How to Be Successful with Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is one of the best ways to build exposure, authority, and traffic. When done the right way, it can bring in more leads and sales than you could possibly imagine!
Over the last year, I have seen several writers emerge with a talent for writing amazing content at an unbelievable rate. You've probably seen them too - Leo Widrich, Gregory Ciotti, and Danny Iny are just a few.
Last week, I got the chance to do an interview with Danny Iny. Danny has earned himself the nickname Freddy Krueger of Blogging because he has written for so many great blogs including KISSmetrics, Copyblogger, ProBlogger, Freelance Folder, DIYthemes, Smashing Magazine, Think Traffic, and Daily Blog Tips. As someone who also writes for many sites at a time, I know that this is no easy task while maintaining a business.
Do you want to know how we do it? How we keep creating blog post after blog post and get published on sites that drive tons of new traffic, leads, and sales our way? If so, then don't miss Danny's new course - Write Like Freddy.
In this course, Danny details everything from finding the best places to publish your posts to writing the perfect blog post. It's broken into four video modules - you can also download each module in MP3 format with PDF slides, worksheets, and handouts that will help you become a prolific guest blogger and writer.
So don't miss out! Check out Write Like Freddy today and learn how to become a successful writer in your niche!

What I've Been Up To Lately

It has been a bit since I last sent out a newsletter, but I only like to send it out when there is something awesome happening. Today, I have four awesome things to share with you to shed a little light into where I've been.
1. I entered the world of self-employment!
And it is exciting! After three years of working on my blog and balancing the 9 to 5 along with freelance work, it finally became the right time to make the transition into full time self-employment. Although I've only been at it for two weeks, I can already tell I'm going to love it!
2. I attended BlogWorld Expo in Los Angeles.
There is nothing like taking your new found, self-employed freedom to a conference and telling everyone about it in real life. In general, I love meeting fellow bloggers and this year I worked on being less introverted and more social. I think it turned out well as I strengthened a lot of online connections as well as made new ones. It was a wonderful experience! The sessions I attended were pretty good too.
3. I won two blogging contests.
Over the past few months, I won two pretty awesome blogging contests. I've got a pretty good process participating in contests now, and I've shared the four things it really comes down to!
4. I updated my eBook.
A lot has changed online since February when I first launched the Blog Post Promotion Guide. In particular, Google+ entered the social media scene, Facebook partly launched their Timeline profile, CommentLuv changed, Livefyre jumped in with latest posts in comments, and I discovered new tricks with RSS for content sharing and Google Analytics for measuring results. All of those things are in the latest update which is now being offered at a 2nd edition introductory price of $25!
If you already purchased the 1st edition, just reply to this email with your Paypal address and I'll forward you a copy of the updated edition!

Where is Your Money Going Next Month?

Sometimes, it's easy to forget about the little things when it comes to your finances. A little monthly fee here, and another one there can eventually add up to a lot if you aren't careful however.
One thing I did this weekend was go through my accounts to see what little fees were coming out to determined which ones were necessary and which ones I could live without.
Where did I find my biggest savings? In my Paypal account. There were a lot of little newsletters, forums, and services I had signed up for that only cost a little, most $9.99 or less per month. Others were annual memberships of around $20 per year.
Once I decided which ones I don't use anymore, I canceled them. Had I not canceled them, I would have spent $500 over the course of the next year on stuff I'm not really using. It's a little embarrassing, but better to discover it now than later.
Canceling Your Subscriptions
So this weekend, take a poke through your accounts and see what you could be saving. I can't help you with where to look for banks, credit cards, and what not, but I can help you with these two commonly used payment services.
For subscriptions in Paypal, you'll need to login to your account, then go to your Profile > More Options > My Money. Then click the Update link next to My preapproved payments.
Here, you'll see a list of all of the merchants you have authorized to grab payments from your Paypal account. If you see one you're no longer interested in, click on the profile and then click the Cancel link.
Before you do though, be sure it's not something you need that might be under a name you don't recognize, like the $5 per month under 19.5 Degrees that goes to E-Junkie who I use to sell my Blog Promotion Guide. Definitely a service I don't need to cancel!
For subscriptions on Amazon (I've only had one so far that used their system), you'll have to login to your Amazon account, go to the Your Account page, and under Your Other Accounts go to your Amazon Payments Account (or you can directly to payments.amazon.com and login there). Once you're in Amazon Payments, go to Your Account and Your Subscriptions to view and cancel your subscriptions there.
Hope this helps you save a bit of money! I'm going to put my savings toward Blog World Expo - only two months to go!

