In our scripture for today Jesus is speaking to believers when he says, "He who believes in me will do the works that I do and greater works will he do". Believers are the people who believe in Jesus. They are regular people like you and me who have confessed
that Jesus is Lord. We are the ones that can do the works of Jesus and greater works! The big question is, do you believe that???
Let's look at some more scripture that will help you see how these works and greater works are possible:
In John 14:16-17 Jesus says, "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." And in John 16:7 Jesus says, “Nevertheless I tell you
the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you”.
Jesus was leaving and it was going to be to our advantage because he was going to send the Holy Spirit who could live in each and every believer. Jesus could only be in one place at a time but the Holy Spirit could be everywhere.
That makes way for the greater works.
Also in Matthew 16:19 Jesus said, “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Jesus gave us His name and the authority to use His name so we could do the works He did and greater works. And lastly we can do even greater works than He did because of prayer. He tells us in verses 13 and 14: “Whatsoever YE SHALL ASK in my name, that will I do. . . . If YE SHALL ASK any thing in my name, I will do it.”
We will accomplish the greater works in concert with the power of prayer! Prayer is putting God to work in the Earth and nothing is impossible to God. (Luke 1:37)
Jesus expects greater works out of His
believers. Do you expect them out of yourself?
