 Hi -
This week a blog post came together that has been on my mind for a few years. It formed based on seeing countless mobile marketing campaigns succeed and fail based on whether or not the creators of these campaigns followed basic principles of success in mobile.
It seemed like these strong principles should be shared in a format that made it perfectly clear that they are critical to the success of mobile marketing.
And, thus, the 10 Commandments of Mobile Marketing were written in stone. OK, well, not actual stone, but maybe even better. They are on the Internet and are available to one and all for the rest of time.
Here are the first three to wet your appetite:
1. Thou shall not send mobile spam.
2. Thou shall only cause mobile action with QR Codes.
3. Mobilize thy site.
Read the full set of 10 Commandments of Mobile Marketing here:

http://bit.ly/10cmm
While I love to get your thoughts via email (you can always reply back to your Mobile Marketing News Brief and it comes directly to me), I would love it even more if you would share your thoughts in the comments on the blog.
And, if you think the world would be a better place if all marketers followed these commandments, please share them with your social networks.

Hope you have a great weekend. I'll be working in my garden.
Here's to your mobile success,
Kim Dushinski

Tips, strategies and ideas for starting and/or growing your
mobile marketing business...

http://www.immbn.com/mmvs06

The first interview tomorrow with CK Kerley is about how
B2B marketers can use mobile marketing (and why you
should.)

The afternoon slot is an interview with Dan Hollings about
mobile marketing entrepreneurship. We'll talk pricing,
business models and ways to succeed in your business.

Wednesday we will hear from Dave Sheehan about how
he sent a text message and sold $120,000 worth of shoes.

Then Linda Daichendt will dive into how mobile marketing
is taking Michigan by storm, even in "this" economy.

Peggy Anne Salz and I will start off September discussing
the huge impact mobile marketing is making on retail and
what businesses can do about it.

Last, but not least, Roger Marquis will share with you tips
and strategies for using a very popular but often misused
mobile marketing tool - QR Codes (and other types of 2D
bar codes).

This is NOT a pitch event. This is a member benefit for
members of the International Mobile Marketing Business
Network. It is not too late to join the IMMBN and get all this
plus all the other IMMBN Member Benefits too.

Here's what one of the IMMBN members said about the
Mobile Marketing Virtual Summit:

"OMG! This is fantastic Kim. Thank you so much for this. I
have been watching all the buzz regarding the NY summit
and San Fran etc. wishing I could be there and now you've
given me the opportunity to be invited to the very best one

Hi  -

Are you up for a mobile marketing summer
challenge? I think this one will be fun. I'm ready to
see how much I can save with mobile
coupons...are you. Check out the challenge below.

Also, please join me on Wednesday for a free
webinar The Simple Secrets of Hand Picking First-
Rate Text Messaging Vendors. Details after the
challenge. It's going to be a great call!

MOBILE SUMMER CHALLENGE

Last year I issued a mobile marketing challenge for
the 4th of July - to participate in at least one mobile
marketing campaign. This year I am doing
something a little different.

Let's see how much money we can save using
mobile coupons next week. Starting on Monday,
June 13 and ending Sunday June 19, keep track of
how much you save (or could save) using mobile
coupons.

So, for example, if you received one of Redbox's
deals of the day (http://bit.ly/rb-deal) and got 50
cents off like I did, then start your tally with 50
cents. Maybe next up you'll get a coupon from Bath
and Body Works (http://bit.ly/bbw-mobile)
sometimes those are $10 off coupons! Or maybe
you are going to snag some discounted pizza from
Domino (http://bit.ly/d-mobile).

The point of this is not necessarily the challenge
itself, but to get your mind focused on what's going
on with mobile coupons. What is being offered? Is it
compelling enough to make you want to buy? Are
you signed up for enough mobile coupons to stay
active in this challenge?

Post your comments about this on the Mobile
Marketing Profits Facebook page. I'm curious to
see how much can be saved and who will rack up
the most savings (or potential savings). Remember
you don't have to buy everything that is offered to
you to count it in the challenge.

