Breast Feeding - Dr Klemm

01/03/2010

As a Chiropractor with an interest in children, and as a father, breastfeeding has been an interesting and rewarding experience.  But it was quite an education!

I was surprised to find out how much of breastfeeding is a learned experience for both mother and baby.

Without help and good advice at the beginning I doubt we would have persisted through the initial difficulties.

I have since joined the Australian
Breastfeeding Association and obtained information for the use of our patients and friends.

If you have any questions, please ask for an information pack which includes the contact details for the Australia Breastfeeding Association counsellors.

Low Back Pain - Dr Commerford

01/03/2010

Lower Back Pain (LBP) is very common!  Many people, of all ages, will experience LBP at some stage in their lives.  Some people will have more trouble than others.  Low back problems cause not only pain, but can also effect how well you move, what you can do, how you feel, how you sleep, even how easily you can put your socks on.

Sometimes LBP is caused by your job.  If you have a manual job (eg if you're a farmer, a tradie, a nurse or a mum of young kids!) you need to learn how to lift and move properly.  We will chat about this in our next newsletter.  If you sit alot (ie you work in an office, are a truckie or a student), you need to sit properly!  This sounds simple, but I will give you some easy tips shortly to improve the way you sit.

Sometimes LBP will happen because you've hurt yourself.

Sometimes LBP will seem to happen for no reason at all!

How Can You Get Help?

Spinal manipulation has been shown to be very helpful in helping LBP, and no one is more qualified in this area than your Chiropractor!

Chiropractors are trained not only to help fix your LBP, but also know when something more serious is wrong.  We have many different techniques to adjust your spine.  So even if you have wear and tear, are pregnant, or have osteoporosis for example, we can tailor a treatment to suit your body and spine, and help with your LBP.

So, if you're experiencing Low Back Pain, book yourself an appointment for a consultation.

Now, for some sitting tips!

*  Sit with your bottom in the back of your chair
*  If you have a lumbar support, use it!  If you don't, roll up a towel.  Pop the rolled up towel in the small of your back.  It should feel comfortable, but feel like it supports your lower back.  You might need to play with the size of the towel.
*  Your knees should be bent to about 90degrees, and so should your ankles.
*  You should not be twisted while you sit.

Runner's Knee (ITB Friction Syndrome or ITBFS) - Dr Lehmann

01/03/2010

What Is Runner's Knee?

ITBFS stands for Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome.  It happens when the ITB repetitively rubs against the outside of the knee (lateral femoral condyle).
ITBFS causes include tight muscles in your buttock (gluteus muscles), tight hip abductors (including your TFL), weakness in the muscles at the front of your leg (in your quadriceps) as well as your bike seat height and position to name a few.

What Does It Feel Like?

People with ITBFS will have pain on the outside of their knee, that progressively gets worse over a few days to a few weeks.

Often, but not always, the pain is related to running and is worse when running downhill.  Bike riding may also cause ITBFS (The ITB is irritated most when the knee bends through 30-40 degrees of flexion).

How can ITBFS be helped?

Treatment of this condition involves:

*  soft tissue techniques
*  taping
*  stretching
*  strengthening exercises

Some techniques include:

*  Active Release Technique (which lengthens a tight muscle or ligament)
* Graston Technique (which gets rid of scar tissue by using steel instruments)
*  Kinesiotape (which is a flexible tape used to gain strength, decrease tension and release fascia to name a few applications)  You might have seen this during the recent Australian Open as different coloured tape on many of the athletes shoulders.

Stretches To Help Fix ITBFS

*  Stand.  Cross the sore leg behind the good leg.  Lean towards the good side.  This can be done with your hands over your head or hanging down by your side.

*  Lay on your good side and pull the foot of the sore side towards your buttock (similar to a quad stretch).  Then put the foot on your good side on the sore leg and put downward pressure on for 30 seconds.

*  S
it on the floor.  Stretch the good leg in front of you.  Then bend your sore leg and place this foot across the other leg as close to your buttock as possible.  Then pull the knee into the chest as much as possible.

Why Is Water So Important - Rachel Eisen - Massage Therapist

01/03/2010

Our bodies are made up of 70-80% water!  Our brain is closer to 85% water, and our muscles are about 75% water.

We need adequate water to wash away toxins, keep us lubricated, cushion our joints, carry oxygen and nutrients into all our cells, and help regulate our body temperature.

Some of the signs you may be dehydrated are:

*  Fatigue

*  A dry tongue
*  Dry skin
*  Poor skin elasticity
*  Constipation
*  Headache
*  Muscle spasms
*  Being thirsty!

Caffeine is a strong diuretic, which means drinks like coke and coffee will dehydrate us further.

So, simply increase your water intake and your body may well work a whole lot better!
