Empty Nest Comfort Eating?
Did your youngest just leave home? Wow, it's SUCH a perfect time to go all-organic, exercise and finally focus on taking care of yourself.
But...yet you might find yourself longing for comfort foods, even misting up at that box of mac and cheese that you weren't very interesting in before. What's going on??
Give yourself some time. Really. It's a major shift in your life. Allow it to rock you for a while. The only real deadline is that it would be nice to regain your balance before the holidays throw you off again.
Our emotions are inextricably connected to our food. I give myself 5 to 7 days to react food-wise to something big. If you restrict and fight with emotional cravings following a big emotional event, you can actually prolong the process. Eating is sometimes THE WAY we process emotions. It's not wrong. It's just something to be aware of.
One way to minimize the impact of emotional eating is to continue to eat A LOT of vegetables and drink water in between your comfort food. You can also try to make healthier versions of your comfort food, with whole grains and high quality ingredients. Focus on putting good stuff IN rather than restricting the "bad" food.
Your cravings will wane when your emotions wane. Allowing yourself to feel is quickest way through, so notice if you are eating to numb yourself.
Then just keep drinking water, walking, eating your greens and nourishing yourself with the fun in your life. And maybe learning how to text might be a way to stay in contact with your baby who flew the nest. it's not THAT hard. Really!
Next month we'll talk about how to get extra-balanced before the holidays hit, so we can ride the roller coaster and come off unscathed!

Help get junk-food marketing out of schools!
Please
help us to get junk-food marketing out of schools! While 15 companies
have agreed to limit some food advertising in elementary schools
through the Council of Better Business Bureaus' Children's Food and
Beverage Advertising Initiative, the CFBAI's elementary school
advertising principles fall far short of effectively limiting the junk food marketed and sold to children in school.

Autumn Wild Rice Salad
1 cup dry Wild Rice Blend
1 Large or 2 medium Onion
¾ cup currants
¾ cup pecans toasted and chopped
1 head Broccoli Rabe or Broccoli, trimmed and chopped into bite size pieces
15 oz can Chic Peas rinsed and drained
10 TBSP Olive Oil
Lemon Juice
Sea Salt
1. Soak rice for several hours or rinse in a grain strainer
2. Cook Rice: Bring rice and cups of water (with a splash of oil to prevent sticking) to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 35 minutes.
3. Caramelize Onions: in a large skillet on medium high, heat 2 TBSP Olive oil. Add onions and allow them to cook for a few minutes until translucent without stirring. When translucent, lower heat to a simmer, partially cover and cook for another 15-20 minutes, adding small amounts of water as necessary to prevent from burning & sticking
4. Steam Broccoli Rabe: Bring 1-2 inches of water to a boil in a large pot with a steamer basket. Add Broccoli Rabe, cover and stem for 2-3 minutes. Remove when done and allow any excess water to drain
5. Toast Pecans: In the toaster oven set to 300 degrees for 10-15 minutes or on the stove top in a heavy skillet on medium high heat. Shake the nuts and keep them moving like you would do with popcorn. They should just turn a light golden
6. In a large bowl combine rice, broccoli rabe, onions, currants, pecans and chic peas. Season with Olive oil (about 6-8 TBSP) and sea salt.
Extra seasoning: add lemon, cider or balsamic vinegar