Hi  -
This past weekend I was in Missoula, Montana to
give a presentation for the Knight Digital Media
Center to newspapers and journalists about mobile
marketing. The presentation went great, but the
weekend was very disconcerting to me. Check out
my article below to find out why it upset me and
what I learned from it about mobile marketing.

Kim Dushinski
Mobile Marketing Expert
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
MY WEEKEND IN MONTANA
Our flight landed in Missoula on Saturday around
noon. My colleagues, who are techno-mobile-social
lovers like me, grabbed their cell phones and began
to check in on foursquare.
This seemed weird to me because my phone was
telling me that foursquare was down. No problem, I
thought, I'll just make a Facebook post instead. But
my Facebook wouldn't load either.
I went into denial that anything was wrong and
decided to send my daughter a picture or two of the
stuffed bears in the airport. (The taxidermy type,
not the stuffed animal type.) When she didn't
respond I sent her a text-only text message to ask
what she thought of the bears.
The moment she replied, "What bears?" I knew I
had trouble. I could text and I had bars to make
calls, but I did not have an Internet connection!
Once we arrived at the hotel I called Sprint and
found out the horrible news that they do not have
any data service in Missoula. I was going to have to
make it the whole weekend on calls and texts only.
First of all, thank goodness I had those features. I
found out on my way home that until recently Sprint
had no coverage there...at all. (I am freaking out a
little even thinking about what THAT would have
been like.)
In the remaining day and half that I was in Missoula
I came to realize exactly how much I rely on my
mobile phone for so much more than calling and
basic text messaging. So. Much. More.
I must have reached for my phone a dozen times
an hour. Thinking I would check my email or see
what was happening on Facebook or Twitter, I
would reach for my phone and realize that nothing
was coming in.
During the weekend I must have had at least 6
occasions where I was going to "look something
up" and couldn't. My daughter tried to send me
photos - which were delivered upon my arrival
back home in Denver.
In essence what happened is that my smartphone
was turned into a feature phone. I was transported
into the experience that the majority of consumers
have - calling and texting. JUST calling and texting.
And it made me see how totally irrelevant a ton of
mobile marketing is when that is all your phone will
do. I received my mobile coupons from Target,
which were useless because they are delivered on
a mobile website. I saw several QR codes in a
magazine that I couldn't even consider using.
I found that Twitter and Facebook were one way
communication tools. I could text in my status
updates but I couldn't see anyone else's, much less
click through to see what links they were
recommending I check out.
The two biggest lessons I learned from this are first
to check with your carrier before you travel to see
what your coverage will be like when you get there.
More importantly, remember that not everyone has
smartphones (despite what the techno news
sources imply) and that they need lowest common
denominator tools to interact with you and your
clients via mobile.
I have always been a fan of SMS, but having text
messaging as a key component in your mobile
strategy seems crucial to me now that I have lived
a weekend back in feature phone land.
It is safe to say that when I landed in Denver and
my phone regained its super powers I felt a huge
sense of relief. Huge. Relief.

