Excuse me, Your Genius is Waiting - How To Get Out of Your Own Way
By Otto Siegel

Have you ever worked to synthesize something, like an article or a
painting, but you find yourself fidgeting and getting in your own
way. You know, the nagging little "inner critic" that feeds you
lines of "I can't" and "I'm not good enough." The more you sit and
listen to that voice, the more you get wrapped up in your own crap
until your thoughts are spiraling you down into the deepest pit and
you're sure there is no way out.

"I just need to get out of my own way." It's a line that's
frequently used as a joke about ourselves, but it's so true for the
majority of us that we almost always laugh. We get in our own way
all the time and it shows up in many different ways. "How else do
we get in our own way?" you might ask. You create a small game; the
small game of life. It might be the game of safety; the game of
security; the game that doesn't ask you to push beyond the comfort
zone or require you to become more than what you are right now.
Perhaps it is the game of the ego and image where you get lots of
validation because you are living what society views as successful,
but not who you really are. EXCUSE ME, your Genius is waiting. The
bigger game is waiting. Could you imagine if Gandhi or Martin
Luther King decided to stay playing a small game? Where would we
be? No, really, where would we be? Gandhi gained India's
independence and Martin Luther King fathered civil rights. They
both made a huge impact on the world we see today. Now before you
rush to, "Oh no. Oh no, I'm not a Gandhi and I could never be one,"
let me assure you that your natural passion, your talent, your
Genius is unique to you. How it shows up in the world, is also
unique to you. I know for a fact that too big of a picture can
cause you to freeze like a deer in the headlights and shuts down
any possibility for action. The game you create will be just that,
yours to create, hand in hand with your Genius. When you begin to
live your Genius, the bigger game moves you away from "numbing out"
of life. Yes, the escape routes. There are so many . . . video
games, gambling, television or my favorite (because you look so
needed), the busy, busy, busy, where you can't say "no" and it's
all just a distraction. "How would I ever have time to discover my
Genius? I'm far too busy!" Numbing out closes off the reality that
your Genius is waiting and moving farther and farther from view.

Perhaps 911 left the mark in our hearts that there should be more
to life than the small game. In an instant, the view of daily
safety and security was shattered. We all felt loss beyond the
crushing blow of loosing family and friends that did not survive.
We lost the belief that we are safe. I wonder if this is why many
people are exploring the idea of living a bigger game. However,
there is a big difference between exploring and commitment. So, how
DO you get out of your own way? How do move into a bigger game? You
find your Genius. You get out of your own way because you live your
Genius. Think about it. If your life was bigger than the ordinary .
. . it was the EXTRAORDINARY, wouldn't you be excited to live that
life and wouldn't you make sure that nothing got in your way,
including you?
