can get updates sent to you.
Thanks again for letting me share with you a little about cycling. I respect your time and will strive to continue to make it worth it.
Upcoming Events
These days I am hard at work designing bikes for so many of you it keeps me close to home. I am looking for triathlons and running events to photograph and meet more of you in your element. Let me know if I can help photograph your event as I love seeing you folks doing your best.
Every positioning session is an event and one which you will find most valuable. Don't forget lead times in these custom bikes. With six to eight week deliveries, you need to factor that into your purchase plans so your season can be best utilized for success.
Feature Article - Getting Old is Not for Sissies
I have been riding bicycles a long time and see great cyclists and incredible individuals from As the spring bicycle buying season is arriving, I am getting more folks telling me that their bike used to fit and now they have issues. Almost all are over 35. I'm not surprised and here's why.
There is a physiological change around 35-40 years of age where the body doesn't respond to injury or fatigue the same way. Recovery is compromised, over-use injuries start happening and life is different. This explains why many professional athletes have careers that end during this time period who are subjected to extreme stress. Football, basketball, professional cycling at the elite level, you name it, many folks retire about this age.
KGS Bikes is all about helping people not retire from an active lifestyle and as such, is heavily involved with education. The big problem in cycling is the worship of the bike. When your positional needs become more pronounced, you defend the bike. I maintain that your positional needs didn't change. What did change, however, was your ability to tolerate being in a less than perfect position.
Since history has a way of repeating itself, let's discuss a time in bicycling when these issues weren't prevalent. This time was the late 1970's and before. That period and today is separated by two significant differences. The first is the basic performance position has changed. Eddy Merckx rode a bike with a much more relaxed seat angle plus higher handlebars than are present today. In fact, most cyclists had their handlebars at or near saddle height, allowing the comfortable use of the tops, the brake hoods and the handlebar drops for hand positions. These bikes were designed to be comfortable and efficient in the mountains over stage race courses that could average 130 miles. Hard efforts were possible and recovery was easier.
The American Criterium style of bike design changed all that in the early 80's. I was a full time bicycle racer at the time and I completely bought into the concept. I raced short criterium events and wanted my handlebars as low as possible. When I dropped the bars and moved the saddle forward, I was comfortable all-out, but anything less than a 100% effort was not fun. I started having saddle problems too!
The second big difference from bikes then and now is the change from quill stems to the threadless stems available now. Back then, it was very easy to raise the handlebars a bit if too low. Now, if the fork steerer is cut, you are out of luck.
Some side benefits to this are the massive improvement in saddles and in cycling shorts. Back in the day, saddles didn't need a split and the chamois in shorts was not that good. Today, many problems have been fixed, yet people still have chronic back pain, saddle pain, neck pain and numbness in the hands. The culprit is the basic design of current bikes and the way they are marketed.
A professional bike racer who is competitive these days will have

Kevin,
I am trying to choose between 650 and 700 wheels on my new custom bike and I vaguely remember you saying that the gears need to be different. I also read about gear inches and wonder if this is what you are talking about?
BTW I have a triple chainring on my cranks and 8 speed gears on the back of my current bike.

Hi Kevin,
I see a lot of short stems and long stems, and some of them turn up or turn down. What is the difference and why should I care other than how it looks?