Hi %$firstname$% -
Yesterday was the last day of the IMMBN Charter
membership. We had a LOT of new members join after
The Big 45 Call. If you are one of them, thanks and
welcome aboard. Watch your email next week for your
first official IMMBN Member email.
I'm proud to share that we have members from at least
7 countries around the world. It is truly an international
business network. I'm so thrilled!
And I have good news for you, especially if you missed
out on the charter membership. You may have noticed
that the video replay of The Big 45 Call never worked
yesterday after our awesome phone call. (That's
obviously not the good news and in fact was the one
low spot of my totally great 45th birthday.)
With help from my great video guy, Lou Bortone, I have
gotten the video replay to work. If you want to see it
click the replay link below.
I'm really sorry for inconvenience and to make up for it
I've decided to re-open the Charter membership for one
more day. (OK, that's the good news.)
If you want to WATCH the full replay of the Big 45 Call
the way it was actually presented, you can see it here:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ REPLAY LINK HERE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The replay is now actually available in video format as
well as the PDF and MP3 versions that did work
yesterday. You can watch and listen to it here:
http://www.immbn.com/244/the-big-45-call-replay/
~~~~~~~~~~
IMPORTANT:
Make sure you listen to it as soon as possible if you are
considering joining the IMMBN through the special
charter membership which is extended for ONE MORE
DAY since I had technical difficulties yesterday.
The highlight of the call, in my opinion, was the
announcement of three of our Expert Members.
They are Cindy Krum, Tomi Ahonen and Christina "CK"
Kerley. Watch the video to find out more about these
mobile marketing industry experts and what their role
will be in the IMMBN.
You can become a charter member here:
http://www.immbn.com/charter
Another day older and wiser about video,
Kim Dushinski
P.S.
I got emails from people in various time zones stating
that they missed the charter membership due to the
unfortunate timing of my emails and their time zone.
So, to accommodate all time zones fairly the charter
membership closes at midnight (Eastern Time) on
Sunday, January 9, 2011.
today. I really enjoyed it, I hope you did too! If you won
a present, you will be contacted so keep an eye in your
If you weren't able to attend the call, don't worry, the
replay is available. You can listen to it here:
IMPORTANT:
Make sure you listen to it as soon as possible to help
you make your decision about joining the IMMBN
through the special charter membership.
Pay attention to the big announcements and the
45 benefits of being in the IMMBN - I ran through those pretty quickly.
The replay is only 50 minutes so please make sure you
listen to the call before the charter membership closes
at midnight (Eastern time) TONIGHT.
You can become a charter member here:
http://www.immbn.com/charter
 I want to make sure you don't miss the
chance to lock in your low lifetime charter membership.
Remember, because you've been so loyal to me, this is
my special "thank you gift" for your continued support.
Thanks again for all the wonderful birthday wishes!
Yours truly,
Kim Dushinski
P.S.
The charter membership closes TONIGHT (Friday) at
midnight (Eastern time) so you can avoid paying higher
annual membership fees in the future by going to this
Hi  -
Check out the mobile marketing campaign I saw
last night while I was watching TV. In this issue of
the News Brief, I dissect the campaign to point out
the good, the bad and the beautiful.
Also, in this email I am inviting you to a free call I
am doing called the "Big 45." I hope you will join me
on Friday for it.
MOBILE IN THE WILD
The Biggest Loser started last night and of course I
was glued to the set. I find so many life lessons in
that show about what holds us back in life. But
that's another story...
Anyway, near the end of the show they were doing
their in-show infomercial for Brita water filters and
this time they had a mobile call to action. YES! That
makes me so happy.
Let's dissect this mobile campaign.
***
The MAGNETIC OFFER:
I'm honestly not exactly sure what the prize is, but
the text to win offer was something about a trip
somewhere. In fact TRIP was the keyword. The
short code is 47211 but I didn't catch it the first time
they showed it. Thank goodness I can rewind my
TV and I did to grab the short code.
The message I got back was:
Ur entered 2win, thx! Rply YES 2 signup 4 Brita
Alerts! Go2 http://filterforgood.com 4 more info. 3
msgs/mo. MsgandData rates may apply. Txt STOP
2quit. HELP 4info
My thoughts:
Lots in this message. Not sure whether I won or not
or when I will find out, so I'm a little disappointed.
(I'll be sure to let you know if I won the trip.) I
suggest if you use a contest as your magnetic offer
that you give people some indication of whether
they won or not or when they will find out.
Of course I did reply YES but only because I want
to know what they will send next. If I weren't doing
it for business reasons I would not sign up for Brita
Alerts. Not enough 'why' in it for me.
***
Here's what they did send next. It's the DOUBLE
OPT-IN part:
Thanks for helping to reduce bottled water waste!
