Nurse Entrepreneurs - Get the order of your credentials right
Do you sometimes wonder in what order you should list your credentials after your name? I was actually surprised to learn that there was a convention for listing them.
I recently read a blog post written by Rachael Arruda, RN, LNCC. She explained the order for displaying nurse credentials as recommended by the ANA. The order of credentials for professional nurses is as follows:
Education - the highest level of education you have achieved is listed first
Licensure - any state mandated licensure such as RN or LPN
State designations - any recognized designation that allows a nurse to practice at a higher level such as NP (Nurse Practitioner) or CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist)
National Nursing certifications - any national certifications you have earned through a nationally accredited certified accrediting body
Awards and honors - any significant awards or honors recognizing achievements in nursing such as FAAN (Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing)
Other certifications or recognitions - any other certifications or recognitions you have earned including non-nursing certifications that demonstrate additional skills such as EMT (Emergency Medical Technicians)
The listing of credentials when identifying yourself as a nurse follows a standardized order. Follow this order correctly whenever you display your credentials whether it is on a business card, email, letter, or some other type of material.
If you have multiple certifications you can list them in whatever order you choose. However, list them in the appropriate order depending on if they are nursing certifications or other certifications. If you have more than one in either of these categories you might consider listing them in the order in which you obtained them with the most recent certification being listed first.

Someone Already Has A Newsletter For My Target Market
Last week I wrote a tip about why you need to be writing and sending out a newsletter. I could hear the comments before it was even posted. "But one of my competitors is already writing a newsletter for my target market!" That may be the case. However, you should still be doing your own newsletter.
Watch where your competition is hanging out and what they are doing. You can track where your competition hangs out on line by using Google Alerts. Monitor what they are doing and mimic it if it looks as though it is being effective.
Don't forget that you are unique. No one else is exactly like you with your same background, skills, and experiences. Therefore you will present differently and will likely resonate with different individuals. Healthy competition can also nudge us to grow more quickly and put out a better product.
People who know me will be aware that I believe in the concept of abundance. Some people seem to focus on scarcity while I chose to believe in abundance and the idea that there is plenty to go around. I recently posted on my blog (http://blog.nurse-entrepreneur-network.com/) about the "7 Nurse Entrepreneurs to Follow". I believe that by supporting each other we all gain.
Don't let fears or excuses stand in your way of success. Get started on your newsletter now.

That's it for this week! Spread the word by forwarding these tips to your friends and to other nursepreneurs. They'll be glad you did!

5 Reasons Why Every Nurse Entrepreneur Should Have A Newsletter
In addition to the other ways you connect with your target audience (such as through Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter) it is important to have a newsletter. Your reasons for having a newsletter will likely include all or most of the following:

Build a relationship with your target market - When you send out a newsletter you as staying in touch with your subscribers. This helps them to feel closer to you and to build the "know, like, and trust" factor that is important in any sales relationship.
Stay in front of your target market - When your target market is ready to buy they will more likely think of you if they have been receiving regular newsletter from you. Your company and you will come to mind.
Establish yourself as an authority - By providing interesting content, tips, and unique value your target market begins to see you as someone who is a market leader. Your target market wants to buy from someone who sets themselves apart as being an expert and someone who thoroughly understands the issues of your target market.
Do it for less - Having a newsletter is the most cost effective way to communicate with your target market. "Permission email campaigns are ten times more effective than direct mail campaigns." (source: IMT Strategies) In addition, your target market may share your newsletter with their friends and business partners thus doing your marketing for you.
Keep them up to date - With a newsletter you can easily share recent news, milestones, and upcoming events. Your target market can easily follow what you are doing and where you are going.
The money is in the list! I am sure you have heard this all over the internet. Having and growing an email list and sending out your newsletter is the most cost effective way to increase the number of customers buying from you.

Nurse Entrepreneur Start Up Rules

There are a few basic rules that you must follow if you are to have a successful nurse entrepreneur business. Here are three of the most critical.

Have a clear business model - you cannot start a successful nurse entrepreneur company unless you know exactly how you will make money. I have encountered a number of nurses who have started blogging, offering education, or sharing their information on a resource site without a plan for how they will monetize their business. This is not a good idea. Know from the beginning how you will make money in your nurse entrepreneur business.

Be resourceful - explore ways to start your nurse entrepreneur business as cost effectively as possible. Start with a home office. Get everything done as cost effectively as you can. You can burn through resources quickly while you are waiting for your company to begin to make money. Make your startup capital last as long as possible.