Feature Article - From Don Quixote to Del Rio, or The Day I Met RAAMBO
I have been riding bicycles a long time and see great cyclists and incredible individuals from all over the world. Sometimes, however, people really touch my heart and inspire me to take my game to the next level. Let me tell you a story about Dexter Dex Tooke.
I have had my share of windmill tilting, from racing bicycles full time, to an Olympic Sailing Campaign that had me racing sailboats all over, to starting an aviation manufacturing business with products that were the right thing at the wrong time. I always believed in setting big goals and then figuring out how to achieve them. Sometimes I achieved my goals and sometimes there were spectacular failures, or learning experiences, as I like to call them. I recently had the opportunity to help Dex fine tune his position for a big goal he has set for himself, the Race Across America (RAAM). I may have forgotten to mention that Dex is pushing 60 years old! I have crossed paths with RAAM riders in the past and knew of the extreme nature of the race. I have also done big campaigns like my sailing program and knew of the difficulty in planning, fund raising, training and execution. Dex had his work cut out for him. Here is a passage from Dex's website that explains what RAAM really is.
It has been called the toughest race in the world. A non-stop transcontinental battle on bicycle that pits man against competitor, man against nature and ultimately man against himself. Across the wide spread of this majestic continent, an adventure is reborn every year that challenges the brave to find, then crush their physical, emotional and even spiritual limits.
Race Across America is a non-stop bicycle race of over 3000 miles starting in Oceanside, California and ending in Annapolis, Maryland. Competitors come from all over the world with Europe usually dominating the field.
The heart of the race is the solo division. This is where the ultimate challenge lies. Solo riders finish in 9-12 days averaging 250 to 350 miles per day.
Once the starting gun fires in Oceanside, the clock does not stop until each racer crosses the finish line in Annapolis. The race format is essentially a time trial. There is no drafting or hiding from the wind. It is a solo effort.
The route takes competitors from 170 feet below sea level in Death Valley in temperatures of 120 F up to 10,550 feet above sea level and temperatures in the 30's at Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. Passing through the Rockies, the Ozarks and the Appalachian Mountains, RAAM has over 110,000 vertical feet of climbing.
The Race Across America is so staggering that merely to finish, is to most, the accomplishment of a lifetime. RAAM is a breeding ground for champions, a testing ground for elite riders and a shining example of the strength of human spirit. Since it's inception in 1982, less than 300 people have completed the solo division within the required 12 day cut-off.
It has been said that less than one hundredth of 1% of the population is capable of completing an Ironman Triathlon. There are over 70,000 competitors that complete an Ironman each year. Typically, only 15 solo competitors complete RAAM annually.
Now that we know what Dex is up to, let's consider a few other factors that make the challenge even more interesting.

All over the country, it is raining, snowing, windy and cold. This is no time to think about bicycles, or is it? We are getting complaints of cabin fever from all over. Personally, I can't wait for an opportunity to start riding my bicycle more.
This week marks a first for KGS Bikes. We have been talking about it for a long time, but now it's official. Our Remote Positioning Program is beginning this week starting with an ad program at PEZ Cycling News.
Since KGS Bikes opened, we have worked hard to get our positioning philosophy out to clients and friends but it is not always easy to travel to San Antonio. Not only that, I found out that traveling to outlying cities was horribly expensive and I spread myself too thin.
Thank goodness for our friends at Parlee Cycles. They were the first frame manufacturer that I have worked with who really understood my positioning science and they have created a FlexFit line of bicycles for road and triathlon that have dimensions that I can use with more people than traditional stock bikes. This semi custom concept allows me to take my BalancePoint(TM) positioning concept and leverage it. If you can measure your bike with the KGS setup parameters, I can take your bike setup and design an improvement without your need to travel.
If you are going all the way for a custom frame, I still recommend we meet in person because the last millimeters of perfection can only be done that way. Many people, however, have a pretty good setup as it is and I can take those numbers and put my skills to work in optimizing balance. The result is a semi custom dream bike for a fraction of the cost of custom; one which is available right now!
How can we pull this off?

