Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
**Are You Optimistic About the Future?**
A recent USA TODAY/Gallup Poll reflects Americans' relentless
optimism. In spite of feeling beleaguered by economic challenges,
optimism is on the horizon.
The pollsters asked participants (in an open-ended question format)
which one or two strengths of the United States make them most
optimistic about the next 20 years. The top answer, representing
35% of the responses, was the strength/will of the American people.
This article made me think about what it means to be optimistic. It
reminded me of research by Martin Seligman, PhD that indicates that
"learned optimism" may not just prevent depression, but may result
in improved health.
Are you feeling optimistic about the future? How does that optimism
reflect in your work, your interactions with others, and your
overall day-to-day conversations?
Even if you aren't feeling particularly optimistic at the moment,
if you focus on the associated health benefits, it may help to pull
you away from a negative funk.
The other day I had a conversation with a client who is overwrought
by stress, to the point where it is affecting his health. We
focused what's working in his life to diffuse the negativity, and
our conversation ended with him having a glimmer of optimism about
his future.
I'm not suggesting that you walk around with rose-colored glasses
and ignore the challenges that we face. Instead, think of optimism
as a tool that can help us navigate through the tougher times.
Have a great week!
