Walk Without Pain

The weather is just too beautiful to sit inside because your feet and legs hurt. Many people suffer leg cramps at night, foot pain during the day, and they have tried everything to stop the pain. Orthotics are usually the first thing prescribed, followed by injections, and later surgery. All of these methods are only temporary fixes. What we see as the only options are not what your body needs, or wants. Orthotics will stop the discomfort immediately. At a cost of muscles in the foot atrophying. The injections will also work at first, then your body will require more and more medication. Unfortunately there is a limit on the number of injections you can receive and remain healthy. You will be advised to do surgery. Again, this is temporary as the body will adjust and you may not like it. Learning how to stretch your calves and feet is the only way to stop the pain, once and for all. The stretching you are taught at the gym, in case you are wondering, will not work either. You must stretch all the muscles and never hold it for more than 3 seconds. I will be conducting a class on leg and foot pain this month. The instructions are posted to the right. See you there!

Are suffering with shin splints ?

Many people suffer daily with the pain of shin splints. Shin splints are when you shins ache, especially after running or walking for any period of time. The cause of the pain is coming from the either the way you walk, your shoes, or activity.
People who walk on their toes usually suffer with shin splints. If you are not sure if you do that, then have a friend to watch you walk. In most cases the person that walks on their toes put little to no weight on their heels as they walk. You can examine your shoes and see how your shoes have worn as well.
Some shoes are designed to force you to walk or run on your toes. Since you will be putting all your weight on your toes, expect to have shin discomfort.
Many sports activities require you to push off your toes, which again puts pressure and weight on your shins.
So what are you to do? When you begin to feel your shins ache, sit in a chair with an ottoman or sit on the floor, whichever works for you. Extend you leg out in front of you and massage the outside of your shins from the knee down to your ankle. Start at the shin and massage outward to the outside part of your leg. Then start at your ankle and push up tp your knee to clean out the lactic acid. This many be very painful at first, but if you do this on a regular basis, you can stop the pain of shin splints.

The Muscle Repair Shop News Happy New Year

                               Plantar Fasciitis!
Why is it causing so much trouble?

Many Americans wake up many mornings with the pain of pins and needles in their feet, especially their heels. The pain becomes virtually unbearable if you try to walk on a hard surface with no shoes. Many professional athletes miss many games completely or must play with lifts in their shoes, plus have injections to numb the pain.Last year, Eli Manning suffered most of the season with plantar fasciitis because he was told he could only wait for the pain to stop. Many physicians will tell you if may take up to a year for your Plantar Fasciitis to heal itself and they are correct if you just wait for it to heal itself. The good news is you don't have to wait!
Let's look at what causes Plantar Fasciitis. In the arch of your foot is a muscle named plantar fascia. You have heard of people that walk with a spring in their step. The Plantar Fascia muscle works like a spring so when you step down the muscle can contract and literally spring your foot back up. At your heel the plantar fascia connects to your calf muscles which run up the back of your calves and attach above your knee, which in turn connect to your hamstrings which go to your hip.
If you watch most people walk, especially when they are in a hurry, you will see they lead with their face and not their pelvis. This position puts them in a skiers pose applying the weight of their bodies on their toes.
This increases the strain on the plantar fascia in their foot, which increases strain in your calves, and then into your hamstrings. Once the calves and hamstrings become fatigued, they will not allow the plantar fascia muscle to relax, then the pain starts.
Stretching your calves as demonstrated at www.musclerepairshop.com will stop your Plantar Fasciitis within 5-10 days. That's right! A simple 10 minute Active Isolated Stretching routine would have gotten Eli Manning back in the game in a week or two.

According to a Webmd story, they did a study on the Skechers Shape ups, MBTs, and regular sneakers. WIth all the participants doing the same exercises, WebMd found no differences in the muscle tone of the participants. You are better off to save your money and buy regular sneakers to work out. The work out is the most important part of getting into to shape.

         LOW BACK PAIN IS #1

In America, low back pain is #1 for the reason of doctor appointments. Why are so many people suffering with back pain?
Low muscle tone due to inactivity, obesity, stress, and bad diet.
Many people believe that where the pain is, the problem is as well. But that is usually not the case. Most times the muscles of the hips and thighs can contribute to a large degree. If you stand a lot, the muscles on the front of your thighs will stiffen and create back pain. If you sit a lot, the muscles in the back of your thighs can create back pain. If you bend over many times a day, especially when picking up things, this can cause back pain by tightening your hips. Stress will cause you to hold your muscles very tight which wil lead to back pain. And of course, being overweight puts stress on your back muscles trying to hold you up straight as it fights against the weight of your stomach. As you can see, the cause of the pain can be in your thighs, lifestyle, or your weight, yet the effect shows up in your back.

How do you stop this pain?

