Write a Letter

Hello !

The book, Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place by
Terry Tempest Williams is like a journal in that it shares a story and
ads personal insight. It can be considered a story about her mother's
battle with cancer. In the book, her mother writes a heartfelt letter,
sending sympathy and empathy to a friend that had just had a brain
tumor operation. Terry then writes about the power of letters:

The
physical contact of pen to paper, the time set aside to focus thoughts,
the folding of the paper into the envelope, licking it closed,
addressing it, a chosen stamp, and then the release of the letter to
the mailbox - are all acts of tenderness.
And it doesn't stop
there. Our correspondences have wings - paper birds that fly from my
house to yours - flocks of ideas crisscrossing the country. Once
opened, a connection is made. We are not alone in the world.

Our
challenge to you today is to take time this week to write a letter to a
friend. You never know who needs the message that they are not alone.

Do What is Right

Hello !

The other day, I was faced with a difficult
decision. It seemed that any action I took would end up being
problematic. The choice to just not do anything and hope the situation
would simply go away was very tempting. As I struggled with the best
path to take, the words of a song came to mind:

Do what is right, let the consequence follow.

As
we are faced with decisions in our lives, we should always try to
figure out what is right. Then do it! The consequences will stand for
themselves in the end. Living the Golden Rule is a no-brainer if we are
always thinking about doing the right thing.

How Are You?

Hello !

How are you?
Have you ever been asked this question? Have you
ever asked it? Have you ever paid attention to the responses to this
question, either from you or from others you have asked? For the most
part it is answered with a simple Fine. How are you? The question has
become more of a ceremonial greeting in that by asking the question, we
don't really expect a real answer, nor, most often, do we even care for
one.
When people ask me that question I usually throw them off
with my reply. I come back with this: So dang good I can hardly stand
it!
I have been laughed at, stared at, and even been accused a liar!
This
is the lesson I have learned from giving this response: When I give a
real answer, it opens up a connection that the person asking did not
expect. This connection, even with strangers, has always brought
smiles, laughs, and even conversations. Connecting with others is very
important to living the Golden Rule.
As an afterthought, when
you ask someone how they are doing, ask as if you sincerely care to
hear their response. If they ask how you're doing, give them the ole,
So Dang Good answer! See what it does. You will be surprised at the
warmth it creates between two humans.

Halloween Kindness

Hello !

Today I want to share something that happened a few years ago on
Halloween. I was home on duty at the door. The little goblin, princess,
vampire, and ghost traffic was just becoming steady. You know, the time
that the door barely closes before the bell rings again followed by an
anxious trick or treat! said more like a demand than a simple
question. The grocery bags and pillow cases were about half
full of candy ranging from sugar flavored candy corn to packets of soon
to be warm apple cider.
We all know that Halloween is a night
full of pranks, some harmless, others that can seem to scar for life.
That Halloween I saw something just plain rude. A group of older
kids, you know, the kids that don't stop their candy hunt until way
after the ABC Halloween special is over. Or until the bag of candy is
too heavy to carry to the next door. Those kids. Well, I saw a group of
them, right as I opened the door in reply to the doorbell, corner a
little pumpkin clad girl and sharp fanged boy that were too young and
too little to protect themselves. The bullies demanded that they give
up their candy. Before even giving them a chance to submit, the bullies
grabbed the bags and began to run. I yelled after them, but it was too
late. They were halfway around the block.
Shocked after what I
had just seen, I turned my attention to the crying duo that had just
lost all of their candy. Another older kid had watched the assault
and, like me, was too late to do something about the thieves. I watched
this boy walk over to the shocked and crushed kids. Then he performed a
simple gesture that meant the world to those kids. He told them not to
worry about what had happened. That those kids were just bullies and
didn't know how to be nice. Then he handed them his candy and told them
to split it evenly. The sad faces and tears changed immediately into
smiles.
I was so impressed by that young hero. He really knew how to treat strangers. He knew how to live the Golden Rule.

Competitors or Colleagues

Hello !

Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place shares the wonderful personality
of her Father, one of Haarlem's watchmakers. Corrie says this of him:
Father
was as innocent of business know-how as his father had been before him.
He would work for days on a difficult repair problem and then forget to
send a bill. The more rare and expensive a watch, the less he was able
to think of it in terms of money. 'A man should pay for the privilege
of working on such a watch!' he would say.
Her father refused
the term competitors when talking about other watchmakers. He
preferred the term colleagues. One colleague would drop by every
now and then to compare prices so that he could undersell them.
Father's face would light up with a kind of pleased surprise as it
always did on those rare occasions when he thought about the business
side of watchmaking. 'But Corrie, people will save money when they buy
from him!' And then he would always add, 'I wonder how he does it.
We
share this example not as a business strategy, but as an example of a
wonderful attitude and bright personality. Corrie's Father loved life
and loved what he did, despite other peoples success--in fact he even
rejoiced in their success! May we always have a positive attitude and
remember the Golden Rule.

I'm So Happy for You!

Hello !

Way to go!
You did it!
You deserved it!
You are awesome!

How hard is it to genuinely be happy for the success of others? (The key word here is genuinely.)

I have seen many instances, and heard of many more, in which because someone excelled at something, they were shunned, talked negatively about, and were outright treated rudely. Have you ever found yourself on either end of that situation?