Welcome to Perfectly Fit, our newsletter which is designed to help you get the most out of an active, cycling lifestyle. I have a team of pros from all over the world that will help me provide you with great info and a place for you to find out what you want to know. Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.
We are starting off the year with a bang, expanding our ability to work remotely with you. I have created a semi custom remote program that allows us to take your setup and redefine it without the need to come to San Antonio. If you have confidence in your position this is a way you can save time and money and I can work with you very effectively. Send me an email for more info.
Today's main article discusses the way I see the bike business (and other retail industries) and how they make a living by making you think a certain way about your expertise, their products and how your pocketbook is repeatedly opened! I explain a little more about why we have a different business model and how that helps you.
Our BikeTech Help Desk has a couple of questions from triathletes. The first discussed the tradition of inflating tires before a race and the second talks about the right gear for transitions.
Don't forget to visit our blog as new stuff is posted there almost daily. It is easy to subscribe to the blog so you can get updates sent to you.
Thanks again for letting me share with you a little about cycling. I respect your time and will strive to continue to make it worth it.

This time of year I am staying close to home because people are making the trek to San Antonio. Every positioning session is an event and one which you will find most valuable. Don't forget lead times in these custom bikes. With six to eight week deliveries, you need to factor that into your purchase plans so your season can be best utilized for success. With our Semi Custom Remote program we can slash lead times so contact us to learn more.Feature Article - Fifty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong, r Can They?

I performed a positioning analysis
this weekend and wanted to share some of his observations after he discovered his true position. I find this happens so often when folks visit me that it is a fascinating phenomenon. Here is the premise: I believe that bicycle design has been driven by marketing departments, taking a sizing model from young, professional racers and overlaying that model on the general population. Add to that, every other fitting system I have seen than my own allows a person working in a bike shop (fit expert) to fit a person to a stock or custom bike with enough success that the customer keeps the bike. From a retail perspective, this is brilliant. The bike is not really right and one continually upgrades saddles, stems, bars, you name it, to improve the bike. From the consumer's perspective it is a way to incur lots of hidden or unnoticed expenses without really improving the experience. I see how this works, as my business doesn't rely on people coming back and upgrading their bike, rather it relies on people being happy enough with the experience that they tell their friends. A dress shop, for example, would go out of business if all they sold were practical items that lasted a long time and were not trendy.
I have designed a business model where I take a bike, which is traditionally an impulse buy commodity, and turn it into a durable good with long term value. That sounds simple in theory, but in practice, I find clients have a tough time believing that one store could have a breakthrough in positioning that really does challenge the system. Fifty Million Frenchmen can't be wrong, right? What I find is that people are conditioned to believe that an entire industry wouldn't exist if it didn't ultimately serve the consumer in the best possible manner. Marketing departments rely on this cultivation theory and some bike brands are absolute masters in convincing you that their bike is incredible, desirable and uniquely perfect for you!
The consumer becomes an expert based on this concept, outlined as the Dunning Kruger effect, and based on advertising and the advice of a magazine or local bike shop employee then sinks a lot of money into a bike. Then the process of justifying that decision takes over.
I don't know what is more powerful, the need to be right or the inability to recognize that a decision was made that requires ...

Kevin,
I am doing my first triathlon in a few weeks. I have a new set of race wheels and was told to pump up the air to the max the night before the race, and to not worry about checking them the morning of the race. Is this a good idea?

Welcome to Perfectly Fit, our newsletter which is designed to help you get the most out of an active, cycling lifestyle. I have a team of pros from all over the world that will help me provide you with great info and a place for you to find out what you want to know. Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.
This is our first issue for 2010 and I am thrilled to be able to help you make this your best year ever. The economy has been tough on bike shops and they are closing at the rate of a shop a day across the country. I am so happy to have kept the focus of KGS Bikes on quality and integrity and pledge to work even harder for you this year.
Our main article talks about the pedal choices that the triathlete has and how this impacts shoes and the transitions. It is fairly technical and if you have more questions please let me know.
Our BikeTech Help Desk has one question this time, about the potential problems with wireless power meters.
Don't forget to visit our blog as new stuff is posted there almost daily. It is easy to subscribe to the blog so you can get updates sent to you.
Thanks again for letting me share with you a little about cycling. I respect your time and will strive to continue to make it worth it.

