While social media will obviously serve a purpose, a large proportion of people are still using Google and other search engines to find products and services.

How are you doing? Can you be found when people search for your products and services (NOT just your name!) online? Or are your potential clients finding your competitors?

If you think you've done all you can on your website, , here are a few more ways you can enhance your SEO, followed by a couple of blog posts you might want to read, and of course the by now obligatory offer :)

3 Ways to Help your SEO

1) Get a Google Plus account. Like it or not, Google is giving preference to sites that have been 'plus oned' in Google+ and the more you take part, the more you can promote your sites and content. Share your site with your G+ contacts and encourage them to 'plus 1' you too.

2) Blog. I know, I know, you're sick of hearing me saying it, but a regularly updated blog gives Google more content and makes your website seem more dynamic - both great for enhancing your SEO.

3) Guest blog or write articles. Incoming links do still count for something, and rather than buying a load of dodgy links and risking getting penalised, guest blogging on popular blogs or submitting articles to popular article sites will help you to get well thought of dofollow links that matter.

There are just 3 ways you can help your SEO with very little effort - have a think about it over the weekend and get started next week!

Of course, none of that is going to help much if you haven't got your on page / site SEO sorted, so do have a look at our Super Silly Spring SEO Offer to get you on track there.

SEO Blog Posts You Should Read

They Know Your Name So What?
It's easy to become complacent when your analytics tell you that you're getting lots of hits from Google and other search engines - but look at those stats a little more. If the only thing you're being found for is your company name, you're missing out on a whole load of potential customers who will never find you. And that means they're going to your competitors.

Why Duplicate Content Doesn't Matter
This has been a hot topic of debate for some time now, but it became more widely discussed last year when Google did their 'Panda' update. You'll never get 5 SEO people in the same room to agree on this topic, but I'm of the view that it's not as important as some people are making it, and this blog post explains why.

The one single way your content management system could be ruining your chances in Google
Content Management Systems are great and allow you a massive degree of control over your website. But if your system isn't set up properly, it could be ruining your chances of Google positions - read this to find out why and how.
Enjoy reading, and feel free to update me on how you're doing with SEO (especially if you're doing my 30 Day SEO Challenge) and of course, do have a look at our Super Silly Spring SEO Offer if you need any help.

Happy SEOing!

PS See you Monday with a whole host of new blogging tips!

Are you ready for the new Facebook Timeline for Business Pages ?

If there's one thing we can rely on, it's that Facebook will change things regularly whether we like it or not.

And let's be fair, , that's their prerogative - they give us a platform we can use for nothing to promote our businesses - it amazes me how many people forget that!

So, new timeline is coming for Facebook pages, in one fell swoop wiping out the good work that's been done with landing pages, changing the game yet again - are you ready for it?

In good news you can use that fab cover photo to promote more of your services; that can't be bad, right?

In other not so good news now there's no real incentive for people to 'Like' your page as you can't encourage them as easily as you could with landing tabs.

I'll be interested to see how this one plays out if I'm honest.

If you want to make the most of your Facebook Business Page, then the following blog posts are worth a read:

The death of the default landing tab
As I've said, default landing pages will be of no use anymore, but this blog post has some good points about why you shouldn't really worry about that. The upshot is that most of your traffic comes from your items in people's news streams, so concentrate on great content and you should be fine.

27 Ways to Attract Fans to Your Facebook Business Page
An oldie written way back when Business Pages were called Fan Pages and had fans not likes, but the basic premise still stands. Start attracting more people to your Business Page today.

One good reason NOT to feed your Tweets into your Facebook page
It's tempting to automate everythingas much as possible, but it's not always a good thing and here's why.

Let me update your Facebook Business page for 5 days for Nothing
I'm not in my cupboard any more, but this offer was susch a great success last time I ran it that I'm running it again. First come first served :)

Facebook EdgeRank - what is it?
Have you ever wondered what makes your Facebook posts show up where they do? Or how you compare to your competitors on Facebook? This article will shed some light and give you something to play with.
Facebook can be great for business, and it's well worth giving it a go if you've poo-pooed it before now - check out our 30 Day Facebook Challenge if you need a bit of help!

PS See you Friday when I'll be talking about SEO

Why you should sart taking blogging more seriously

Hi

Do you blog?