Log on to http://filterforgood.com to take the pledge
and get a $5 Brita coupon. 3msgs/month max. Txt
STOP 2quit.
My thoughts:
I may now be on two lists from Brita with a
combined total of 6 messages per month. We'll
see. I am glad that they put the URL in both emails
and also gave a reason to go to that site in the
second email - the $5 coupon. I have no idea what
the pledge is or why I want to take it.
***
The MOBILE SITE CLICK THROUGH:
The URL in the texts leads to a fantastic mobile
site. (You can see it on your desktop by going to
http://m.brita.com) They did a great job by making
this a terrific mobile site. Well worth a look.
OK, so that is my Mobile in the Wild for the week.
What I want you to understand is that every single
mobile marketing campaign you see in the wild is a
way for you to learn more about mobile marketing.
What did a particular company do right? What did
they do wrong? How does it make you as a
consumer feel as you go through it?
This is why I say you should participate in every
single mobile marketing campaign you see in the
wild. I guess this means I will have to start
participating with QR Codes more often...OK, if I
have to I will.
^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
JOIN ME ON THE BIG 45 CALL:
As you already know, this week I launched the
brand new International Mobile Marketing Business
Network (IMMBN). You may even already be a
charter member. If so, I am so excited to have you
on board. (Keep reading, this message is for
charter members as well as those still considering
becoming one.)
A lot of people have called and e-mailed me with
questions about the IMMBN. I realize that you may
have your own questions too. Or you may still be
trying to figure out if the IMMBN is right for you and
your situation.
While I wish I could talk to each person individually,
I've decided to host a 45-minute call on Friday,
January 7th for everybody. You should know that
January 7 is a special day for me - it's my birthday
My 45th birthday to be exact. That's one of the
reasons this is the 'Big 45' call. You'll find out the
other reason in a minute.
Friday, January 7, 2011
9 AM Pac / 10 AM Mtn / 11 AM Ctrl / Noon Eastern
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, it WILL BE RECORDED and posted for you to
listen to later but if you can make it live you might
want to do it - since it is my birthday I am going to
give away some presents on the call.
During the 45-minute call I will:
^^^
Talk about my vision for the IMMBN (why it is a
business network and not a course) and how it
serves you and your needs.
^^^
I'll also share exclusively my Top 3 Predictions for
mobile marketing in 2011 to help you stay on top of
the trends.
^^^
I will also make a few big announcements about the
IMMBN.And I will share with you 45 Benefits of
being an IMMBN member. (Ta-dah! The other
reason it's the 'Big 45' call) I think you'll absolutely
love it!
Lastly, but I think more importantly, I'll answer as
many of your questions about the IMMBN as I can.
So, if you already have some questions, please
send them to me by replying to this email. You can
also get on the call Friday and ask me in person.

This weekend, people all over the world
counted down the seconds to the New Year and
a fresh start. We looked back at 2010 and
reflected on our regrets and successes. Then,
we glanced forward to the new year ahead of us
and what we'll make of it. Out with the old and in
with the new!
On that note, on Saturday, New Year's Day,
I semi-quietly launched the brand new
International Mobile Marketer Business Network
(IMMBN) to my colleagues, email subscribers
and customers. (My VIP list.)
You can see it here if you are curious:
http://www.immbn.com/charter
It was 'semi-quietly' because I did not issue
press releases, make big announcements to the
public or otherwise shout it from the rooftops. I
simply let my VIP list know about it.
If you're reading this right now that means
you're a VIP to me. I want to thank you for being
so important to me by giving you the first look at
the IMMBN and inviting you to be a charter
member.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is the IMMBN anyway?
It is a new business network created specifically
for mobile marketing entrepreneur and mobile
marketing vendors. If you want to know the full
scoop, please check out the site for all the
details. Be sure to see the FAQ page if you
have questions.
http://www.immbn.com/charter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is important for me that you know that
membership to the IMMBN will only be made
available to the public in March 2011 (at full
price). But I've reserved a special 2011 Charter
Membership spot in the IMMBN with your name
chiselled on it and I'm rolling out the red carpet
for you and letting you come first in line.
By joining the IMMBN within the next 4 days
before midnight (Eastern Time) on Friday the 7th
of January 2011, not only will you make my day
because it's my birthday on Friday (Yay!) but
you also lock in the lowest one-time Charter
Membership special that will ever be available.
What's great is that your Charter Membership
LOCKS IN FOR A LIFETIME. So when you
renew your membership next year and beyond,
it will renew at the special Charter Membership
rate for as long as you are an IMMBN Charter
Member.
Despite having launched on New Year's Day
when people are still in holiday mode, we've
