Be still and know that I am God: (Psalm 46:10)

 Be Still and Listen

We live in a high speed, fast pace, busy, and noisy world. The televisions, computers, smartphones and internet are running all the time. The only time most of us get still is when we go to sleep at night. Do you ever take the time to turn off all that noise and just listen to God?

On May 12 our television cable went out to our home. Our provider, who I will not mention for fear of a return to cursing, informed us they could not look at the problem until May 27. So, we have been without our televisions since May 12. What a curse, and yet, what a blessing!!!

I really was not aware how much I was missing by having all that noise drowning out the voice of the Lord. I now wake up in the morning hearing God and go to bed hearing God rather than the "bad news" channels.

There are three separate Hebrew words in the Old Testament that are translated "still". The word used in our scripture for the day is "raphah" which means to cease or be idle. The word used in Psalm 8:2 is "shabath" where it talks about stilling the enemy. That word means to cease, interrupt or to get rid of. The word used in Psalm 139:18 is "owd" when talking about God always being present. That word means to continue.

Do you see the picture that the Word of God is painting here? If we will just be still before Him, and spend some quiet time with Him, we will know that He is God, we will know that He is with us always, and we will know that He will still the enemy.

I remember reading an article once about Mother Teresa being asked what she said when she prayed to God. Her answer was, "I listen".

Be still!! Listen!! God wants to talk to you!! (I just hope God doesn't have to zap your television cable to get you still.)

How precious are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
(Psalm 139:17-18)

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. (Psalm 8:2)

but they that wait upon (on, for) the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)