I remember hearing of a young girl who had many opportunities in modeling, commercials, and television. She was a beautiful, bright, intelligent child, with so much talent. However, hurtful gossip got back to the mother of this girl - gossip that came from jealous friends who instead should have been happy and supportive.

What ever happened to being genuinely happy for other people's success? Do their achievements and successes somehow make ours smaller or lesser? Of course not! When it comes down to it, we can either share in the joy of others' success, or we can choose to be unhappy for them. But it doesn't make much sense to choose unhappiness over joy.

Let us be happy for the success of others - genuinely happy. It is what The Golden Rule is all about: finding happiness in our actions towards others.

The Pump

Hello !

There is a story about a man who got stranded in a ghost town in some desert and came upon an old pump. He was close to death when he found the pump but no matter how hard or how fast he moved the handle no water came out. He was just about to give up when he noticed an old can with a paper carefully rolled up inscribed was a hand written note. Here is what the note said:

The pump is ok.
The leather gets dry, and she's got to be primed.
There's a jug of water under the rock here.
Pour it all in . . . and pump like crazy, and you'll get water.
She ain't never run dry, but don't go drinking any first, there ain't enough.
Just prime the pump.
And when you're watered up . . . fill the jug and put her back again.
                  J.P. Prospectin ' '32
He found the rock and the jug under it. when he opened the cork there was cool refreshing wet water! As he pulled the jug to his parched, cracked, bleeding lip the voice came as out of the dust

. . . don't go drinkin' any first, there ain't enough.
What would you do? Would you drink the water and save your life? Or would you trust the ' '32 Prospector and prime the pump?
Sometimes in our life we are thirsty and close to becoming extinct. Do we stop and think about Priming the Pump? or do we take what is there with no thought of others or with no faith that the well is not dry?
At the end of this story the man thinks this thought.

Comes a day, at one time or another, when a man's got to believe in something outside himself.

We believe that living The Golden Rule is believing in something outside of ourselves. We hope you join us in Priming The Pump so that the well of human kindness and decency flows freely for all to enjoy.

The Highway

Hello !

Here is a fable that we think is worth a read. Even if you have read it before it brings out a very important precept for those who want to live the Golden Rule.

Once a king had a great highway built for the members of his kingdom. After it was completed but before it was opened to the public, the king decided to have a contest. He invited as many as desired to participate. Their challenge was to see who could travel the highway the best. On the day of the contest, the people came. Some of them had fine chariots. Some had fine clothing, fine hairdos, or great food. Some young men came in their track clothes and ran along the highway. People traveled the highway all day, but each one, when he arrived at the end, complained to the king that there was a large pile of rocks and debris left on the road at one spot and that this got in their way and hindered their travel.

At the end of the day, a lone traveler crossed the finish line warily and walked over to the king. He was tired and dirty, but he addressed the king with great respect and handed him a bag of gold.

He explained, I stopped along the way to clear a pile of rocks and debris that was blocking the road. This bag of gold was under it all. I want you to return it to its rightful owner.

The king replied, You are the rightful owner.

The traveler replied, Oh no, this is not mine. I've never known such money.
Oh yes, said the king, you've earned this gold, for you won my contest. He who travels the road best is he who makes the road smoother for those who will follow.

Our life is a contest. If we make the road smoother for those who are traveling with us, we win the contest. By living The Golden Rule- showing respect to others, loving those we come in contact with, and truly treating others the we would want to be treated, we are truly champions and we travel the road of life the best!

The Sin of Omission

Hello !

Here is a poem that when you read it think about living The Golden Rule it might give you a different perspective. Think about what you have done today or in days past, you just might change what you are going to do with the rest of today and with your tomorrows.

The Sin of Omission by Margaret E. Sangster

It isn't the thing you do, dear
It's the thing you leave undone
That gives you a bit of a heartache
At setting of the sun.
The tender word forgotten
The letter you did not write,
The flowers you did not send, dear,
Are you haunting ghosts at night.

The stone you might have lifted
Out of a brother's way;
The bit of heartsome counsel
You were hurried too much to say;
The loving touch of the hand, dear
The gentle, winning tone
Which you had no time not thought for
With troubles enough of your own.

Those little acts of kindness
So easily out of mind,
Those chances to be angles
Which we poor mortals find
They come in night and silence,
Each sad,reproachful wraith,
When hope is faint and flagging,
And a chill has fallen on faith

For life is all too short, dear
And sorrow is all too great,
To Suffer our slow compassion
That tarries until too late;
And it isn't the thing you do, dear
It's the thing you leave undone
Which gives you a bit of a heartache
At the setting of the Sun.

Golden Rule in Politics

Hello !

I remembered a song that Senator Orrin Hatch wrote that was titled Everyday Heroes. I looked it up on the internet yesterday and could only find the lyrics for a few lines but this is what I found.

Some people have helping hands that go a second mile.
They're willing to love and lift a brother for a while.
Everyday Heroes live in every neighborhood.
Everyday Heroes, helping in the way a neighbor should.
Giving just a little time; sharing just a little love.
God bless each one of those everyday heroes.

I hope we can be Everyday Heroes by being the neighbor that helps and loves by sharing our time with the neighbors we come in contact with.
