BEA 2011 Newsletter
Dear Friends:

BookExpo is upon us! We're looking forward to seeing many of you in New York next week, and we've got a full lineup of exciting events to tell you about.

For our independent bookseller friends, we're cohosting a party on Monday night with some of our indie publishing colleagues on the rooftop pool deck of the Midtown Holiday Inn (the official ABA hotel). During the conference, we'll have signings by Bonnie Nadzam, John Milliken Thompson, Ronald De Feo, and Christie Watson--read on for details!

Just for BEA, we're giving away limited-edition totebags featuring Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away during Christie Watson's signing on Wednesday. But as a thank-you to our subscribers, we'll let you skip the line: the first twenty people to stop by our booth (#4421) on Tuesday and mention this newsletter will receive a totebag a day early.

For those who won't be attending BEA, never fear: you can still get to know our authors, download the guide to "A Vacationing Killer's Favorite New York Places," and request many of our books via Netgalley.

Until next week!

A conversation with Bonnie Nadzam...

Lamb deals with a complicated relationship between a child and an adult that blurs the lines between friendship and intimacy. How did you approach such a difficult subject?

The age difference between them is not that essential to me; what is essential to me is the way they communicate, the way Tommie is seduced by the same narratives and lies with which Lamb seems to seduce even himself. In this final draft, some of the more interesting work I think the age difference accomplishes involves the way it points to different kinds of human vulnerability on one hand, and on the other hand, a very common adolescent human desire--regardless of age--to experience at any cost something like beauty, something like love, something bigger than ordinary daily life seems to offer. That's a powerfully seductive desire, and so ubiquitous it's easy to miss its influence in our lives. [Read more

A conversation with John Milliken Thompson...

How did you come across Commonwealth v. Cluverius, the case that would form the basis for The Reservoir? When did you decide that it would be a great subject for a novel?

I'd been intrigued with Richmond for some time, so I went there looking for a story from its rich past, imagining that the Civil War and earlier periods would be the most fruitful. Looking in Virginius Dabney's history of the city, I read a paragraph on the case that caught my interest. The more I dug into the case and the period, the more fascinated I became. Transported back in time, I wanted to bring readers along for the ride. My original idea was to write a nonfiction book that would present the courtroom drama and the psychologies of the main characters. After a few months, however, I decided that fiction was the only way I could really understand the characters and their motivations. [Read more]

While you're in town for BEA, you'll want to take time away from the Javits Center and see the sights. Let "Mr. King"--the art-loving, easily-distracted assassin in Ronald De Feo's novel--be your guide. Don't miss the Hilton Hotel: "Notable for its ugly gray multi-windowed exterior, a deadly Sixth Avenue monstrosity. The perfect place to knock someone off since the security is so lax," and the Viand Coffee Shop: "A fine place to eat, relax, and perhaps read a book on Georgian houses....But beware of any man wearing sunglasses for no good reason."

Come by our booth to pick up a copy of the guide. Or, if you want to get a head start, you can download it here.

Just published last week, Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away has garned praise from readers, reviewers, and booksellers. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "[An] impressive debut...Watson's nuanced portrayal of daily life in Nigeria is peopled with flawed but tenacious characters who fight not only for survival but for dignity." It's also an IndieNext pick for June. To celebrate, we're giving away limited-edition Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away totebags during Christie Watson's BEA signing--be sure to mark your calendar for 11:00 Wednesday morning!
