Let's start with a few FACTS about SOY:
-
Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth.
-
Soy phyto-estrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.
-
Soy phyto-estrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
-
Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body's requirement for B12.
-
Soy foods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D.
-
Fragile proteins are denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein.
-
Processing of soy protein results in the formation of toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines.
-
Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods.
-
Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys.
Soy as the all-natural solution for osteoporosis? The latest ploy of the soy industry is to fan women's fears about bone loss and distract them from recent news that soy does not prevent heart disease, and that it worsens cardiomyopathy, impairs fertility and may increase breast cancer risk. Not too long ago researchers concluded in the Journal of Nutrition, "These data indicate that when soy protein is substituted for meat protein, there is an acute decline in dietary calcium bioavailability."
I hope this answers it for you when it comes to SOY as a protein substitute or food item. I do not suggest eating tons of soy or hardly any soy at all if possible. Soy milk and soy formulas for children are quite dangerous, inhibit other key vitamins from working properly (D3 and B6, etc.) and have been proven to cause hyperactivity in children and neurological problems in adults.
The best protein supplement that we suggest is: whey protein. When it comes to protein supplementation now, whey is king. It has pushed aside milk based protein supplements, egg proteins, and soy proteins to totally dominate the field. Why? Quite simply is has an extremely high biological value ranging from 90-100 for whey concentrate and from 100-150 for whey isolate. It's also high in the branch chain amino acids and is quickly absorbed by the human body.
Interestingly enough, your body does not actually utilize protein directly when you eat it. When you consume protein, for the most part, the body breaks it down into its constituent amino acids, absorbs those amino acids through the intestinal tract, and then using genetic instructions encoded in your body, reassembles them into the proteins it needs to perform all its functions.
Whenever the body assembles a protein from amino acids, when it builds muscle for example, it needs a variety of amino acids to complete the process. Some of these amino acids may be produced in the body itself. Others may come from dietary sources. But nine amino acids can only come from dietary sources because your body cannot produce them no matter what you eat. These nine are considered essential, not because they're more important, but again because your body cannot manufacture them and therefore they must be part of your diet on a regular basis. These include:
- Phenylalanine
- Valine
- Threonine
- Tryptophan
- Isoleucine
- Methionine
- Leucine
- Lysine
- Histidine (your body can manufacture histidine, but usually not in sufficient amounts)
If your diet is chronically deficient in any one of the essential amino acids, the building of protein in the body stops. Without correct amino acids your body cannot use calcium properly...
Our suggestion: eat plenty of protein from good organic sources of meat, chicken, vegetables and supplement with a good whey protein mix (can be found at any good health food store). For those that just can't or won't do that then supplementing with a
high quality AMINO ACID supplement is VITAL. You can see our brand new product called: BUILDER(TM) - a comprehensive amino acid supplement that is terrific for those with digestive difficulties!