Blog World Expo 2011 Discount Code

It's that time of year again. In less than four months, it will be time for the biggest blogging event on the West Coast - Blog World Expo 2011 in Los Angeles on November 3rd - 5th.
Why I'm Attending Blog World Expo in LA
I had a blast in Las Vegas last year at my first Blog World Expo and expect the same this year. Granted, I'm not familiar with LA like I am Vegas, but I'm sure it will be awesome nonetheless.
The best thing for me was the networking - I got to meet bloggers who are readers of Kikolani, bloggers who have inspired me, and bloggers I have collaborated with on other sites including Social Media Examiner.
You can read more about my reasons for attending in today's blog post, as well as see what I loved about the event last year in my 2010 recap.
Why You Should Register Now
Right now until July 21st, Blog World is offering early bird registration which gets you up to half off pricing for the full event. Plus, if you use the discount code KIKOALNI20, you can get an additional 20% any pass at any time until the day of the event.
It's big savings that you can use toward your hotel, dining expenses, and the after parties. So don't miss out - register now and use KIKOLANI20 for the best pass prices!

Guest Posting Opportunities

Kikolani is currently accepting guest posts!
I am looking for posts with intermediate to advanced level content on blogging and social media, and as you know from my site, I like lengthier posts with a minimum 700 word count.
If you are interested, just reply to this newsletter or contact me through the website with topic ideas or a fully written guest post. Be sure to include an email address associated with Gravatar and your Twitter handle!
Please note that I get a high volume of guest posts in regularly, so it may take just a bit to get back to you as I have to do a thorough quality check before I commit to posting any on my site.
Guest posts are published every Wednesday in the order that they are received, unless they are about time-sensitive topics.
Also, I take commenting and discussion on posts very seriously. So much so that I have implemented a new policy that if guest bloggers do not come to interact with commenters, they will lose their link!
To read more about this new policy, check out my post: No Discussion, No Link.

LinkedIn for Bloggers

A few months ago, I wrote a comprehensive guide on LinkedIn for bloggers. Since I've gotten a lot of new subscribers since then, I thought I'd dig this one back out of the archives.
Why LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a great network if you want to take your blogging authority to the next level. If you've been looking at making money online in any shape, form, or fashion, then you will want to brand yourself as a professional. LinkedIn, the largest social network for professionals, is just the place to do it.
Want to see a good blend of mixing your current job with your blogging expertise? Check out my LinkedIn profile for an example - my current positions include being a web strategist at my day job, a blogging tips expert on Kikolani, a freelance writer at KristiHines.com (my freelance writing portfolio), and guest contributor at Social Media Examiner.
What Can You Do on LinkedIn?
My quick suggestions if you're just starting out or not sure what to do after signing up include:

Fill out your profile. If you want to focus it just on your blogging, just use your blog(s) as your business and make up a title for yourself like Founder, Writer, Niche Expert at Your Blog.
Join some groups. There are lots of great groups on LinkedIn for bloggers, including general blogging groups (including my group for Women in Blogging), social media, and lots of niche interest groups for professionals including photography, tennis, and beyond.
Jump into the QandA. Tired of the immaturity on Yahoo Answers? Why not help build your authority in your niche by helping professionals in the Answers area of LinkedIn. If you take the time, you could become an expert in your niche, such as Blogging.

Want to Know More?
Be sure to check out my post for the basics of using LinkedIn for blogging. Also, don't miss Lewis Howes' course on LinkedIn.

It was the inspiration behind my push for more bloggers to join LinkedIn as it can teach you how to really get the most out LinkedIn for more traffic generation, leads for your product or service, and building your authority so you can be the expert everyone looks up to!
Also, as a disclaimer, yes I'm an affiliate of the course. But I think you will want to be one too once you take it and learn all the things I did about LinkedIn.
I know that, for me, implementing strategies mentioned in this course has led to more sales of my eBook and freelance writing opportunities, as well as some nice traffic to my blog.
So give it a try - it's only $97 (a great price for the information you're getting) and comes with a 100% money back guarantee! If nothing else, at least visit the page and listen to the video by Lewis Howes and see just how passionate he is about the value everyone can get from LinkedIn!

Welcome New Subscribers!