Know where you will find your target market and what problem you solve for your target market - You need to be able to find your target market in groups. This is far more cost effective than finding them one at a time. Once you have found them you need to have a solution to their problem that is so unique and exceptional that it is obvious there is no other reasonable solution to their problem.
If you follow these three rules you will be well on your way to having a successful nurse entrepreneur business!

That's it for this week! Spread the word by forwarding these tips to your friends and to other nursepreneurs. They'll be glad you did!

Leads Are Crucial for Your Business!
Without leads you will not have a business. You need to work on generating leads as soon as you begin your business. Developing incentives for getting and keeping prospects on your list will also be extremely important.
You need to start early with your lead generation tactics. There are very few businesses that have a short sales process for generating interest in your product or service which over time leads to a sale.
Give your target audience an incentive to be on your list. This might be a free white paper, a complimentary checklist of value to them, or some other inexpensive incentive that is related to your business that will have enough value that they will want to join your lists.

You may also want to give them a reason to stay on your list. Do you have other incentives that you can periodically distribute that will make them want to stay on your list and even encourage their friends to be on your list?
Lead generation is a process that can be online or offline. Some online ideas are joining newsgroups and mail lists where your target market hangs out. You can also submit articles you write to article directories. Offline you can offer short presentations and attend networking events.
Lead generation is not as complicated as some would have you believe. However, you need to have a plan and start early.
If you need more ideas on lead generation join the Nurse Entrepreneur Network for a wide variety of ideas!

That's it for this week! Spread the word by forwarding these tips to your friends and to other nursepreneurs. They'll be glad you did!

Don't Put This Off Until Next Week! Do This Now!
What is the one thing you must do this week to help to insure the success of your nurse entrepreneur business? Write out your New Year's resolutions for your business!
Why is it so important to do it now? It has been proven time and time again that ...

If you haven't created your list of New Year's resolutions before or during the first weekend in January, you likely won't do it at all.

Get them down in writing. Numerous university studies have shown that resolutions (like goals) are far more likely to be accomplished if they are in writing.

They must be specific. Wanting to make more money is not specific enough. Try something like:

I will increase my revenue by 10%.
I will increase my profit by 10%.
I will read about sales and marketing for 30 minutes each day.
I will learn one new thing every day. (This is one of my favorites.)
That's it for this week! Spread the word by forwarding these tips to your friends and to other nursepreneurs. They'll be glad you did!

Last Minute Tax Deductions For Nurse Entrepreneurs
If you live in the United States you only have a few days left to consider a few last minute tax deductions for your nurse entrepreneur business. Don't forget to review these while you still have time to take action!
If you have extra cash you can likely reduce your tax payment by doing one of more of the following:
Buy needed equipment before the end of the year - if you have the money in the bank to be able to purchase equipment outright and not buy it with a credit card it can potentially reduce your taxes in the year you make the purchase.
Pay outstanding bills - if you anticipate that you need the tax deduction more in the current year than you will need it in the coming year you can pay a few invoices before they are actually due. If you pay them this year they may help to reduce your taxes this year.
Buy supplies for the coming year and pay for them in cash - just like the above you can buy needed supplies and pay for them in cash this year.
Caution: The above suggestions only apply to those who use a calendar year as their fiscal year. You need to pay for the above items in cash and be careful not to use a credit card. If you use a credit card you cannot take the deduction until you make the payment on the credit card which very likely won't fall within the current calendar year. Check with your accountant to be certain that the above suggestions apply in your situation (state, business structure, fiscal year...)
Managing your financial resources well can have a significant impact on the success of your nurse entrepreneur business.

Does Social Media Work For Nurse Entrepreneurs?
Some people will say that social media does not work for small businesses including nurse entrepreneur businesses. These people are not seeing things quite right. Social media can work for small business such as nurse entrepreneurs but there must be a plan.
A business without a plan is destined to fail. Engaging in social media without a plan is also destined to fail. You must have a well thought out, disciplined approach to your social media involvement. In thinking about your social media campaign think about your goals, strategies, and tactics.
By being involved in social media you can build a community, improve branding, or increase sales. However, you need to know which of these is your primary goal. Once you know your goal then you can design your strategies and tactics. No matter which goal you select you need to be consistent. You can not jump in and out of social media and expect your community to follow you. You must actively participate and engage your audience to build a loyal following.
Building an online presence involves showing up time and time again. It also involves sharing valuable information with your community. A random stream of consciousness with no particular purpose will only serve to confuse your community. Know your goal, what is important to reach your goal, and what you need to post related to your goal.
If you are not already active in social media sites begin now to plan your goal, strategies, and tactics. Consistently participate and you will begin to see that it pays off.

That's it for this week! Spread the word by forwarding these tips to your friends and to other nursepreneurs. They'll be glad you did!