Stretching your thighs, the quads and hamstrings is a good place to start. Reducing your weight, changing your lifestyle to a less stressful environment, and stretching your muscles. Now you can strength train your legs and hips once you have stretched out your muscles. These are really more effective ways to stop low back pain with less damage to your body.
Next time you have a back pain, don't just run to the doctor for medicine, go to our videos at www.musclerepairshop.com, and fix it yourself. Enjoy your life, pain free!

 The Muscle Repair Shop News

Why are My Joints Wearing Out so Fast?

According to
the Food and Drug Administration,
since the year 2000, the number of joint replacement surgeries performed each year has been on the rise. In 2001,
165,000 hip joints and 326,000 knees were replaced in the United
States alone.
Renaissance
Orthopedics reports:
Between the years 1971-1975, 51% of cases of osteoarthritis were treated with knee replacements.2
·
Between the years
2000-2003, 92% of cases of osteoarthritis were treated with total knee
replacements.2
·
By the year 2030, it
is estimated that the number of knee replacements will increase from 450,400 to
3.48 million.2
·
Also by the year 2030,
it is estimated that the number of hip replacements will increase from 208,600 to 572,100.2
I remember
as a young man in North Carolina, I can't remember anyone with a joint
replacement back in the 60's. The FDA says that today modern medicine has
allowed joint replacements to be easier and more available. Which sounds good,
but are we having more replacements because it is easier or because our bodies
are in worse shape than our parents and grandparents. I believe the latter.
In my practice I see people of all ages, from
20-95 years of age, and their joints are freezing up due to inactivity, poor
diet, and being overweight. Let's look at the importance of each.
Inactivity
is a major cause of joints going bad. You would think by being inactive, your
joints would last longer, however the opposite is true. Moving your joints
through their full range of motion actually causes your body to inject synovial
fluid into the joint. This synovial fluid works like oil, or WD40, on your
joints. The lubrication will help keep arthritis away and keep your joint
gliding along. Active Isolated Stretching elongates the muscles around your
joints keeping the proper spacing in each of your joints to protect the
cartilage, which is there to cushion the joint. By exercising at least 30
minutes a day and stretching every other day you can help your joints to last a
lot longer than what we see in the statistics above.
Poor diet
contributes to joint replacement by not providing the body the proper nutrients
to repair and heal muscle tissue when you are active. When you exercise your
body with strength training, walking, biking, stretching, or virtually any
activity, you are creating slight muscle tears. The muscle tissues heal
themselves faster with better nutrition. Many people are taking all these
recovery powders, pills, and drinks, when all they need is a proper diet of
fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruits. Eating lots of red meat actually
creates more harm for the body than many think. Drinking plenty of water each
day goes a long way in keeping your body hydrated. Add a lemon slice and now
you are also balancing your ph level. It must be a fresh lemon and not a bottle
of lemon juice. It is not the same.
Keeping your body weight under control is the
final step to good joint health. Picture this, you have a small pickup truck
and you decide to carry all the dirt that is in the back of a huge dump truck
at one time. What do you think will happen to your little truck once you unload
the dirt in the dump truck onto your truck? The axles will probably break!
Well, that is what is happening to your body when you are overweight. Your body
is designed to carry only so much weight for your height. So if you are 6'4"
tall. You can carry more weight than if you 5'4" tall. Being overweight is not
genetic either. You are not overweight because of the size of your bones
either. Most people really do not have a clear concept of eating properly. I
didn't say eating perfectly! By keeping your weight at a healthy level, it will
take the pressure off your joints, you will have increased energy to exercise
every day, and your body will be able to heal itself after every activity.
Start today and get moving. Learn more about
healthy eating, not dieting. Getting your body the energy it needs to get
moving. Then get moving and I don't care if you have to start walking around
your house first, just move! Let's reduce that weight so I can be with you
longer in this lifetime. Remember- EAT TO LIVE- DON'T LIVE TO EAT!

Being in control of your bodily functions?
I am not talking about the typical bodily functions. I am speaking of bodily functions lik walking, running, biking, and just working around the yard. Most people in America have lost control, even young people. When you lose control of your functions, you rely on pain killers, muscle relaxers, braces, and even surgeries. The most damaging way of dealing with this is denial by saying things like, my age is why I hurt. Nothing could further from the truth.
Your aches and pains come from an accumulation of activities you have done in your life. If you still think it is from your age, look around and see how many people your age has exactly the same pains. For example, your right hip hurts. If age has anything to do with it, then every human that is your age will have the same hip pain you have. SO what do you do?
Start improving your strength, flexibility, get monthly massages, and eat healthier foods. We are so caught in following organizations who are money driven to supply us with unbiased information. Remember they are there for a profit. It doesn't make them a bad company, but understand they are profit driven. So take back control, spend some time and learn what your body truly needs. If everyone would do this, we could greatly reduce healthcare in our country quickly.

