CEO/Founder La Casa Hermosa Winning Style Made Simple As a fashion stylist and published author on beauty and fashion articles, with so many winning clients in the pageant industry, I am often asked what comprises a 'winning' look. The wardrobe styling solution does differ for each individual, and we work tirelessly at La Casa Hermosa to get the right gown on each client, but a winning look for anyone will share some elements in common. This past year I was invited to work as an Official Stylist for the Miss Teen USA Fantasy Camp in the Bahamas, and my fashion challenge to each camper was to create a winning look for life, using the principles below. Style starts within. Who you are is unique, individual, and should be reflected as such in your wardrobe. Copying others is not a winning attribute. Copying sends a message that you lack the self-confidence to express yourself fully, so first, have the confidence to create your OWN look. Do your fashion homework. If it doesn't win you over in the first few seconds, it won't win over your date, fashion critics, a new boss, or pageant judges either! Flattering clothing will immediately empower you. Whether your body is tall, short, narrow, or wide, it's critical to find garments constructed to flatter your assets and mask your flaws. Discover your body type, and refuse to buy garments that do not flatter your figure. Color your world. Factoring in your skin color, eye color, and hair color adds another layer of style-complexity and also narrows your choices, but is a must-do on the winner's checklist. A stylistic rule states that anyone can wear any color, it's just the particular shade of color that is important. I agree, however, I advise you to select the exact shade you wear better than anyone else which is key to standing out on stage. You never want to stand next to someone wearing the same color, true, but it's far worse if they wear it better than you! Be consistent. Consistency is another key component. What you wear throughout your pageant competition, whether it is casual or competitive attire, should be consistent with how you want others to perceive you. Double check your wardrobe to determine if it is 'on message' or is inconsistent. For example, if you are all girly-girl in a pink ruffled interview dress, an edgy evening gown in solid black sends a mixed message. Nix the mixed. Conquer character. World-class winners know the most important thing you wear is a winning attitude. Consideration for others, kindness, integrity, and character all count, and should be worn with pride. Wardrobe is the most important facet of packaging, but character matters most in the final analysis. I've never seen a dress win a crown, without a girl standing in it. Make sure when that girl is you, you are dressed a winner from the inside out. No matter what your age, your goals or aspirations, your wardrobe packaging is the message you send to the world, about who you ARE and where you are going. As Cinderella discovered, when the shoe fits, life can be magical! But if Cinderella hadn't made that great first impression in her ball gown - thanks to her stylist Fairy Godmother - do you really think Prince Charming would have traveled the kingdom to find her?