As always, a big hearty welcome to new subscribers to the Kikolani mailing list!
You can expect a newsletter in your inbox periodically with the latest updates from Kikolani as well as some useful tips for bloggers and social media enthusiasts.
If things go silent for awhile, never fear. I'm probably hard at work on a new blogging project! ;)

CommentLuv 2.9

Even if you haven't installed CommentLuv 2.9 on your own blog yet (self-hosted WordPress users only), you have probably started seeing it more and more out in the commenting wild. So just in case you missed my post last week about what's new, I thought I'd give you the low down for weekend reading.
Why CommentLuv
Why do I love CommentLuv so much? I think it benefits blog owners by helping them see what their readers are writing about right now, as well as makes legitimate comments stand out in the spam filter.
For commenters, it helps them share their latest post which is likely to garner more clicks than just a link to their website.
And for your average blog reader, it will help them discover new resources on similar topics as commenters generally comment on the same types of posts that they write.
New Features For Commenters
As a blog commenter who loves using CommentLuv blogs to get a backlink to your latest post, you have probably noticed a few key differences in the latest version of CommentLuv.
You only get the latest posts from the URL entered in the website field of the comments.
If you haven't ever used the default links or added additional URLs to your Comluv account before, then that's probably not out of the norm. But for those who have, you might have been missing the latest links from all of your accounts or your default links. These features may return when the premium version of CommentLuv comes out, but for now, they are sadly gone.
You only get one latest post from the URL entered in the website field of the comments.
The newest version of CommentLuv no longer pulls from the information you entered in your Comluv account. Instead, it is up to every blog owner whether they will give you your latest 10 blog post links in the dropdown or whether they will make you subscribe to their blog for those links.
If you're ok with only getting your latest link, it's not an issue. But if you want your latest 10 posts to choose from on a site you are commenting on, blog owners may require you to register with their blog via the WordPress registration form. You'll see a message in the CommentLuv dropdown if they have this setup. If, for some reason there isn't a link to their registration form, you can generally find it by adding /wp-login.php?action=register after their domain.
How is Kikolani setup?
So do I make you register for your last 10 links? Of course not! I'm not a fan of having a huge database of users or making commenters have to register as I'm not a fan of registration for much of anything, let alone comments.
New Features For Blog Owners
As a blog owner, you have the choice to decide whether you want to make commenters register in your WordPress installation to get their latest 10 blog post links, and if those links will be dofollow or nofollow.
What's the benefit of having commenters register for your site? Just for registration sake, not much. But there are plugins available that will give registrants the option to subscribe to your mailing list simultaneously, which will be a big draw for Internet marketers.
What is the majority doing? So far, I have seen most sites just freely giving the 10 latest post links as I have been making commenting rounds. There are a few sites that have only one latest link available, but those did not offer an option to register, so apparently some blog owners have either not changed their settings or decided against giving commenters a choice.
I personally think that the choice for the latest 10 should be allowed so that commenters can leave a link in their comments that goes well with your post, making it more valuable to your other commenters and blog readers. But that's just me!
Learn More
Be sure to check out my post for more details, including how to install CommentLuv and what settings you will want to be aware of. If you're ready to jump into installing CommentLuv 2.9 on your blog, you can download it for free here after entering your email address.

Want Someone Else to Build Your Mailing List for You?

Chances are, you've probably heard about a new plugin for WordPress called List Eruption as it's getting some great hype on its official launch date. It was created by a good friend of mine, Mark Thompson of Stay on Search (one of the sites I regularly contribute to).
In a nutshell, this plugin allows you to get other people to want to help you grow your own mailing list by giving people a unique referral link to give to their followers to sign up for your list.
Why would someone want to help you build your mailing list? Incentives, of course. Some great ones could include:

Once someone has referred 10 new subscribers to your list, they will get a free copy of your eBook (one that you sell, not one that you normally give away for free).

Whoever refers 100 people to your list first will win a free iPad.

Anyone who refers someone to your email list will receive great blogging karma.

Let's say you and several other people are starting a newsletter mailing list, and you want to know which person is referring the most subscribers to your collaborative effort. Maybe the people who refer the most subscribers will get the highest percentage of any earnings from the list.
The options are really endless on ways you can motivate others to want to help you build your list. You just have to find the right incentives for your audience!

Does it work? Of course! Several months ago, I helped someone else get subscribers to a free online marketing course. The deal was, once I made 10 referrals, I received a copy of their eBook that normally cost $47.

I received an email each time someone signed up for my list, and when I hit 10 referrals, my eBook was sent to me automatically.

So be sure, if you're building an email list and looking for ways to boost your subscribers to check out List Eruption today and get it for the low price of $47 - a discounted price that is only good for the next seven days! It works with Aweber, MailChimp, Constant Contact, iContact, and Get Response.

Also, if you're not sure why you should have a mailing list, be sure to check out my post on why bloggers should have a list. It's not all about making money online!