Do you Have Blackberry Syndrome?

Today more and more people are text messaging and working on their computers more than ever. While these products make life easier, it can also create amazing pain in your forearms. It can even keep you awake at night. Some people will try bands on their forearms and even injections. So what is happening?
The muscles in your forearm control your fingers and allow your hands to move in all the directions they do. As you use your fingers, these muscles get tired and can spasm especially close to your elbows as this is where they attach. This is usually where the pain begins. The way to combat this and stop it is to start with massaging your forearms by beginning at your wrist and pushing up to your elbow. Make several passes until the pain subsides.
Next make a light fist and use your other hand to push down, bending at your wrist. Hold for 2 seconds and repeat 10 times.
Now hold your arm out straight with your palm face up. Use your other hand and bend your hand toward the floor. Hold 2 seconds and repeat 10 times. This should stop the pain.
This also works well with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Chronic Low Back Pain Panel
i was recently invited to sit on a panel for The Senior Friendship Center discussing Chronic Low Back Pain. I was joined by 2 Neurologists and 2 Accupuncture Physicians. We looked at the causes and effects of low back pain on the patient, the treatment protocols rendered by physicians, and how it should be treated.
I believe we all were in agreement that the causes of low back pain is due more to lifestyle and diet than anything else. Keeping your weight at a healthy level, exercising consistently, and eating a proper diet will go a long way to having a healthy back.
Many times doctors never physically examine the patient's back, they just send the patient out for a test, which can come back with an incorrect diagnosis. We agredd that back surgery should be the last option for any one suffering from low back pain. Many times once a patient has surgery they need return for 2 or more surgeries, never really getting rid of the pain.
Be careful in choosing a treatment for back pain. Very few times is the problem from the vertebrae. The pain is usually created by the nerves and the muscles, with the muscles usually at the start of the pain. Trying treatments like deep tissue massage, Active Isolated Stretching, Trigger Point injections, Accupuncture, and Hypnosis are very good at relieving the pain. Once th epain stops then follow the treatment with proper back strengthening to keep the pain away.
Believe it or not, I have actually seen bulging discs go back in place with Active Isolated Stretching and some Chiropractic care. So don't be too quick to go under the knife. Many times that decision leaves with a lifetime of pain.

  Alternative vs Main Stream Medicine

There has been a lot of discussion lately about which is better. Some people refuse to try natural supplements, while others refuse to try pharmaceutical medicines. So who is right? Well they both are. We need the natural supplements to give our bodies the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and prevent disease like heart disease and cancer. However we need main stream medicines to help us once we get major diseases. We have been living in a reactive healthcare system and it is costing us immensely. We need to stop tying up our doctors and scientists time with the common cold and take care of it ourselves with natural remedies. This would cut our healthcare costs in half and allow our doctors to do amazing things to help the really sick. Think about it, then try it. I hope you do.

Will Your Insurance Pay for Massage Therapy?

Some insurance companies will actually pay for massage therapy. You will have to check your policy. If they will pay then let me know and we can bill your insurance company. In the past insurance companies would not pay me, but would pay a doctor who employed a massage therapist. Under the new Obama Healthcare Plan, they are supposed to pay directly to any licensed healthcare practitioner. I am willing to try and see if they will pay as I have been told.

  Shoes That Kill Feet

Each day I see many people suffering from various problems like leg cramps, pain in their heels, knee pain, and even back pain. The main culprit for many is the shoes they choose to wear. Many people here like to wear flip flops or clogs all the time. If you wear them once in a while you would be okay, but many wear them all the time. When wearing shoes without a back strap you must scrunch your toes to keep the shoes on your feet. This causes a tightness in your arch and up your calves. Second, many people will slide their feet and not take a full stride. This shortens the hamstrings and quads in the front of your thighs. The combination of the these things will lead to plantar fasciitis, fallen arches, and low back pain. If you want to wear open shoes, I would suggest sandals with a heel strap. Your body posture starts in your feet, so be kind to your feet.

 Low Back Pain is #1

Low back pain is the #1 reason Americans go to doctors. It seems everywhere I go I run into people suffering with low back pain of some sort. What is even scarier is the treatments of low back pain. I hear stories of epidural shots, cortizone shots, hanging upside down, braces, and of course surgery. Don't get me wrong, these treatments can be helpful in special cases. However, 90% of low back pain is usually caused from the lack of movement or strength in your low back. Tight hip muscles are the main culprit of low back pain. Typical healthcare practitioners will look at the location of the pain and usually miss the source of the pain. Your hips can tighten by sitting too much, lifting heavy objects, or over exercising. One of the best ways to rid yourself of tight hips is to lie on your stomach and have someone pres their elbow into your hips. They will have to move their elbow and press. Your job is to breathe and focus on releasing the muscle that is tight. So the next time your back hurts try and let me know if it worked. Good Luck!
