This week's tip:
'Does 'Networking' really work?
Does Networking really work? Well, it depends. There are a number
of variables to consider. Here are couple of the variables.
1. Is it a general networking group or is it where your target
market gathers?
In my opinion the best use of networking groups is to be able to
connect with the decision makers in your target market. You can
connect with them directly or through a contact you make at a
networking group who is willing to introduce you to the decision
maker.
Where do you think you are most likely to find these types of
contacts? In a general network or in a network where your target
market gathers?
I recently spoke with a nurse entrepreneur about the effectiveness
of networking groups. Her target market is nurse executives. We
agreed that she could better spend her time by joining and
participating in a nurse executive association rather than a
chamber of commerce or woman networking group.
You only have so much time for marketing so use your time wisely.
2. Do you follow up after a networking event or just wait for
things to happen?
Taking the time to do the follow up after a networking event is
critical. Be careful not to attend too many networking events so
you will have time to do the follow up. If you don't do the
necessary follow up the event has little or no value for your
business.
Before you even attend the event block out time on your schedule
for the follow up activity to make sure that you have the time to
follow up and to ensure that you get the full value from the time
you invest in the networking event.