already had an amazing response with lots of
people jumping on board the IMMBN Charter
Membership train before it leaves the station on
Friday at 12am - never to return.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Here are some of the exciting comments I got
from a few new Charter Members on our
FaceBook page:
Just joined IMMBN! Thank you Kim:)
I'm in! Thank You Kim, looking forward to all of
the possibilities and opportunities in the IMMBN
I'm in. This is going to be big
Hey Kim- You have created a lot of excitement
around IMMBN.. can't wait to see more!
http://www.facebook.com/IMMBN

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Make sure you don't get left behind. If you're
just one second late, it will be too late. You'll
have to wait until March and pay full price and
I'd really hate to have that happen to you if
you're reading this e-mail.
You can get all the details on great benefits of
the IMMBN Charter Membership by clicking this
link below:

, there are three types of people:
those who make things happen, those who
watch things happen and those who things are
always happening to. If you're in the second or
third group then this is probably not for you.
However, if you're a person who makes things
happen - then there's nothing stopping you
from reaching your goals with mobile marketing
in 2011!
In fact, if you're a person who makes things
happen and you want to start or grow with
mobile marketing in 2011 then you're ready for
mobile marketing at its best with the first of its
kind International Mobile Marketing Business
Network (IMMBN) and what it has to offer:

Thanks !

Have fun mobile marketing,

MOBILE QandA
Real questions I receive in my email...answered
here because other folks probably have the same
question.
Q:
There are loads of great .mobi domain names
available and I wanted to know if you thought
domain.mobi is the way most people are going or
are they using m.domain.com which I have also
seen?
A:
Actually, I predict that neither type of mobile URL
will be that important for long. While business really
MUST build a mobile specific site (more on this in a
minute), the domain that they put it on will start to
be less and less important because device
detection is getting better and better.
People will simply use one domain (domain.com)
and let the site serve them up the right site -
desktop or mobile. That's what device detection is.
Google will identify either .mobi or m.domain.com
as a mobile domain, so it doesn't really matter in
the mobile search world either.
The one thing I do see the mobile URL as good for
is marketing. Telling your customers you have a
mobile site is good marketing. Having a mobile
domain name makes it easier to market.
Example:
The Denver news channel 9 News markets their
mobile site by saying something like, "You can get
9News in the palm of your hand at m.9news.com"
and they show a mobile phone on the screen.
The reason that businesses must build a mobile
specific site is that even while using as
smartphone, people want a mobile specific site that
makes using the site easier via mobile.
Consumers want to find what they need quickly and
they want it easy to see. A full sized site on even
the largest smartphone screen is not easy to
navigate.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE IMMBN?
* * Survey takers still needed * *
Early in the first quarter of 2011 I will be opening
the doors to a new venture that I am hoping will be
very exciting to you. It is the International Mobile
Marketing Business Network.
The mission of the IMMBN is to help entrepreneurs
launch and build successful mobile marketing

connecting them with ethical mobile marketing
vendors.
And to help businesses around the world boost

with professional mobile marketing businesses to
implement their campaigns.
At this final stage of development, I want to make
sure that I am planning on the types of member
benefits that will be appealing to you. If you have
about 2 minutes to take a very simple five question
survey, I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks so much!

MOBILE QandA
Real questions I receive in my email...answered
here because other folks probably have the same
question.
Q:
I, for one, am not enthused with being bombarded
with a bunch of crap pizza coupons on a daily
basis. My email inbox is already clutter-filled. I
really don't want all that on my phone. Can mobile
marketing be more than this?
A:
I appreciate your insight and agree with you that
getting a bunch of unwanted coupons would be
horrible. And that is NOT what smart mobile
marketing is at all. Plus, text messaging is a 100%
permission-based marketing tool. No business
should ever send a text message that has not been
explicitly requested.
I teach mobile marketing consultants that the only
way to succeed with mobile marketing is to provide
RELEVANT VALUE to consumers.
Text messaging campaigns done properly are
welcomed by the consumers who have opted in to
them.

COME OVER TO FACEBOOK TO DISCUSS:
What text message campaigns are you opted into
that you find relevant and valuable?

Target vs. US Post Office
In a new column format where I compare two
companies' mobile marketing campaigns I pit the
US Post Office against Target. I think you'll find
how each entity used QR Codes quite fascinating.
Who do you think won this "vs" competition?