Back in 2010, I talked about why small businesses should blog more, and since then I believe it's become even more important.

If you started blogging in 2010, the chances are that you were pretty early on in your industry (unless you're in SEO or Social Media) and so you should be reaping the rewards right now, getting more visitors, more comments and more sales than your competitors who came to blogging later (or maybe still don't blog!)

If you've still not got around to starting a blog hough, all is not lost. Make 2012 the year that you really start to explore how blogging can work for you and your business.

Why?

Businesses that blog get:

More pages in search engines = more chances for potential customers to find you
More traffic = more chances for you to prove to your potential customers that you are credible and here to stay
More comments = more chances for you to interact with your potential customers
More credibility = more of a chance that potential customers will come to you rather than your competitorsWhat's not to like?

Setting up and customising a blog isn't difficult, and you could be up and running within a couple of days.

Writing isn't as hard as it sounds, there are plenty of articles out there to help, and of course you could ask me about my Blog Mentoring Package.

So here are 5 blog posts you should read if you're looking to kick start your blogging in 2012:

30 Day Challenges

Hi, and thanks for being a subscriber (we only send this newsletter to people who have double opted in to one of our lists) - this newsletter is now moving to weekly, with a different theme each week. This week we're focusing on blogging, and I've rounded up a few of the best blogs I've read recently to help you with your blogging, along with a few of my own, and a great blogging special offer at the end!
Happy Blogging!
Nikki

Are you getting business from your business blog, ?

Because if you're not, then you should be!
I'm a great believer that there's no point in wasting time on things that aren't working, but I also believe that if *I* can't make something work then I'll a) try to learn from those who can and b) if I still can't make it work then I'll hire someone who can do it for me. Only if that fails will I give up.
I'm amazed by the amount of people on Twitter and Facebook saying that they don't get business from their blogs - are you one of them? You have a lovely looking blog, you write religiously, but you can't actually track any recent client back to a blog you wrote?
If so, maybe the blogs I've rounded up here for you will help you out, and if you're about ready to throw the towel in and need a little more inspiration, then take a look at the offer at the end of this newsletter - it might just be what you need :)

So you want to make the most of your buseinss blog?

21 Things You Could Blog About Right Now

When I asked on Twitter what was the number one problem people had with blogging, the majority of people said 'thinking of things to write about' - well this post gives you 21 things straight off the bat - if you write 3 times a week that's 7 weeks worth of blogs I've just given you!

Word Count, Schmerd Count

Too often people get hung up on how many words they should write. Should a blog be short and sweet or can it be a 1000 word epic? This article tells you to sstop worrying and just write - a practice I wholeheartedly agree with!

How to Get More Eyeballs on your Blog Post

A great article from Blogging Queen Sarah Arrow, showing how she promotes blog posts in order to get the maximum amount of readers possible. Great tips you'd do well to follow.

How to Promote a Blog Post - Your Route to Fame

A similar post to Sarah's from me, showing my start to finish route to promoting a blog post, along with a handy downloadable diagram to pin on your wall to remind you. This route works - let me know if you try it and how it works for you :)

Make your Blog Shareworthy Every Time

Another fab blog post from Problogger, showing the 7 Cs needed to make people want to share your blog. After all, it's fine that you share your blog with YOUR contacts, but when they share it with their contacts, and they with theirs, that's when the magic starts.

Blogging Tip - Self hosted Wordpress !

If you're serious about gaining business from your business blog, then in my opinion, self hosted Wordpress is the way to go. Usually easy to install, it's more adaptable than Wordpress.com and allows you to do so much more SEO wise.
If you're not self hosting your blog, you're missing out on some great benefits.

Not sure whether you're self hosting or not? Ask me!

OFFER OF THE WEEK!

