Mind Matters

How we use our minds creates or destroys our health and well-being. The difference is perspective. We'll explore "mind" in this issue, how it relates to the body, and offer a few tips on how to make you the guru of your life.

I hope you enjoy it.

PS. Sharyn Abbot has contributed a brief excerpt from her new book is this issue. It's called "Create Your Own Reality" and really demonstrates someone who chose to use her mind as a healer. You can order it on www.createyours2.com/bonuses.html

PPS. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I find this Monty Python YouTube video to be such a pick me up, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life":

 Mind Matters

If you've been feeling stuck in any way, it's probably just old habits of mind and body that are holding you back...patterns below your conscious awareness. Whether you want to increase your income, lose weight, reduce stress, attract a love mate, sleep better or improve your overall health and performance, releasing old, non-supportive patterns and replacing them with new, enriching, empowering ones can be the most effective means of achieving your goals and fulfilling your dreams. Best of all, especially with tools like self-hypnosis, you are in the driver seat. The is how you might become your own guru: "Guru U"!

Unfortunately, most people only know of hypnosis through watching a stage show for entertainment. While this shows the power of the hypnotic state under extremely narrow conditions, it has nothing whatsoever to do with self-hypnosis or therapeutic hypnosis, whose sole purpose is empowering the individual with his or her own creative abilities.

Why is the hypnotic state so powerful and effective? Because it accesses the normally untapped subconscious mind, which is where all the unconscious patterns and habits reside. We literally use just the tip of the iceberg of our potential when we rely only on our conscious, analytical minds (see www.intendbalance.com/mindberg.html). Unfortunately, this is just what most people do, unwittingly limiting themselves.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is simply an altered state of mind characterized by high suggestibility, either to yourself, in the case of self-hypnosis, or in cooperation with a clinical hypnotist who understands this remarkable process and who is also in tune with your goals and desires.

A hypnotist is a master of listening and observation combined with skills that help you access the powers hidden in your subconscious mind.

A hypnotist is like a guide in the fertile landscapes of your deep mind that helps you plant seeds that inevitably grow into full fledged achievement of nearly any goal or objective. This can be inner levels of happiness, pleasure, will power, relaxation, weight loss, deep sleep or even cellular reprogramming. Or it can be the will to learn and the hunger for knowledge to attain virtually any external goal or financial accomplishment.

Take a Global Approach to Guru U.

One of the best ways to make you the GURU of your life is to take a holistic approach to your mind-body desires and goals. In this way change becomes lasting and integral in your life with little or no effort. Take a global approach to your life by looking at all areas simultaneously: career, relationships, health, physical activity, sleep, financial challenges, etc. If you were to focus just on one area, perhaps weight loss, the results may not be as lasting or effective as including all areas of your life. In the case of weight loss, this inevitably affects and is affected by body image, emotional state, physical activity, stress and so on.

All things are connected in subtle ways that most people do not understand, which is why the most effective way to tap your creative abilities is by looking at your entire life and developing a multidimensional map of this territory. Self-hypnosis is, fundamentally, the creation of a super creative state that allows you to see things clearly while also giving you the opportunity to make changes at the deepest level possible. When I work with individuals, we discover these life connections under hypnosis, but then I teach clients self-hypnosis so that they can become the guru of their own lives.

To see how connected things are, especially in your own mind-body, try this fun experiment:

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

This will boggle your mind and your body. And you will keep trying at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can't.

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Why? Because your foot and your hand are part of the same neurobiological system that have "rules" of operation based on past conditioning. Some conditioning is good and needed, but how about conditioning that keeps you repeating the same old mistakes and creating the same old life you don't like?

Learning self-hypnosis is the most effective way to engage the power of your own mind to replace non-supportive mind-body patterns with ones that enhance your dreams and desires. But this is no longer a luxury. In today's demanding world, you must become "Guru U" now because...your mind matters!"

The Clinical Proof of the Power of Suggestion

Nearly every drug and medical devices on the market are tested against the power of your mind--the power of suggestion--otherwise known as the placebo effect. However, this was not always the case. Before 1963, drugs that were sold in the United States had to be proven safe, but they did not have to be proven effective. It was common to find many drugs on the market that claimed to be effective for a wide variety of health conditions without any proof that they actually worked. Then, in 1963 Congress enacted an amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act, which required drug manufacturers to actually prove that their products were both safe and effective.

It was common knowledge even then that the power of suggestion could heal a wide array of health disorders, so placebo-controlled clinical trials became the standard proof of effectiveness. This type of clinical trial intentionally obscures or "blinds" both the patient and the researcher to the nature of actual treatment. In other words, some patients receive the studied drug, some receive a dummy drug (the placebo) and some receive no treatment at all, and the doctor administering the treatment does not know which patient is in what group.

Without fail, the group that receives only the power of suggestion improves, often with remarkable results: 20%, 30%, 50% or more of the efficacy of treatment is often attributed to this amazing feature of our own minds. What is most astonishing, however, is that this great power to influence disease recovery is then fully discarded when it comes to helping the patient in clinical practice! And even worse, a doctor's well-intentioned prognosis can easily form an extremely effective negative suggestion that can make matters worse.

Of course you cannot patent or license someone's own healing capacity, so there is no economic incentive for the medical system to promote the power of suggestion and self-healing. This is why I encourage you to become "Guru U".

Excerpt from "Create Your Own Reality" by Sharyn Abbott

Create Your Own Reality
The Ancient Wisdom

. . . is an uncanny guide to help you shed the years of suppression, being misled or trying to deal with the circumstances of life that has appeared to hold you back from the miracles you deserve.

What will it take for you to make the necessary changes in your life? Will you hit rock bottom or lose everything you have before you let go of a life that doesn't serve you?

I've often pondered the difference between those who embrace their challenges and those who throw in the towel, or sadly, hide behind alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism. In many situations, they have inherited their reaction to stress. Those who have a family history of diabetes or alcoholism are more prone to respond to stress by drinking excessively and often are more likely to develop adult onset diabetes.

When we blame others for our lives we miss the point of the experience. Blame prevents us from gaining the benefit of the lesson.  When we blame, too often we have to go through the lesson repeatedly until we finally understand the full intention of the lesson The purpose in accepting the lesson lies in obtaining peace and harmony around that specific issue. We achieve this by forgiving rather than blaming.

No matter how difficult it may seem, forgiveness serves as the key to every lesson. Blame hold us hostage to the event. When we forgive we unlock the door and move through the lesson. Typically, we move on to a new lesson.
