What Do People REALLY Want?
2012-02-10 19:48:00-05

via myblogalicious.beblogalicious.com
I ask this question often because as a publicist working with authors, speakers, business owners and the like – they all yearn for something. Besides money…. it goes deeper than that.
I have a theory, which I test by people watching and social media observations, that people basically want four things:
1. Be known. They want fame. They want “rock star” fame actually. Most people dream of being recognized on the street and having fans ask for their autograph. They want their pictures on the front of magazines (not Tabloids) and seen on TV – and heard on radio. They secretly dream of being so famous that they can go anywhere and get “star” treatment.

The Story of Gospel Jazz artist, Kim Jordan, "Oh Happy Day"
2012-02-01 18:15:16.695-05Some people express love through words, touch, deeds, time or material gifts. But for some artists, such as Kim Jordan, love is expressed through her music. It’s electric and the epitome of passion. The keyboard is an extension of who she is – since she was five years old.
Jordan has an impressive body of work. Not only is she a top-flight pianist, she is a producer, arranger, songwriter, composer, vocalist, engineer and vocal coach.Oh Happy Day by Kim Jordan (mp3) Click to hear the new "Oh Happy Day" from the upcoming CD, "Uncommon" this year!

She has worked with Dru Hill, Taj Mahal, the Fantasy Band and many others. She has played alongside Roberta Flack, Vanessa Williams and Stevie Wonder. Jordan spent 12 years touring as arranger/musical director for Gil Scott-Heron.
In 1996, Jordan’s publishing company, Kimberlyn Music, received the prestigious ASCAP Music Award for writing and producing one of the top ten songs on Billboard’s charts, “We Must Be In Love.” The group Pure Soul recorded it. Artists such as Diane Reeves, Billy Childs, Kevin Eubanks, and Gerry Gonzales also perform her music.
"I am a funky keyboard artist, " says Jordan. "I'm a combination of gospel, with a Latin feel, some blues, even classical - a conglomeration of many tings."

Jordan, a native of Detroit, is a graduate of Howard University’s School of Fine Arts. Her talent, she says, is a family trait. "I was playing in a church since I was 5, in my daddy's church. My mother was a music teacher and she inspired me, pushed me. The other part was God-given; I would hear something and I could play it immediately. Other people would have to study it."
Her father, Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Jordan, is the President of the Council of Baptist Pastors, and pastor of Corinthian Baptist Church in Hamtramck. “Growing up in the church birthed my passion – and God has given the me vision for the type of music I’m to create.”
Her music is a mixture of original gospel music and secular jazz arrangements — she’s particularly noted for a jazz arrangement of the theme to “The Andy Griffith Show.” “The music that comes out of me is so eclectic and so all-over-the-place at times,” she said. “But it’s all who I am.”

Neither her jazz playing nor her gospel playing comes from the standard repertoires for the genre, Jordan said. “God has given me something so unique. Sometimes when I’m playing, I can’t sit down – I even get excited.” She plays all of her original music with fervor, compassion and confidence.
Jordan is, without a doubt, a refreshing and new jazz voice of the twenty-first century.

Five Things You Should Never Say When Pitching Your Book to a Publishers Or Agent
2012-01-31 23:29:00-05

Hear 2 PR Pros (Pam and Penny)==> http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-12384/TS-22743.mp3

(aka stuff publishers and agents hate)
If you're trying to get an agent or publisher for your book, there are a lot of things you need to do but also several you shouldn't. With writers conference season in full swing the opportunities to pitch your book to an agent/publisher abound. Here are a few things that will turn off a publisher or agent when you're pitching them!
1) Everyone loves my book: don't lead your pitch with this. In fact my recommendation is to leave this out of your pitch altogether. The definition of "everyone" is generally friends and family and while we love them for being a supportive bunch, when it comes to mainstream publishing they don't really count.
2) No one else has writing a book like this, it's never been done before. This is a big red flag to almost anyone in the book world, if it's never been done there might be a reason. They say there are no new ideas, certainly there are but publishing tends to fall into categories and if it's never been done, there might be a reason. If it really is a new idea, great! But do your research first before you toss out the "first book on this topic ever"
3) My book should be a movie or - my book is going to be the next bestseller. No one can predict a bestseller or, for that matter, what will become a blockbuster movie. I know if Hollywood and the New York publishing community could predict this, they've be in a much better financial state than they are now. The fact is, you might wish or hope that your book becomes the next classic but even you, the uber talented author can't predict this so don't pretend you can. It's a big eye-rolling turn off. Trust me.
4) Don't stalk your agent/publisher: Ok, now I don't mean stalking in the sense that Lifetime is considering making a movie out of you but I mean hounding, badgering, emailing daily, calling. You know, the super annoying stuff that will get you blacklisted off of every agent and publisher's list. Trust me, word will spread like wildfire if you're a pain in the you-know-what. It's also the quickest way to a rejection. Follow-up is ok, burning up the phone lines or hitting your send button obsessively isn't. Keep in mind that patience will often win this race. If you have found an agent that you trust, then trust them to do their job.
5) Not wanting to take feedback or reject professional advice: a good agent and/or publisher will offer you feedback on your book. Perhaps ways to enhance/correct it. Things you might want to consider adding to make it more commercially viable. Listen to these comments and learn from them, then, swallow your own opinions and consider incorporating them into your book. If you really have an objection that's another thing, but if pride is getting in your way then back off of the ego and see some of the points they're making as helpful and constructive. The writer sure to fail is the one who won't listen.
It's a competitive market out there and with New York publishing in trouble these days it seems more and more that authors need to know the do's and don'ts before you rush headlong into publishing. From our perspective, the last thing you want to do is come across as a know-it-all or an amateur. These are the things that will not only hurt your career, but delay the publication of your book as well.