When a small business blogs, it gets impressive results. It gets more traffic, and this means more potential customers. It gets more links from other websites, which meansSEO points all round. It gets its blog pages indexed, which means that there's even more chance of getting found through a Search Engine.
But what if you're not a 'natural' blogger? What if you struggle to find things to write about? Or what if you're writing, writing, writing, but not seeing any results?
That's where I come in.
With my Blog Mentoring service, you get the experience of someone who actually does business through and because of blogs, a holding hand to help guide you through the blogging maze, and blogging help on tap each and every day.
There's no point to blogging if it's not bringing you business.
I'm a big believer that all of your marketing should be bringing in business, whether blogging, Facebook, SEO, Twitter, Article Marketing, Adwords, whatever. If it's not, then it's wasted time and money.
So I'm taking on just SIX people; I can't realistically give my time to any more.
What does a blog mentor do?
I'll:

Critique your blog from the inside out and suggest changes
Send you emails every day with ideas of things to blog about
Critique your blog posts before you publish them
Make sure they're SEOed to the max!
Help you to promote them via my own Social Media channels
Find you places to guest blog
and more!
In fact I'll do pretty much everything except write the blogs for you
I want you to be successful, to bring in potential clients, and essentially make money from your blogs. I'll be available on email or Skype chat during working hours, and once a week we'll have a catch up chat on the phone to talk things through.

When I saw that Nikki Pilkington was offering telephone mentoring sessions, I booked one immediately.
I read Nikki's articles on a regular basis. She is an internet marketing

Before the call, Nikki had a look at my blogs and social media profiles. I felt she understood completely my challenges.

I don't usually send out emails like this so I hope you'll forgive me for being a bit self promotional - I promise that the hints and tips you've been used to will be on the agenda again very soon!

Sometimes you need more than an ebook, more than a blog post and more than a quick exchange on Twitter;
when it comes to organising and understanding your online marketing,
there are times when only a proper chat over the telephone will help.
With this in mind, I've decided to bring the launch of my telephone
mentoring service forward - it was due to launch in 2011, but so many of
you have asked that I'm starting this week with a very special offer.
I'll be offering 1 hour coaching sessions by telephone, to talk about and advise you on:

SEO and Google
Adwords and Pay Per Click
Facebook
Twitter
Blogging
Social Media Marketing
and more!
I'll answer any questions you have help you to sort out any niggles,
give you advice on the way forward and become your guiding hand through
the maze of online marketing.
Rather than having to commit to any sort of contract, you can decide
to take just one session and then go it alone, or you can buy further
sessions for future use.
Any questions you have will be answered, and I'll follow up with an
email confirming the steps forward we've spoken about - I'll even chase
you up afterwards to see how you're getting on!
The cost? Well, here's where my 'zany marketing approach' comes into its own YOU decide the price. An hour of my time would usually cost a minimum
of £50, but I'm giving you the chance to get it at a price of your
choosing - all I ask is that you think seriously about the benefits to
your business of spending an hour talking about YOUR marketing (not some
generic idea, advice will be tailored specifically for YOU). No-one
will know what you've paid, except me, and every client will be treated
the same, no matter how much they've paid.
Why am I doing this? Well, I'll be honest - most people I've spoken
to have said it's a bad idea; it makes me look desperate; it cheapens my
offering.
I disagree.
The people taking this offer will hopefully give me great
testimonials for the mentoring service, which means I can hit the ground
running in 2011, and I get to chat to a lot of interesting people, and
develop new ideas. You get expert advice, a helping hand and some great
ideas for your business. Win-win all round, I say
Be warned that I'm only taking 5 people per week for this offer, and
it's first come first served, so if you're interested, stake your claim
now by using the 'Donate' button on this page. By return you'll get a list of
questions and some suggested dates for our call. Once you're booked in
I'll start looking at your site and marketing and be ready for our call
with a whole host of ideas!

A quick request for some help, and a few blog posts you may be interested in - do YOU know how much time you spend on Social Media? I'd love it if you could help me out here :)

It's easy to spend a lot of time on blogging, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube et al, but are you aware of just HOW long you sepdn on Social Media for your business or businesses?
A blog post I read a few weeks ago from someone saying how they spent ALL of their day on these things, yet had generated no business got me to thinking - were they spending their time wisely? Or were they just 'hitting and hoping' without thinking about the return they would get.

I know it's easy to start tweeting with the intent of only spending 5 minutes at it, then finding yourself two hours later still there chatting to people, which is fine if it helps your business, but not so great if you get nothing from it.

So I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out with this quick 2 question survey on how much time you spend per week on Social Media - it's anonymous and I'll be using the results to write a report once we get a decent amount.

The survey is here - http://www.nikkipilkington.com/blog/2010/08/25/how-much-time-do-you-spend-on-social-media-per-week/ - many thanks!

Nikki
