"As someone who has suffered with chronic pain, fatigue, and insomnia for several years, the immediate change that I noticed was my increased energy and I lost weight very quickly. Within the first week I had less pain and was able to sleep through the night without waking -- this was the first time in months. I would recommend working with Deirdre to anyone suffering from chronic pain, an auto-immune disease, or anybody that has poor nutrition and is looking for a healthy start." -- Jenna Wakefield

A Note From Deirdre

Hi ,

One of the questions I am often asked is, "what is the most important thing I can change about my diet that will improve my health while I'm at work?"  And whatever job you do, my answer is basically the same when it comes to how you set yourself up to commence your work day:  "Eat a healthy breakfast and include some quality protein"!

If you are not hungry when you wake up or simply cannot make the time, consider setting up some breakfast food at work.  Most offices will have a staff / tea room with at least a fridge where you can fix yourself some easy meals.  Consider boiling some eggs the night before and toss them into a container to take with you.  Eggs are nutrient dense and energy dense with lots of vitamins, proteins, and healthy fats.

Consider packing a bag with several pieces of fruit, which are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, include some nuts, such as almonds or walnuts, which also contain important vitamins, minerals, and fiber; toss in some canned salmon or tune, which is usually wild caught and not farm-raised, and you're good to go.

Be sure to have plenty of clean water on hand as its easy to become dehydrated when working in air-conditioning or centrally heated offices.  Depleted fluid levels lead to fatigue so keep some on your desk and remember to take regular sips throughout the day.

Remember to go easy on the caffeine so you don't dehydrate yourself since coffee is a diuretic and  drinking too much easily stresses your adrenal glands.  Bring enough food to last you the entire day to keep your blood sugar levels up and your brain well nourished.  For lunch, consider something quick and easy such as some kind of sandwich which you can make yourself using gluten free wraps or tortillas.  You'll find some more delicious recipes and ideas below.

Remember to keep your body moving and do regular neck and shoulder stretches.  Get up from your desk at frequent intervals and be sure to get out into the sunshine and fresh air during your lunch and take in your supply of vitamin D.

If you would like to learn more about toxic toiletries, chemical overload and the symptoms they create, plus how to eliminate toxins and improve your energy, please join me in a free 1 hour teleseminar on September 23rd, where I'll provide you with all the necessary tools and resources to help you make better choices.  You can register for that below.

September 23rd - FREE live Tele- / Web -seminar -- How Toxic Toiletries & Chemical Overload Can Lead to Fibromyalgia Symptoms.  Learn about: Hazardous chemicals in cosmetics, skin care products, and many every day products that may contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms and what you can do to protect yourself from this chemical invasion!  -- 7 PM (Eastern) / 4 PM (Pacific)

Are you suffering with symptoms of chronic toxicity that may be contributing to your fibromyalgia symptoms but don't realize that you're toxic?

Many products (shampoos, deodorants, lotions, makeup, even baby shampoos), contain carcinogens, hormone disrupting chemicals, chemicals that have never been tested for health effects, and we are putting these chemicals on our bodies, in our hair, on our babies, day after day, and the toxic exposures are adding up.  What is this doing to us?

Join me in this FREE 1 hour tele-seminar and I'll explain some of the health consequences plus provide you with all of the necessary tools and resources to help you make better choices-- for yourself, your children, and the planet -- and help you to reduce some of those fibromyalgia symptoms!

The event will be recorded so don't worry if you can't make it. Click here to pre-register and receive the call-in details with a link to the recording and the replay afterwards.

Eating Well At Work

Are you one of the 7 out of 10 people in America who eat at their desks? We are! Not always, but sometimes desking and dining just can't be avoided. So when deadlines conflict with a nice lunch out, let's do the best we can to make desk dining as healthy and delicious as possible! There are two key things to keep your health in mind when you desk and dine.

How We Eat

Surprisingly, how we eat is actually more important than what we eat. When we are stressed, annoyed, angry or frustrated, your fight-or-flight response takes over and your sympathetic nervous system shuts down digestion. Have you ever had a meal sit like a brick in your stomach? That's pretty much what happens, because you're literally not able to digest unless your parasympathetic nervous system is activated. In other words, you have to relax. Easier said than done at work, right? Not entirely. All you need to do is take a minute or two before you eat and take five deep breaths. Deep, like into your belly. The body will have no choice but to switch off the stress system, and switch on the relaxation system. Voila!

Food Focus:
Sprouted Grains

So what's the deal with sprouted grains? Why are they better for us than flour products? The main benefit of sprouting any food is twofold: first, it releases vital nutrients and second, it makes those nutrients easier for the body to assimilate. You can sprout at home on your own, as shown here,  but if you don't have time you can now purchase sprouted foods. Let's look at an example of a sprouted food at your local health food store.

You may have heard of Ezekial, breads and wraps, usually found in your health food store's refrigerated or freezer section. To unlock the dormant grain energy and maximize nutritional value, Ezekial adds water to organic grains, which releases beneficial enzymes that sprout the grains. The resulting sprouted grain is richer in protein and vitamins than a regular bread made from dry, ground flour. You'll notice that if you keep Ezekial breads and wraps out on your counter, they'll spoil after only a few days. That's a good thing! That means that they have life energy in them, which boosts your own energy when you eat them. See our Recipe section below for suggestions on how to use sprouted wraps.

Recipe:
Build-A-Better-Sandwich

You can store Ezekial breads and wraps in the refrigerator or the freezer - they'll last longest in the freezer. If you store them there, just pull out what you're going to use a couple minutes before you make your sandwich. They defrost super quickly. Wraps are perfect for healthy desking and dining!

Ingredients:

   Wraps:

  • Ezekial sprouted corn tortilla (gluten-free)
  • Ezekial sprouted whole grain wraps

   Possible Fillings:

  • Avocado slices, pinto beans, organic cheddar cheese*, salsa
  • Free-range, hormone-free turkey, avocado, sprouts, shredded zucchini dijon mustard
  • Tempeh, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, Annie's Goddess Dressing
  • Hummus, tabbouleh, sprouts and cucumbers
  • Baked tofu, sautéed spinach and pumpkin seeds

Directions:

1.    Put fillings in wrap and fold.

2.    Wrap in paper towel or parchment to reduce spillage.

3.    Bring to work and refrigerate.

4.    Enjoy!

Note:

*Omit cheese or substitute rice, soy or almond cheese

 Wellness Quick Tip

If you knew there was a vitamin that can instantly rejuvenate, refresh and reinvigorate, would you take it? Well, that vitamin exists! It's called Vitamin FA, for "Fresh Air". Sitting in a closed office all day is hard on your body, as it requires liberal doses of Vitamin FA. The next time you want to head to Starbucks to stave off your afternoon energy dip, take a brisk 10 minute walk outside instead. It's guaranteed to lift your mood and your energy!
