Scripture for the Day  (August 3, 2017)

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Timothy 3:16)
Is the Old Testament is Dead?

One of the biggest lies perpetrated on the modern church by Satan is that the Old Testament is dead and that we are only to live by the New Testament. We have entire denominations that base some of their doctrinal beliefs on this very fact which holds them back from the blessings of God.

For example, some churches don’t allow musical instruments in their worship services because they don’t see them in the New Testament, even though the Book of Psalms defines their use in detail.

Another example is how churches apply Old Testament teachings. I recently visited a very large Sunday school class in a very well-known evangelical church in our area. The teacher was a former theological seminary professor and was teaching on the difference between the Calvinist and Armenian beliefs. The teacher was asked what the Calvinists thought about the scripture in Deuteronomy 30:19 that says, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.

The teacher responded with the statement that this scripture was in the Old Testament and applied to the Jewish people only and was not relevant to Christians today. Unbelievable!!!!

When I heard that teacher’s response, my heart literally hurt. All those people in that class were sitting there like little hungry birds and just gobbled it right down like it was true. That is how cunning the enemy is.

Did you know that the same Holy Spirit that inspired men to write the New Testament inspired men to write the Old Testament? Did you know that scriptures from the Old Testament are quoted in the New Testament a minimum of 265 times with the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Psalms being quoted over 100 times? That doesn’t sound to me like the Old Testament was dead to Jesus and His disciples!!!

Take note that our image for today is a scripture from Deuteronomy 8:3. Sound familiar? It should, because Jesus quoted it in Matthew 4:4 when tempted by Satan.

Now, just think about this. I know of talented musicians that go to some of the churches that ban musical instruments. These people play in local nightclubs but they are not allowed to use their talents in the church. Just maybe, if they were allowed to use their gift from God in the church, they would not have to play in a nightclub. Religion stinks!!!

I want to encourage you to read the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Psalms. Isaiah was one of the greatest prophets of all time. He had specific prophecies about Jesus 760 years before Jesus was even born. What Isaiah saw in the Spirit could help you see some things that have been kept secret until this point in your life.

The Book of Psalms is also similarly insightful. David was a true worshipper and a man after God’s own heart. He was not perfect, but neither are we. The battles that he fought are some of the same battles we face today.

The Old Testament is not dead! It is alive and relevant for today!!!!!
