Choose Choosing

Recently, a friend posted this quote on Facebook:

"If you're miserable, make a choice. If you're still miserable, you can choose again." -Martha Beck

I responded with "Choose Choosing!"

She wrote back with an old Simpsons' quote from Ralphie's valentine: "I choo-choo-choose you!"

Choosing is one of the exciting things about being a human. We don't have to rely on animal instincts to rule our lives. We can create our life with our choices. Wherever you are right this minute, all of your previous choices got you here. And if you don't like where you are, you can choose to move in a new direction.

It's important to remember that there is no such thing as a "right" choice or a "wrong" choice. If you're worried about making a "wrong" choice, you will become over-analytical and paralyzed with stress and fear. Every choice is different and could lead to different consequences, but you do your best with the information you have at that moment. Maybe a few days later, with more information, you would have made a different choice, but that doesn't make your initial choice "wrong." You do your best and choose every moment.

You can choose to go into work or take a sick day or quit your job.

You can choose to give your partner a kiss before you leave or you could slap them in the face.

You can choose to have coffee in the morning, or tea, or cocaine.

Some choices aren't logical or practical, but you still have that option. Even when you think you don't have any options, you're still choosing between the lesser of evils.

When you're stuck on a choice, remind yourself of all the ridiculous options you have, and that might make choosing easier.

Choose choosing! The more deliberately you choose, the more you empower your life.