As the new year approaches I have spent considerable time in reflection One of the funny quirks of the bicycle business is pedals. Bikes are typically sold without pedals and there are what seem like a zillion different types. For the triathlete, especially one who comes from a running background, this is both confusing and can get very expensive if the wrong decisions are made.
A triathlete needs to consider one big issue before choosing a pedal type. This is, Will I leave the shoes mounted on the bicycle in the transitions, or not? This is such a strong determinant of pedal and shoe needs that we need to define either Type A, those who leave the shoes on the bike at all times, running barefooted to and from transition, or Type B, those who don their shoes at the transition, run to the bike mount line and clip in, then at T2, unclip and run in the cycling shoes to the racking station.
The reasons for this are as follows. If you have to run in your cycling shoes, the cleats could pick up mud or worse, cause you to slip and fall. Both are big time wasters in a race against the clock. If you leave your shoes on the bike, you have a different problem. The cleats won't pick up mud, but the straps of the shoes could get caught in between the chain and the big chainring. Not cool.
Now we can talk about pedals. A modern bicycle pedal has to do two things. First it has to have a clip system that will allow the shoe to easily attach, hold the foot in position in all normal cycling moves and of course, unclip easily in case of stopping or crashing. Second, it has to transfer the energy from the rider's foot to the crank arm efficiently.
There are three major
types of pedal systems, while there are many sub types. For the purposes of this article, I will call them Speedplay type, which has a big cleat, metal walking surface and internal clips, Look type (which includes Shimano, Campagnolo and other similar types) which have the clips on the pedal, and a plastic cleat that has a fore and aft external tab to mate with the clips, and SPD, or mountain bike type (includes Crank Brothers, etc) which are small metal cleats with external tabs like Look type, but recessed into a shoe with a walking surface. Each pedal type has advantages and disadvantages. Let's start with Speedplay. Two variants of Speedplay pedals are available...

Hey Kevin,
I had a question on what you think is better? A wireless or wired power system. I've heard the wireless is a nice feature and is easy to get on and start taking care of business. However, I also hear that it drops data at certain points. Is a wired power system generally more robust? Is a wireless system the way things go? I would love to hear your opinion.
Best,
Gee Li

Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.
This is our last issue for 2009 and I have reflected on the things that went well and those that didn't. In our main article today I write about Changing the Game, to continue to improve the way I can help KGS Bikes serve you better! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have a job and I never forget this. The coming year will bring all sorts of new things.
Speaking of the coming year, I have gotten our video production to the point where I will be introducing videos to help, particularly with technical issues. Please send me questions that can be answered in a video!
Our BikeTech Help Desk addresses tubular tires and the reasons I endorse them, plus talks about adjusting gears and why you should learn to do it yourself.

Feature Article - Changing the Game

As the new year approaches I have spent considerable time in reflection regarding the things that went well and those that didn't in 2009. I don't believe that anyone was spared, directly or indirectly, by the economic upheaval that was such a big part of our lives this last year. I learned the similarities and differences between my business and that of the bicycle industry and have started my ongoing project to change the game for you.
The state of the bicycle business is as follows: Bikes, even nice ones, are impulse buys. They for the most part are commodities and traditional bike shops try to sell them as if they are not. The bottom line is, however, most bikes are mass produced machines that can be purchased at a discount somewhere. All the other stuff for sale at bike shops is a commodity too and that is why bike shops discount and do everything they can to get your local business.
How I want to change the game is to separate the bicycle purchase from the rest of the bike shop food chain. If you plan your bike purchase properly, you can get more than a commodity for less money long term and increase your enjoyment, comfort and performance. That is a big deal.
Another goal of mine...

Hi Kevin,
I recently read that you endorse tubular tires over clinchers, even for everyday training. I get flats all the time and wonder if you might change your tune in my case. I weigh 200 lbs.

Kevin,
I just got a new bike with Nokon cables and after the second ride the gears don't shift well. I am having second thoughts about these expensive cables. What gives? Will I constantly have to bring my bike back for adjustments?
