Chronic Low Back Pain Panel
i was recently invited to sit on a panel for The Senior Friendship Center discussing Chronic Low Back Pain. I was joined by 2 Neurologists and 2 Accupuncture Physicians. We looked at the causes and effects of low back pain on the patient, the treatment protocols rendered by physicians, and how it should be treated.
I believe we all were in agreement that the causes of low back pain is due more to lifestyle and diet than anything else. Keeping your weight at a healthy level, exercising consistently, and eating a proper diet will go a long way to having a healthy back.
Many times doctors never physically examine the patient's back, they just send the patient out for a test, which can come back with an incorrect diagnosis. We agredd that back surgery should be the last option for any one suffering from low back pain. Many times once a patient has surgery they need return for 2 or more surgeries, never really getting rid of the pain.
Be careful in choosing a treatment for back pain. Very few times is the problem from the vertebrae. The pain is usually created by the nerves and the muscles, with the muscles usually at the start of the pain. Trying treatments like deep tissue massage, Active Isolated Stretching, Trigger Point injections, Accupuncture, and Hypnosis are very good at relieving the pain. Once th epain stops then follow the treatment with proper back strengthening to keep the pain away.
Believe it or not, I have actually seen bulging discs go back in place with Active Isolated Stretching and some Chiropractic care. So don't be too quick to go under the knife. Many times that decision leaves with a lifetime of pain. |
