News from Miss Best  April 2010

Hello lovely !

I hope this little update finds you well, and enjoying life. I  am personally very happy to smell Spring in the air. The snow has almost disappeared here near Stockholm, and it's just heaven to feel the temperature rise.

This time last year, Christoffer (my Love) and I moved into our house. So much has happened in the past year, including me finally taking the step to start my own company, and actually work with something I am passionate about that also helps people who want to reach a new level of well-being and happiness by combining great health with a lust for life and fantastic food.

One very exciting and recent development (for us) is our action to finally re-decorate our living room. We have been living with this ceiling-to-floor orange room for one year too long in my opinion, but we have to acknowledge that sometimes we can't achieve everything at once!

Finally getting round to it has really sparked some interesting developments in other parts of my life (and even different parts of our home), so do keep an eye out on my blog for my little tale, plus a yummy recipe inspired by the new and sexy colour of our walls. You can sign up for email notifications here so you don't miss my blog updates.

As I am sure some of you will know, living around a partially-decorated room while you work on it over a few weekends can be a little trying. Tools, paint brushes and sandpaper are scattered everywhere, while the furniture that was in that room now has to find a temporary home.

To ensure that I maintain my patience and enthusiasm with 'project de-orange living room', I have used a nice technique that I often teach others when making changes to their diet. Scroll down to find these five helpful tips!

You will also find a recipe for a yummy olive dip that we have been enjoying recently. Christoffer doesn't embrace raw food with quite the same passion as I do, so seeing his positive reaction when he tried this dip for the first time was, to me, an extra good seal of approval.

So, this is what I have in store for you this issue:

5 tips to help you achieve your new health goals

When you make positive changes to your diet (or indeed any part of your life), regardless of whether you want to eat more raw food, less meat, or just less junk food, it can be very helpful to use the following tips to help you keep on track.

1.Decide what you want to achieve with your new routine, or food choices: e.g. do you want:
- to loose weight?
- to have more energy?
- to heal from an illness?
- improve your skin?

2. Decide how will you measure your success, eg. you can fit into your clothes again, you have the energy to do fun things after your daily responsibilities have been fulfilled, your skin has cleared up etc.

3. Now imagine how it literally feels to achieve this goal. Imagine how it physically and emotionally feels to slip into you favourite pair of trousers again, or how more confident you feel for not having bad skin (not hiding behind your hair, for example), or the feeling you get when you have the energy to play with your kids with gusto after a full day's work and/or home-care, or how your lovely your body feels when you have the energy to dance the night away with your friends.

4. Now, with these feelings in mind, go get inspired! Talk to people who have similar experiences, read blogs and forums, and see what amazing things can be achieved. I always find 'before and after' pictures inspiring. You can also get inspiration from images. Cut out pictures of inspiring people or things and pin them up on your wall. E.g. a fit person running, or a healthy-looking family playing. Or look at pictures of delicious looking healthy food that you know you love, to keep you away from the food you want to avoid. Look at these pictures every day to remind yourself of what you are working towards. When sticking to your new plan feels tough, look at these images and remember how you imagine your success to feel (point 3).

5. Now, go get yourself some knowledge to support you on your journey to better health! Borrow or treat yourself to a recipe book, or go on a course to learn how to, for example, prepare the food that supports your health choices. Read inspiring and helpful blogs and books . You may even find it helpful to get a coach to support you on your journey.

Remember that once you bring these new changes to your life, it will be easier to maintain them. Good (and bad) habits take about 3 weeks to stick, so the more you keep to your goals, the more effortless is will feel!

I have personally used these tips at various times for cutting out gluten (to improve my skin), for eating more raw food (for general improved health and energy), and as I mentioned above for sticking to our plan to renovate our living room without going insane!

And to help you with point 5, here is a lovely, healthy tasty recipe for you!....

RECIPE
Olive Dip (Inspired by a recipe from Ani Phyo)

Serves 2-4

1 courgette (zucchini)
1/3 cup dry sunflower seeds
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
1/2 cup black olives* (remove the stones)
2 gloves of garlic, crushed, or finely chopped
juice of 1 lemon
3 tablespoons of cold-pressed sesame oil (*not* the roasted variety) or olive oil
1 tablespoons crushed coriander seeds or 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
Herb salt to taste
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast (not raw, but full of B-vitamins!)
Pinch of chili, to taste

Grind the seeds in a nut mill/coffee grinder. Chop the courgette (zucchini) into large chunks and process in a food processor. Add the olives and process some more. Add the rest of the ingredients (except the seeds), process again, and then add the seeds. Continue to process until smooth.

Delicious served with veggie sticks as a dip, or with the yummy crackers I blogged about last week. I broke the crackers into tortilla chip-sized pieces and scooped up the tasty dip. It is also very good spread on sandwiches or used to fill nori rolls.

*The olives that you find in stores aren't usually raw (*sigh!*) , so if you want raw olives you can find them at a very reasonable price here at The Fresh Network.
